The computer synthesis of expressive faces.

This paper presents a methodology for the computer synthesis of realistic faces capable of expressive articulations. A sophisticated three-dimensional model of the human face is developed that incorporates a physical model of facial tissue with an anatomical model of facial muscles. The tissue and muscle models are generic, in that their structures are independent of specific facial geometries. To synthesize specific faces, these models are automatically mapped onto geometrically accurate polygonal facial representations constructed by photogrammetry of stereo facial images or by non-uniform meshing of detailed facial topographies acquired by using range sensors. The methodology offers superior realism by utilizing physical modelling to emulate complex tissue deformations in response to coordinated facial muscle activity. To provide realistic muscle actions to the face model, a performance driven animation technique is developed which estimates the dynamic contractions of a performer's facial muscles from video imagery.

Comparing two sampling techniques for endocervical cell recovery on Papanicolaou smears.

The importance of endocervical cells in a Pap smear is well-recognized. A Pap smear lacking endocervical cells is considered inadequate and necessitates a repeat test. Clinicians continue to search for techniques that will ensure consistently adequate samples. In this study, Pap smears were obtained for 200 subjects, alternating use of a saline-moistened cotton-tipped applicator with the Zelsmyr Cytobrush for endocervical cell collection. Endocervical cells were present in all 100 Cytobrush smears, compared with 91 of the cotton-tipped applicator smears. The difference is significant (p less than 0.005). The nine smears that lacked endocervical cells were repeated, using the Cytobrush; all nine repeat smears contained endocervical cells. Although the sample used in this study was small, results indicate that the Cytobrush is more effective in obtaining endocervical cells than the cotton-tipped applicator. Use of the Cytobrush is recommended in the interest of reducing the number of false negative reports.

Meningitis presenting as hypertension.

A 21 month old girl who presented with what seemed to be hypertensive encephalopathy is described. Although her encephalopathy resolved with antihypertensive treatment, subsequent investigations revealed haemophilus meningitis.

Immune function at diagnosis in relation to responses to therapy in acute lymphocytic leukemia of childhood.

Tests of immune capacity were performed on blood from 49 children with newly diagnosed, untreated acute lymphocytic leukemia, and relation to prognosis was determined. Patients were treated with multiple-drug therapy and prophylactic cranial irradiation. Median follow-up time was 16 mo (range 10--37 mo). Principal unfavorable findings at diagnosis were absolute numbers of T lymphoid cells outside the range 850--2500/mul blood, absence of whole blood responses to phytohemagglutinin in vitro, a low titer of complexed antibody, and the presence in serum of free leukemic blast cell membrane antigen. Fourteen patients showed two or more unfavorable findings at diagnosis. Eleven of these have died. Four of the remaining 35 patients have died. A shorter duration of first remission was found among patients with abnormal numbers of T cells at diagnosis. The findings suggest that the immunologic capacity of the patient at diagnosis is an important determinant in responses to therapy.
