Taxon 20 (Fam. Pasteurellaceae) infections in European brown hares (Lepus europaeus).

Hemolytic bacteria, phenotypically related to organisms previously identified as Pasteurella haemolytica and tentatively named Taxon 20, were isolated from cases of purulent bronchopneumonia and from conjunctivitis in European brown hares (Lepus europaeus). The bronchopneumonia, sometimes accompanied by lesions in other organs, occurred without other concomitant disease. The conjunctivitis was found mainly in animals suffering from the European brown hare syndrome.

Composition of the enterococcal and streptococcal intestinal flora of poultry.

Identification to species level showed that Enterococcus faecalis and Ent. faecium largely dominated the enterococcal and streptococcal gut flora of 1-d-old chicks. Enterococcus faecalis was rare in 3- to 5-week-old broilers. Two species, Ent. faecium and Streptococcus alactolyticus, were isolated from nearly all broilers examined. Enterococcus hirae and Ent. durans were found in the small intestines of this category of poultry. In layers and parent stock of over 12 weeks of age, Ent. cecorum dominated with Strep. alactolyticus ranking next. Other species were isolated irregularly. Enterococcus avium and Ent. gallinarum, originally described from chickens, were rarely found. These species did not appear to belong to the normal intestinal flora of poultry.

Enterococcus columbae, a species from pigeon intestines.

Gram-positive cocci which dominate in the intestinal flora of domestic pigeons were found to constitute a new species of the genus Enterococcus. The strains were most closely related to Enterococcus cecorum, originally described as Streptococcus cecorum, a carboxyphilic species from chicken intestines, and to Enterococcus avium. The pigeon strains resemble E. cecorum and also many E. avium strains in their lack of group D antigen and in being more sensitive to NaCl than other enterococci. The type strain is strain STR 345 (= NCIMB 13013).

Slide precipitation: a simple method to type Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae.

Soluble thermostable antigens prepared from Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, as commonly applied in the ring precipitation test, were used in rapid slide tests. This method was easier to perform than the ring precipitation test and showed the same specificity. This specificity was higher than that obtained in slide agglutination tests using whole bacterial cells.

International collaborative evaluation of the ATB 32 staph gallery for identification of the Staphylococcus species.

This international collaborative study evaluates a new system (ATB 32 Staph) for the identification of staphylococci taking into account the new novobiocin-sensitive and -resistant species reported. This study involved eight laboratories and 792 strains were tested. The reproducibility obtained for the cumulative results of the inter- and intra-laboratory tests was more than 90%. For 713 strains relevant of a species 95.5% were correctly identified by the system. Eight strains (1.2%) were misidentified and 24 strains (3.3%) were not identified. For 79 strains initially considered as not-classified, 62% were identified at the species level by the new system. The newer ATB 32 Staph gallery is a performant and useful method for routine identification of the currently described staphylococci species from clinical and animal origin.

Pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of erythromycin in pigeons (Columba livia).

Tissue and plasma concentrations were determined after intravenous and oral administration of erythromycin to pigeons to establish the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of the drug. A short mean half-life of elimination of 0.9 h was found. The relative bioavailability after direct crop administration of erythromycin thiocyanate or erythromycin ethylsuccinate at a dosage rate of 100 mg/kg was less than 10%. At a drug concentration in drinking water of 1 g/l, erythromycin plasma levels were barely detectable, whilst lung and trachea concentrations reached a maximum of 1.6 micrograms/ml. Even after crop administration of 100-mg/kg erythromycin thiocyanate, low plasma levels were obtained, whilst lung and trachea concentrations were substantially higher. Prescribed drinking-water regimens seemed unable to yield therapeutic tissue concentrations. Only individual crop administration seemed an appropriate medication method. The use of erythromycin ethylsuccinate did not present any advantage in comparison with erythromycin thiocyanate.

In vivo activity of orally administered antibiotics and chemotherapeutics against acute septicaemic pasteurellosis in rabbits.

Different antibiotics and chemotherapeutics were tested for therapeutic efficacy in rabbits, in an experimental model using a Pasteurella multocida strain which causes hyperacute septicaemia in this animal species. Only enrofloxacin, administered in the drinking water at a concentration of 50-100 mg/l cured the rabbits, provided that a daily intake of 5 mg/kg body weight was achieved. The other drugs tested (tetracycline, spiramycin, erythromycin and a combination of sulfamerazine with trimethoprim), at doses recommended for rabbits, showed little or no activity at all, with the exception of chloramphenicol, which was only partially effective.

A highly selective two-stage isolation method for the enumeration of Staphylococcus aureus in foods.

A plate method for enumerating Staphylococcus aureus is described which combines a 1-h recovery period for stressed cells on a relatively non-selective Baird-Parker agar base followed by a 24-h growth phase in a highly selective, supplemented Baird-Parker medium added as an overlay. Tests with pure cultures showed satisfactory recovery of stressed Staph. aureus and other bacteria. Similar results were obtained with the conventional Baird-Parker procedure and with the two-stage isolation method for shrimps and poultry neck skins, but for raw minced meat, recoveries were higher with the combined method than with the conventional medium. All colonies visible after 24 h on the two-stage medium can be counted as Staph. aureus, whereas longer incubation times and confirmatory tests are necessary to differentiate it from other organisms on conventional Baird-Parker medium.

Failure of oil adjuvants to enhance immunity induced in mice by an inactivated rabbit Pasteurella multocida vaccine.

Mice were immunized with different preparations of a killed whole cell Pasteurella multocida vaccine and challenged with successive tenfold dilutions of the homologous strain. Vaccines adjuvanted with mineral oil did not confer better protection against death than non-adjuvanted suspensions, even when the mice were challenged at 3 months after vaccination. Very good protection was obtained when the non-adjuvanted suspension had been administered twice.

Identification and characterization of Streptococcus suis.

A total of 188 Streptococcus suis strains isolated from pigs with various lesions, mainly bronchopneumonia, were identified using classical biochemical methods and using the API 20 STREP system. The serological classification was performed by precipitation reactions after Lancefield extraction, slide-coagglutinations and capsular reaction tests. Fifty-nine strains belonged to Types 1, 1/2 or 2, 78 strains to Types 3-8 and 51 strains were non-typable. The results of the different tests and the biochemical differences between the different serotypes are discussed.
