Spatial patterns induced purely by dichotomous disorder.

We study conditions under which spatially extended systems with coupling in the manner of Swift and Hohenberg exhibit spatial patterns induced purely by the presence of quenched dichotomous disorder. Complementing the theoretical results based on a generalized mean-field approximation, we also present numerical simulations of particular dynamical systems that exhibit the proposed phenomenology.

Noise-driven mechanism for pattern formation.

We extend the mechanism for noise-induced phase transitions proposed by Ibañes et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 020601 (2001)] to pattern formation phenomena. In contrast with known mechanisms for pure noise-induced pattern formation, this mechanism is not driven by a short-time instability amplified by collective effects. The phenomenon is analyzed by means of a modulated mean field approximation and numerical simulations.

Breathers and thermal relaxation in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam arrays.

Breather stability and longevity in thermally relaxing nonlinear arrays depend sensitively on their interactions with other excitations. We review numerical results for the relaxation of breathers in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam arrays, with a specific focus on the different relaxation channels and their dependence on the interparticle interactions, dimensionality, initial condition, and system parameters.

Nonlinear response with dichotomous noise.

Dichotomous noise appears in a wide variety of physical and mathematical models. It has escaped attention that the standard results for the long time properties cannot be applied when unstable fixed points are crossed in the asymptotic regime. We show how calculations have to be modified to deal with these cases and present as a first application full analytic results for hypersensitive transport.

Asymptotic dynamics of breathers in Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains.

We carry out a numerical study of the asymptotic dynamics of breathers in finite Fermi-Pasta-Ulam chains at zero and nonzero temperatures. While at zero temperature such breathers remain essentially stationary and decay extremely slowly over wide parameter ranges, thermal fluctuations tend to lead to breather motion and more rapid decay. In both cases the decay is essentially exponential over long time intervals.

Switching-induced Turing instability.

We propose a mechanism for inducing a Turing instability in systems whose only stable state is pattern-free and homogeneous. Global alternation between two dynamics, each of which has the same homogeneous stable state, may induce a Turing instability that leads to pattern formation. We determine what kind of alternation can drive the system to a Turing instability, and show that the appearance of the induced spatiotemporal structure depends on the ratio of two characteristic times, one determined by the external forcing and the other by the instability that drives the system at short times. The mechanism is illustrated by means of theoretical calculations and numerical simulations on two well-known biological models that are relevant in morphogenesis.

Pattern formation induced by nonequilibrium global alternation of dynamics.

We recently proposed a mechanism for pattern formation based on the alternation of two dynamics, neither of which exhibits patterns. Here we analyze the mechanism in detail, showing by means of numerical simulations and theoretical calculations how the nonequilibrium process of switching between dynamics, either randomly or periodically, may induce both stationary and oscillatory spatial structures. Our theoretical analysis by means of mode amplitude equations shows that all features of the model can be understood in terms of the nonlinear interactions of a small number of Fourier modes.

Collective behavior of parametric oscillators.

We revisit the mean-field model of globally and harmonically coupled parametric oscillators subject to periodic block pulses with initially random phases. The phase diagram of regions of collective parametric instability is presented, as is a detailed characterization of the motions underlying these instabilities. This presentation includes regimes not identified in earlier work [I. Bena and C. Van den Broeck, Europhys. Lett. 48, 498 (1999)]. In addition to the familiar parametric instability of individual oscillators, two kinds of collective instabilities are identified. In one the mean amplitude diverges monotonically while in the other the divergence is oscillatory. The frequencies of collective oscillatory instabilities in general bear no simple relation to the eigenfrequencies of the individual oscillators nor to the frequency of the external modulation. Numerical simulations show that systems with only nearest-neighbor coupling have collective instabilities similar to those of the mean-field model. Many of the mean-field results are already apparent in a simple dimer [M. Copelli and K. Lindenberg, Phys. Rev. E 63, 036605 (2001)].

Stationary and oscillatory spatial patterns induced by global periodic switching.

We propose a new mechanism for pattern formation based on the global alternation of two dynamics, neither of which exhibits patterns. When driven by either one of the separate dynamics, the system goes to a spatially homogeneous state associated with that dynamics. However, when the two dynamics are globally alternated sufficiently rapidly, the system exhibits stationary spatial patterns. Somewhat slower switching leads to oscillatory patterns. We support our findings by numerical simulations and discuss the results in terms of the symmetries of the system and the ratio of two relevant characteristic times, the switching period and the relaxation time to a homogeneous state in each separate dynamics.
