Optometry in Israel--a clinical externship.

In recent years, it has become the policy of optometric institutions to expand the scope of the clinical education experience beyond the geographical locale of the parent facility. This article is a presentation of the background and description of one such clinical program organized by the New England College of Optometry with the cooperation of the Department of Ophthalmology Hadassah Hebrew Medical Center, Jerusalem, Israel.

[Conjugates of the Ca2+ -regulated photoprotein obelin with immunoglobulins: synthesis and use as labels in bioluminescent immunoassay].

An efficient procedure for obelin conjugation with immunoglobulins was developed. The possibility was shown of using the resulting conjugates instead of a radioisotope label for the immunoassay of thyroid stimulating hormone in sera; the conjugates provide a sensitivity of 0.01 microIU/ml. The results of bioluminescent immunoassay (sera of 34 patients) satisfactorily correlate with the results of radioisotope assay (R 0.99).

Comparison of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) to thyrotropin (TSH) stimulation for evaluating thyroid function in dogs.

Five normal dogs and 22 dogs with dermatological signs suggestive of hypothyroidism were evaluated using thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and thyrotropin (TSH) stimulation. Thyroxine (T4) concentration after TRH stimulation was significantly lower than that obtained by TSH stimulation. It was not possible to identify hypothyroid dogs with the TRH-stimulation test, because some euthyroid dogs had either decreases in T4 or only slight increases in T4 concentrations after TRH stimulation. In addition, dogs with pyoderma had decreased responses in serum T4 after TRH stimulation, which became normal following treatment with antibiotics. Six of the 22 dogs were diagnosed as hypothyroid based on TSH results and responses to thyroid hormone replacement. It was concluded that TRH stimulation is not a useful means of diagnosing hypothyroidism in dogs.

[Calcium-regulated photoproteins of marine coelenterates].

Ca(2+)-regulated photoproteins are bioluminescent proteins responsible for bioluminescence of marine coelenterates. The photoprotein molecule is a stable enzyme-substrate complex consisting of a single polypeptide chain and an oxygen "pre-activated" substrate, 2-hydroperoxycoelenterazine, which is tightly but non-covalently bound with a protein. The bioluminescence is triggered by calcium ions and originates from an oxidative decarboxylation of a protein bound substrate. The review provides current data on the photoproteins structure, the mechanism of bioluminescent reaction, the function of some amino acid residues of an active site in the catalysis and the formation of the emitter, as well as on applications of these proteins in a bioluminescent analysis.

[Synthesis of leucine codons and their use in the study of tRNALeu codon correspondence].

The leucine codon--UUA, UUG, CUU, CUC, CUA, CUG--was prepared via the phosphotriester approach. The purity of codon was confirmed by reverse phase chromatography in micro scale. The absence of migration of internucleotidic linkages was confirmed by hydrolysis with pancreatic RNase. Synthetic codon were used to study the codon response of six isoacceptor tRNALeu from the cow mammary gland.
