Damage spreading in two-dimensional trivalent cellular structures with competing Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics.

The damage spreading of the Ising model on several two-dimensional trivalent structures, including soap froth, Voronoi, and hierarchical structures, are studied with competing Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics. The damage spreading transition temperature T(d) and the Curie temperature T(C) of these structures are compared. We find that T(d) of the hierarchical lattices decreases sharply as the probability of occurrence of Kawasaki dynamics increases, whereas for soap froth and Voronoi, T(d) for the Voronoi and soap froth remain nearly unchanged except when the dynamics is dominated by Kawasaki dynamics. T(d) and T(C) in our two-dimensional structures are nearly the same and they behave similarly as we change the relative probability of occurrence of the Glauber and Kawasaki dynamics. A heuristic argument is provided to explain the numerical results.

Phase transition of two-dimensional Ising model on random point patterns.

The phase transition of two-dimensional Ising model on random point patterns is investigated using Monte Carlo simulation and the critical temperature is calculated using the Bethe approximation. We find a linear relation between the critical temperature and the structural characteristics of the random point pattern, as described by Aboav's parameter. Numerical results and analytical calculation both yield this linear relation with a similar slope, though the intercept is different due to the Bethe approximation.

Cluster persistence of two-dimensional soap froth.

We report on the persistence decay of cell clusters in dynamical simulation of two-dimensional soap-froth as a function of the cluster volume fraction. Both slow gas diffusion and fast dynamical topological processes between cells are incorporated in the simulation. While the simulation yields decay rate in good agreement with two-dimensional soap-froth experiment, it shows a faster decay in comparison to measurements and calculations of persistence in other curvature-driven systems. The fraction of individual cells that contain persistent area also decays due to significant cell movements, confirming that the neighbor swapping T1 topological transition is important in froth coarsening.
