[Preliminary evaluation of the usefulness of vascular prostheses Protegraft DV 1900 manufactured by B. Braun Melsungen AG].

The authors carried out preliminary clinical evaluation of usefulness of the knitted vascular prostheses Protegraft DV 1900 of B. Braun Melsungen AG's firm. 10 prostheses of that firm were used for investigation implanting biforked protheses to six patients and single prostheses to four patients. Such qualities were taken into account: their behaviour in the operation field during the operation so blood percolating through the wall, shredding of the edges, passing of the suture through the prostheses as well as wall rigor after blood coagulation. It was observed that the vascular prostheses Protegraft DV 1900 together with the advantages ascribed until now to prostheses from woven materials and, first of all, a very short period of bleeding through the wall after releasing the clip.

[Anticipated results of arterial surgery in chronic atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower limb].

In 1983-1988, the results of conservative and surgical treatment of patients with atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower limbs were assessed with the aid of a questionnaire. A possibility of prognosis was assessed with the use of mathematically processed data obtained with such approach. An effect of clinical symptoms (intermittent claudication distance, resting pain, necrosis) and stage of the disease (duration, K/R index) and risk factors (blood cholesterol, triglycerides, diabetes mellitus, ischemic heart disease, arterial hypertension) on the result of surgical treatment was analysed. The obtained results suggest that clinical symptoms and risk factors may predict the results of surgical treatment in the atherosclerotic ischemia of the lower limbs.

Effect of silicic acid on surface potential of erythrocytes.

A potential-generating effect of ortho-silicic acid on the surface potentials of erythrocyte membranes was demonstrated by a potentiometric method using platinum electrodes. With concentration rising from 10(-7) to 10(-4) the silicic acid reduced potential of washed erythrocytes which reached the final concentration a value about 36 mV. Higher concentrations of acid caused haemolysis.

[Respiratory insufficiency in patients with myasthenia gravis].

We evaluated 20 patients who required prolonged mechanical ventilation for respiratory failure associated with myasthenia gravis. All 20 patients survived and were weaned from the ventilator after 3 to 14 days (mean 6.5 days) of respiratory support. Progressing bulbar symptoms and respiratory infection were the most frequent causes of the myasthenic crisis. During a period of assisted mechanical ventilation, anticholinesterase medication was interrupted and the patients were treated with steroids and antibiotics. Plasmapheresis may be considered in the management of myasthenic crisis.

Studies on the activity of cholinesterase included on silica gel.

Cholinesterase was immobilized in silica gel. The activity of the bound enzyme was determined by comparing the concentrations of hydrogen ions in the solution entering and leaving the reactor, filled with a suspension of the insoluble enzyme in Sephadex.
