Wholism for aging families: meeting needs of caregivers.

Family caregiving of a frail older person is an increasingly common phenomenon. Caregivers are confronted with new roles and responsibilities that provide both challenges and opportunities. Family issues that require expert nursing attention include role reversal, unresolved conflicts, caregiver immersion, elder mistreatment, and caregiving from a distance. Comprehensive geriatric assessment provides a foundation for intervening with families. Nurses are instrumental in providing a family perspective that meets the needs of frail older persons and their caregivers thus providing wholistic care.

Living a nightmare: family experiences of waiting following neurological crisis.

This study examined the waiting experiences of 12 families following a sudden unexpected neurological intensive care unit (ICU) hospitalization. Using a phenomenological approach, family experiences were collected and analyzed. The major themes of uncertainty and searching for meaning depict the lifeworld of family waiting during critical illness. By understanding and entering a family's experience of waiting, ICU nurses can have a pivotal role in empowering families.

Developmental care: the key to the emergence of the vital older woman.

Concern for the quality of life and health care of older women is growing, even though old age is viewed as a time of decline in physical, mental, and social health. Using a developmental perspective is essential to providing holistic nursing care. Older women have unique needs that do not diminish with aging. Some of the greatest challenges for nurses who care for older women occur in relation to gynecologic care. Strategies that promote the health and vitality of older women need to be directed toward increasing access to care, comprehensive assessment, preventive health services, and coordination of care.
