Significance of hematuria after trauma.

There were 142 consecutive patients with post-traumatic hematuria evaluated prospectively during a 7-month period. Of these 142 cases 22 involved penetrating injuries and 120 were secondary to blunt trauma. There were 19 patients with 24 demonstrable genitourinary injuries at urologic injury. Only 8 of the 142 patients required an operation for the urologic injuries. The degree of hematuria did not correlate with the severity of injury. Liberal use of arteriography and renal scanning is proposed to delineate precisely the urologic injury.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: report of two pre-school children and review of the literature.

The results of neuropsychological examinations of two patients with agenesis of the corpus callosum showed low intelligence-test performance, impared visuo-motor co-ordination and impaired bimanual co-ordination. The most striking deficits were observed in Case A, particularly in her inability to identify objects verbally when placed in the non-dominant hand, and in her ability to complete a task with the non-dominant hand without vision, when she was unable to complete the same task with vision. This patient is unusual insofar as she manifests deficits noted in acallosal patients, as well as some noted in split-brain patients but not previously ascribed to acallosal patients.

Changes in environmental life events and their relationship to psychiatric hospital admissions.

This study was designed to determine if differences exist in the number of stressful life events experienced by individuals precipitating a first admission vs. readmission to an inpatient psychiatric facility based on diagnostic classification and sex. The subjects consisted of adult patients diagnosed as schizophrenic, depressive neurotic, or chemically addicted, who had not been hospitalized for psychiatric problems for at least 12 months prior to the current hospitalization. The Holmes and Rahe Social Readjustment Rating Scale was used to quantify the life stresses experienced. A 3 X 2 X 2 analysis of variance showed no significant differences between groups.

Tissue distribution of N-14-C-azure C (methylthionine) in the rat.

The distribution of radioactivity as 5-, 10-, and 15-min intervals following the intravenous administration of N-14-C-azure C was determined. The concentrations of radioactivity observed indicated that radioactive derivatives of azure C would not be useful pancreas of parathyroid scanning agents.

Temperature-sensitive DNA synthesis mutants of Bacillus subtilis--appendix: theory of density transfer for symmetric chromosome replication.

A simple method for characterizing temperature-sensitive DNA synthesis mutants is described. The method uses density transfer and transformation techniques and is based on expected theoretical behavior of the chromosome population. A direct proof of inhibition of initiation of DNA replication is provided. The mutant dna-1, showing quick inhibition of initiation, is further characterized and mapped. An independent method for mapping genetic markers close to the origin, based on their transfer behavior after inhibition of initiation, is presented.
