Platelet monoamine oxidase in affective disorders.

Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was determined with tryptamine as substrate for 61 drug-free patients who had a primary major depressive disorder and for 32 normal controls. Although there were no significant differences between the mean platelet MAO activity of 19 bipolar patients (4.94 nmoles/hr/mg of protein), 42 unipolar patients (4.97 nmoles), and the controls (4.78 nmoles), an analysis of variance indicated that the variance of the bipolar group was significantly greater than that of the other groups. This suggests that there may be subgroups of bipolar patients that differ in their platelet MAO activity but that appear to be distinct from the bipolar I vs bipolar II classification.

Coarctation of aorta with special reference to infants. Long-term results of operation in 126 cases.

A review of 126 cases of coarctation of the aorta confirms the need for surgical resection in infants with intractable congestive cardiac failure. The high association with additional cardiovascular abnormalities in patients presenting in early infancy contributes significantly to the mortality. Patients with large ventricular septal defects and coarctation of the aorta are at risk and may require pulmonary artery banding at the time of resection of the aortic coarctation. Long-term complications included restenosis (18 cases) and persistent hypertension (10 cases). In order to prevent persistent hypertension, it is suggested that elective resection of the coarctation be done at 1 year of age.

Cestodosis in battery-housed laying hens.

Cestodosis in battery-housed laying hens severely reduced egg production particularly at the time of peak production. Hens were able to consume large numbers of Musca domestica, the intermediate host of Choanotaenia infundibulum following the use of an aerosol insecticide to control flies. A considerable discharge of cestodes followed the use of "Lintex" in the feed resulting in a marked improvement in egg production. The use of an insect growth regulator in the feed showed promise in controlling the breeding of flies.

Effect of peripheral i.v. infusion on neonatal axillary temperature measurement.

UNLABELLED: To determine whether axillary temperature in an arm with a peripheral IV infusion (PIVI) is significantly different than in the arm without a PIVI in neonates. METHOD: Twenty-nine neonates ranging in Dubowitz gestational age from 27-42 weeks were selected from Level II and III nurseries. Each had a PIVI in place in an upper extremity. Right axillary, left axillary, and rectal temperatures were taken simultaneously. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between left and right axillary temperatures using a t-test. CONCLUSION: Either axilla may be used for temperature measurement regardless of PIVI placement.
