The relative amounts of haemoglobins A and B have been determined in erythrocytes from 106 unselected domestic cats. Animals were assigned to three haemoglobin phenotypes and allele frequencies obtained by counting: these were similar to those obtained in an earlier family study.
Justification and effectiveness of a multimodal approach to treating a preadolescent who accidentally killed his twin is presented and recommended as a model for treatment of similarly disturbed children. The interaction of dynamically oriented therapy, pharmacotherapy, conflict-resolution/problem-solving-skills training, biofeedback/desensitization, and family work is detailed.
CSF samples were obtained from 44 multiple sclerosis patients during exacerbation and from 50 age and sex-matched non-multiple sclerosis controls. In an attempt ot select the most suitable test for diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, each sample was analyzed by three methods: (1) electrophoresis, (2) electroimmunodiffusion, and (3) radial immunodiffusion (RID). Electrophoresis, electroimmunodiffusion, and radial immunodiffusion yielded positive results in 50, 55, and 59 percent of the multiple sclerosis patients respectively. Electrophoresis, electroimmunodiffusion, and radial immunodiffusion yielded 10, 12, and 8 percent false positives (beyond mean +/- 1 S.D.) respectively. Thus the three tests did not differ much with regard to yield of true or false positive results. When factors such as simplicity, time and equipment involved, and the interval between the test and results are taken into account, radial immunodiffusion appears to be most suitable for an avverage CSF diagnostic laboratory. For a laboratory with special interest in multiple sclerosis, agarose gel-electrophoresis of concentrated CSF appears to be the test of choice.

Membrane phospholipids are not only essential membrane constituents but also determine many membrane functions and integrity. Normal receptor function, signal transduction, and transport of essential substrates depend strongly on normal membrane phospholipid metabolism. Studies of plasma membrane phospholipid composition have indicated that ethanolamine glycerophospholipids decrease, whereas serine glycerophospholipids increase significantly, in Alzheimer disease (AD). The release of arachidonate from the sn-2 position of glycerophospholipids is catalyzed by phospholipases and lipases. These enzymes are coupled to EAA receptors. Overstimulation of these receptors may be involved in abnormal calcium homeostasis, degradation of membrane phospholipids, and the accumulation of free fatty acids, prostaglandins, and lipid peroxides. Accumulation of the mentioned metabolites, as well as abnormalities in signal transduction owing to stimulation of lipases and phospholipases, may be involved in the pathogenesis of the neurodegeneration in AD.
This description of an agency-supported independent adoption program may have significance for other adoption programs and policies. Program assumptions and goals, key design features, and problems experienced in implementing the program are described. The program's impact upon an agency's traditional adoption program is discussed, as well as concerns that have long been raised about the ethicality of independent adoption practices.

Lymphoscintigraphy has been shown to be of assistance in predicting lymphatic basins at risk for the development of metastatic disease in patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma. To further establish the efficacy of this method, 212 patients presenting to the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute at the University of South Florida with primary melanoma of the head, neck, and trunk have been studied. All patients had clinical stage 1 or 2 melanoma and were candidates for elective lymph node dissection. Drainage patterns identified by lymphoscintigraphy were compared to those predicted by historical anatomical guidelines and were found to be discordant in 63% of patients with tumors of the head and neck, and in 32% of those with primary lesions located on the trunk. Operative intervention was changed because of these findings in 47% of all patients, with 19% undergoing dissection of nonclassical lymph node basins. An additional 28% did not have a node dissection because of failure of the scintigram to demonstrate a predominant drainage basin or the demonstration of multiple drainage sites. After a mean follow-up of 2.8 years, there have been no recurrences in basins not positive by lymphoscintigraphy. The lymphatic drainage from cutaneous melanoma of the head, neck, and trunk cannot be reliably predicted by clinical judgment or classic anatomic guidelines, and lymphoscintigraphy is indicated in these patients prior to elective lymph node dissection.

Despite broad support for family preservation as a policy, an approach to service delivery, and a program model, sufficient knowledge has accumulated to warrant reconsidering the use of intensive family preservation programs in public child welfare practice. Based on an integrative review of the child maltreatment and family preservation literature, the current rationale for programs-the prevention of placement-should be abandoned, and a new rationale should be developed. One such approach is articulated, including specification of new roles, goals, and target populations for intensive family preservation programs.
There are numerous tools available to modify the genetic makeup of animals. They are being used to good advantage for studying basic biological phenomena. Within the decade, biomedical products derived from transgenic animals will be available, but the use of this technology for enhancing the quality and efficiency of livestock production will await further refinements in the technology.
