[Cerebrolysin in the treatment of partial optic atrophy in children].

The purpose of the trial was to investigate efficacy of cerebrolysin in children with partial optic atrophy and to compare different ways of injections of the drug. Cerebrolysin was injected in retrobulbar space and in Tenon's space. The drug was given separately and in combination with trental. Favorable effect has been achieved in all the patients treated with cerebrolysin injections in Tenon's space. In patients treated with retrobulbar injections of cerebrolysin and with injections of cerebrolysin and trental improvement occurred in 50% of cases. In control group, who did not receive cerebrolysin favorable results were achieved in 25% of patients. A 12-month follow-up study stated stability of the effect of cerebrolysin.

[The surgical prophylaxis stage in the progression of myopia in children].

The effect of common "simplified" methods of sclera-enhancing operations using various plastic materials on stabilization of the process has been studied in 211 children (410 eyes), aged from 7 to 15 years, with axial progressive myopia from 2.5 to 20 D of initial, advanced, far-advanced stages of the disease. The follow-up period ranged from 6 months to 3 years. A positive effect of scleroplasty after Pristavko-Pivovarov is observed more frequently in cases of initial myopia, after Malysheva--of advanced, after Remizov-Griaznov--of far-advanced stages of the disease. In operations after Pristavko-Pivovarov, allosclera in newborns is more effective, than dura mater or a collagenous sponge.

[Changes in blood serotonin levels in patients with migraine headaches before and after a course of reflexotherapy].

The study of serotonin levels in the blood of 49 patients with migraine and and migrainous headaches revealed both elevations and decreases in its concentrations as compared to the average physiological norm, which seems to be occasioned by various severity of the disease course. In the majority of patients in the period of disease exacerbation prior to the treatment, the initial concentrations of blood serotonin were lowered. Acupuncture normalizes increased and slightly decreased levels of serotonin which is in agreement with a good and stable clinical response. At the same time acupuncture fails to affect considerably reduced levels of serotonin and only transient clinical improvement occurs in such cases. Thus, the determination of serotonin blood levels in patients with migrainous cephalgias may be employed in the assessment of the severity of the disease course and the prognosis of acupuncture effectiveness.

[Treatment of migraine with electropuncture].

Clinical and electrophysiological examinations of 255 children and adolescents with migraine were carried out. Some age peculiarities of the clinical picture and course of the disease were noted. As the treatment method electropuncture with the use of Soviet-made apparatus pep-1 was given to 80 patients. A favourable clinical effect was registered that correlated with the electrophysiological findings. Indications for, and contraindications to the use of electropuncture for treating migraine in children and adolescents are determined.

[Clinical course of isolated larval infestation of orbit in children].

Clinical course of an isolated infestation of orbital tissues by larvae of helminths parasitizing in dogs (Toxocara canis) has been followed up in 5 patients aged 6-13 years. The process ran a wave-like course for 3-8 months and was characterized by cyclic inflammatory changes in the orbit, presenting by toxic allergic tenonitis, regional lymphadenitis, optic nerve perineuritis with formation of parasitic granuloma detected by computer-aided rhoentgenotomography of the orbit. No clinical or laboratory signs of common inflammatory and allergic reaction in the presence of Toxocara antigen sensitization were observed in any case, which was confirmed by detection of specific antibodies (IgG and IgE). Specific therapy with anti-nematode drug albendazol was effective.

[Pulse therapy in the treatment of optic neuritis in multiple sclerosis].

Corticosteroids are the preparations in the treatment of optic neuritis at multiple sclerosis. The doses and methods of introduction of corticosteroids are chosen individually for the adults and children. A maximum effect is registered in a majority of cases of optic neuritis, when methylprednisolone is prescribed with the pulse-dose introduction, as compared to parabulbar injections or administration of corticosteroids per os. The recovery of vision at relapsing optic neuritis sets on faster and is of a more prolonged nature as compared to other variants of the introduction of corticosteroids. Therefore, the prescription of methylprednisolone as pulse-doses is more effective in both adults and children.

[Visual evoked potentials in children with congenital glaucoma].

Phasic and established visual evoked potentials (VEP) to homogeneous light field and chess patterns were studied in 25 patients (48 eyes) aged 1.5 months to 9 years with different stages of congenital glaucoma and in 114 age-matched healthy children. Patients with almost absolute and far progressed stages of the disease presented with gross changes of VEP to both large- and small-cell chess patterns. In patients with the initial stages of decompensated congenital glaucoma VEP to mostly large-cell chess patterns were altered. These data evidence the usefulness of examining the VEP to stimuli with low spatial frequency for the early detection of congenital glaucoma.

[Irrigation therapy as a method of intensive care of ophthalmopathology in the posterior eye segment in children].

Presented in the paper are data of a comparative analysis of efficiency of different methods of administration of drugs in neuritis and partial atrophy of the optic nerve. New techniques of application and fixation of irrigation systems in the retrobulbar and Tenon's space are described. Experimental and clinical data proving advantages of the new method of administration of drugs by an automatic pulse doser in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the optic nerve are represented. The use of such intensive intermittent technique of administration of drugs in Tenon's space performed at the preliminary stage before electrostimulation of the optic nerve made the procedure by far more effective and ensured better treatment results.

[Systemic enzyme therapy in the treatment of children with lower orbital wall fractures].

Wobenzim, a drug for systemic enzyme therapy, was used in 26 children with lower orbital wall fractures as monotherapy in early periods (on days 1 to 7) after brain injury to improve healing conditions and to minimize the formation of scar tissues in the fractural area. A control group comprised 24 patients who received systemic dehydration and vessel-strengthening therapy. Systemic enzyme therapy with Wobenzim could reduce the attenuation time of inflammatory manifestations of injury, prevent complications, such as strangulation of the musculus rectus inferior in the fractural area and development of strangulated orbital soft tissue hernia, and substantially decrease the number of patients having indications for surgical plastic repair of the orbital wall, as compared with the control group.

[An objective method of examining visual acuity in children with amblyopia].

The authors analyze the results of vision acuity estimation with the use of visual evoked potentials (VEP) and Ye. M. Orlova's table in infants with amblyopia due to strabismus or impaired refraction. The results of electrophysiologic and clinical examinations correlated in 80 percent of cases, this proving the desirability of the VEP method for assessment of the vision acuity in infants.

[Visual evoked potentials to the sinusoidal grid in studying amblyopia in children].

Changes in the amplitude and time parameters of the visual evoked potentials (VEP) of the cortical visual projection area to sinusoidal reticula have been detected in 5-7-year-old children with amblyopia of varying severity; these changes have been particularly manifest in the high-frequency range. A relationship between the group VEP parameters and the vision status indicates the informative value of VEP as an indicator of visual cortex function.
