Long-term results of restoration of feline resorptive lesions with micro-glass-composite.

Twenty-five Class I-III resorptive lesions in 19 cats were restored with Charisma, a micro-glass-composite material. Twenty two restorations were examined 6 and 12, and 10 were examined 24 months post-treatment. Excellent results (restoration intact, no additional resorption visible) were seen in 68% of restorations at 6 months, 36% at 12 months, and 10% at 24 months.

The antimicrobial effectiveness of clindamycin in diseases of the oral cavity.

Veterinary dental ultrasonic equipment can cause bacteria to be aerosolized during prophy procedures. Preoperative treatment with clindamycin prior to removal of calculus using an ultrasonic scaler can reduce aerosolized bacteria. Reduction of plaque bacteria was assessed and was statistically significant in those patients receiving clindamycin. This article describes the evaluation and results of clindamycin application when given prior to dental prophy.

The influence of dry food on the development of feline neck lesions.

The pH of the tooth surface was determined in cats with neck lesions. The presumption that commercial dry cat food with an acid coating can lead to neck lesions is investigated. In general cats with neck lesions had lower pH values of the tooth surface (7.93 +/- 0.61) than healthy cats (8.65 +/- 0.58). Feeding dry cat food with an acid surface did not contribute to the pathogenesis of neck lesions.

[The possibilities and limitations of animal dentistry in the small animal practice].

This paper points out, which dental diseases can be treated successfully in the general veterinary practice and which patients should be assigned to a veterinary dental referral practice. Furthermore, the occurrence and shape of defects in the enamel and cementum are discussed, which can be caused by incorrect use of ultrasonic scalers or sharp edges of the instrument tips.

Restorative dentistry.

Various restorative methods like composite crowns, parapulpar pin reconstructions or vast crowns and bridges, are evaluated against each other. Also new methods for repair of jaw-fractures in dogs and cats by means of parapulpar pins and composites are discussed.

Periodontology.

Periodontology, diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis of periodontal diseases are discussed in detail. Periodontal surgery, which can enhance the self-cleaning mechanism of the oral cavity, is explained for the direct use in daily practice.

[The Helium-neon laser effect on skin and oral mucosal tissue].

The biological effects of the helium-neon (He-Ne) laser on skin and oral mucosa were examined for the first time electron microscopically. Canine epidermis, gingiva and sublingual regions were subjected to treatment by the helium-neon laser with varying exposure times. The exposed tissues were excised immediately after radiation and studied with an electron microscope. Depending on the exposure times, ultrastructural alterations were observed such as cytoplasmic vesiculation and vacuolization, mitochondrial changes, dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi cisternae and other endomembranes of the keratinocytes. Furthermore, ultrastructural changes were seen in stromal cells, endothelial cells of the blood and lymphatic vessels, nerves, muscle cells and in the extracellular compartment of the lamina propria. The ultrastructural alterations of different cell and tissue structures following helium-neon laser radiation were compared with the effects induced by other types of lasers. The results are discussed in light of the stimulation of biological cell processes by low-energy lasers.
