Preferential urn model and nongrowing complex networks.

A preferential urn model, which is based on the concept "the rich get richer," is proposed. From a relationship between a nongrowing model for complex networks and the preferential urn model in regard to degree distributions, it is revealed that a fitness parameter in the nongrowing model is interpreted as an inverse local temperature in the preferential urn model. Furthermore, it is clarified that the preferential urn model with randomness generates a fat-tailed occupation distribution; the concept of the local temperature enables us to understand the fat-tailed occupation distribution intuitively. Since the preferential urn model is a simple stochastic model, it can be applied to research on not only the nongrowing complex networks, but also many other fields such as econophysics and social sciences.

Statistical-mechanical iterative algorithms on complex networks.

The Ising models have been applied for various problems on information sciences, social sciences, and so on. In many cases, solving these problems corresponds to minimizing the Bethe free energy. To minimize the Bethe free energy, a statistical-mechanical iterative algorithm is often used. We study the statistical-mechanical iterative algorithm on complex networks. To investigate effects of heterogeneous structures on the iterative algorithm, we introduce an iterative algorithm based on information of heterogeneity of complex networks, in which higher-degree nodes are likely to be updated more frequently than lower-degree ones. Numerical experiments clarified that the usage of the information of heterogeneity affects the algorithm in Barabási and Albert networks, but does not influence that in Erdös and Rényi networks. It is revealed that information of the whole system propagates rapidly through such high-degree nodes in the case of Barabási-Albert's scale-free networks.

Generation of complex bipartite graphs by using a preferential rewiring process.

It is important in computer science, sociology, and so on to investigate complex bipartite graphs from a viewpoint of statistical physics. We propose a model to generate complex bipartite graphs without growing; the bipartite graphs are assumed to have two sets of the fixed numbers of nodes and a fixed number of edges between nodes belonging to different sets of nodes. In this model, essential ingredients are a preferential rewiring process and a fitness distribution function. By using the preferential rewiring process, we confirm that a bipartite graph reaches a stationary state after a sufficiently long time has passed. We find that the obtained bipartite graph has a scale-free-like property when a suitable fitness distribution is used. It turns out that a condensation of edges takes place in the cases of certain fitness distributions.

Effect of structural relaxation on the physical and aerosol properties of amorphous form of FK888 (NK1 antagonist).

FK888 (NK1 antagonist) is a candidate drug for migraine and selected as a model of amorphous drug. FK888 was micronized to develop as dry powder inhalers (DPIs) taking into consideration of its water insoluble property. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and fragility (m) were 90 degrees C and 118, respectively, and it was categorized as a fragile glass based on Angell's concept. FK888 was structurally relaxed by aging below Tg, then the effect of aging on their physical and aerosol properties were investigated. The investigation on the moisture sorption-desorption isotherms of FK888 indicated that aged FK888 adsorbed less amount of water than that of unaged FK888. This unique moisture sorption-desorption behavior of the aged sample is explained by structural relaxation accompanying decrease of free volume and/or increase of density. As for the dissolution rate of unaged and aged FK888, they showed the similar value, suggesting that there would be no difference in bioavailability. In relation to the stability, FK888 DPIs prepared by unaged and aged FK888 were stored at 70 degrees C, and the respirable fraction of FK888 DPIs was evaluated by using multistage cascade impactor (USP apparatus 3). As a result, the respirable fraction of FK888 DPIs prepared by unaged sample was significantly decreased compared to the aged sample, suggesting that agglomeration may occur in the unaged sample during the storage. This phenomenon was supported by that the unaged sample showed a significant decrease in the surface area compared to that of the aged sample when stored at various conditions.

Electroneutrality coupling of electron transfer at an electrode surface and ion transfer across the interface between thin-layer of 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)imide covering the electrode surface and an outer electrolyte solution.

The electrode reaction of decamethylferrocene (DMFc) dissolved in a thin layer of a room-temperature molten salt (RTMS), 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (C8mimC1C1N) or 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(pentafluoroethylsulfonyl)imide (C8mimC2C2N), on a self-assembled monolayer-modified gold electrode is coupled with the ion transfer across the interface between the RTMS and the outer aqueous solution (W) to give a voltammogram whose shape resembles a voltammogram of a simple one-electron transfer process. The electroneutrality of the RTMS layer during the oxidation of DMFc to decamethylferricenium ion is maintained by the concomitant dissolution of C8mim+ ion from the RTMS phase to the W phase, and the reduction of decamethylferricenium ion to DMFc is accompanied by the transfer of either C1C1N- or C2C2N- from RTMS to W. The midpoint potential of the voltammogram varies with the concentration of the salt in the aqueous phase, C8mimCl or LiCnCnN (n = 1 or 2), in a Nernstian manner, showing that the phase-boundary potential between the RTMS and the W is controlled by the partition of these ions. Although the phase-boundary potential across the RTMS / W interface is Nernstian with respect to the ions common to both phases at the equilibrium, the polarization at the RTMS / W interface under current flow distorts the shape of the voltammograms, resulting in a wider peak separation in the voltammogram.

Solvable Markov random field model in color image restoration.

We propose a scheme for image restoration of full color images by means of a solvable probabilistic model in the red-green-blue space. A special case of our solvable probabilistic model is equivalent to a multicomponent Gaussian model in the statistical mechanics. Exact closed expressions of the evidence and the expectation value of intensity at each pixel in our solvable probabilistic model can be obtained by using multidimensional Gaussian integral formulas and a discrete Fourier transform. In the present paper, the degradation process is assumed to be an additive white Gaussian noise. Hyperparameters are determined so as to maximize the evidence that is expressed in terms of the partition function in our solvable probabilistic model. This work is a pioneering work for the Bayesian approach to the color image restoration by means of the statistical-mechanical technique.

Dynamics of the maximum marginal likelihood hyperparameter estimation in image restoration: gradient descent versus expectation and maximization algorithm.

Dynamical properties of image restoration and hyperparameter estimation are investigated by means of statistical mechanics. We introduce an exactly solvable model for image restoration and derive differential equations with respect to macroscopic quantities. From these equations, we evaluate relaxation processes of the system to the equilibrium state. Our statistical mechanical approach also enables us to investigate the hyperparameter estimation by means of maximization of the marginal likelihood by using gradient descent and the expectation and maximization algorithm from the dynamical point of view.
