Economic injury levels for western flower thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on greenhouse cucumber.

Low, medium and high densities of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), were established in three greenhouses at the Greenhouse and Processing Crops Research Centre, Ontario, Canada, in 1996 and 1998 to develop economic injury levels for thrips on greenhouse cucumber. Thrips densities were monitored weekly using yellow sticky traps and flower counts. Fruit was harvested twice a week, graded for size, weighed, and rated for thrips damage using three damage categories. Significant yield reduction was detected 4 wk after severe fruit damage was observed in the high and medium thrips density treatments in 1996 and 7 wk in 1998. Percentage of severe damaged fruit (P(F3)) has significant linear relationships with the adult thrips density (x) that was sampled by sticky traps 1 wk before harvest (P(F3) = -0.2533 + 0.0828x) and that was sampled by flower counts 2 wk before harvest (P(F3) = -0.2025 + 0.5490x). Based on the regression equations, economic injury levels, expressed as adult thrips per sticky trap per day or adult thrips per flower, were calculated for various combinations of control costs, yield potential and fruit prices. The economic injury levels for F. occidentalis ranged from 20 to 50 adults per sticky trap per day or 3 to 7.5 per flower as determined under average greenhouse production conditions in Ontario, Canada.

Deletion of Dad1 in mice induces an apoptosis-associated embryonic death.

Dad1 is a putative anti-apoptosis gene identified in several distantly related organisms. Expression of Dad1 in transfected cells inhibits apoptosis in vitro. To determine whether Dad1 has a similar function in vivo, we used gene targeting to delete Dad1. Heterozygous adult mice (+/-) show no obvious phenotype or abnormalities, but genotype analysis of over 100 offspring from heterozygous matings detected no weanling, homozygous Dad1 null (-/-) mice. Subsequent analysis of embryos from heterozygous matings detected Dad1 null (-/-) embryos at E3.5 but no later, suggesting Dad1 is required for development beyond the late blastocyst stage. Increased levels of apoptosis were observed in cultured embryos lacking a functional copy of the gene, consistent with an anti-apoptotic role for Dad1.

Probing wavepacket dynamics with femtosecond energy- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

Several recent studies have demonstrated how well-suited femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectra are for mapping wavepacket dynamics in molecular systems. Theoretical studies of femtosecond photoelectron spectra which incorporate a robust description of the underlying photoionization dynamics should enhance the utility of such spectra as a probe of wavepackets and of the evolution of electronic structure. This should be particularly true in regions of avoided crossings where the photoionization amplitudes and electronic structure may evolve rapidly with geometry. In this paper we present the results of studies of energy- and angle-resolved femtosecond photoelectron spectra for wavepackets in the diatomic systems, Na2 and NaI. Both cases involve motion through regions of avoided crossings. In Na2, however, wavepacket motion occurs on a single adiabatic potential with an inner and outer well and a barrier between them, while in NaI wavepackets move on the nonadiabatically coupled covalent (NaI) and ionic (Na+I-) potentials. Results of these studies will be used to illustrate the insight into wavepacket dynamics that time-resolved photoelectron spectra provide. For example, in the case of NaI these angle-resolved photoelectron spectra seem to offer some promise for probing real-time dynamics of intramolecular electron transfer occurring in the crossing region of the ionic and covalent states.

Flow injection analysis of fluoride: optimization of experimental conditions and non-linear calibration using artificial neural networks.

This paper deals with the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to two common problems in spectroscopy: optimization of experimental conditions and non-linear calibration of the result, with particular reference to the determination of fluoride by flow injection analysis (FIA). The FIA system was based on the formation of a blue ternary complex between zirconium(IV), p-methyldibromoarsenazo and F- with the maximum absorption wavelength at 635 nm. First, optimization in terms of sensitivity and sampling rate was carried out by using jointly a central composite design and ANNs, and a neural network with a 3-7-1 structure was confirmed to be able to provide the maximum performance. Second, the relationship between the concentration of fluoride and its absorbance was modeled by ANNs. In this process, cross-validation and leave-k-out were used. The results showed that good prediction was attained in the 1-4-1 neural net. The trained networks proved to be very powerful in both applications. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of free fluoride in tea and toothpaste with recoveries between 96 and 101%.

[The development and application of a minitype multifunctional bio-impactor].

This study was aimed to develop a device that can be used for gas percussion, rigid impact, cell injury and simple estimation of the condition of injury. The device has been developed with the use of aerodynamical principle, measuring technique for feeble signal, and integration of machine-electricity. The gas percussion, rigid impact, and cell injury can be produced by altering impact tip. It was examined in the experimental researches of eye, brain, lung and cell injury; the parameters of causing injury could be controlled and on-line tested by the computer. The neurological states of pre- and post-injury were evaluated with the device. The results of animal experiments showed that mild, moderate and severe injury models were produced by gas pressure respectively. The pressure was 400, 600, 700 kPa for rats brain gas percussion injury, 600, 800, 1000 kPa for rabbits' retinal contusion, 300, 450, 600 kPa for rats' lung rigid impact injury, and 100, 150, 200 kPa for cultured cells' injury. In conclusion, the device is simple and easy to use for making controllable injury models, in which different parts and levels of injuries on different minitype animals can be reproduced.

[Pharmacokinetics and disposition of beta-elemene in rats].

AIM: To study the pharmacokinetics, absorption, distribution and excretion of beta-elemene obtained from the roots and stems of Curcuma wenynjin Y. H Chen et C. Ling. in rats. METHODS: A GC method for isolation and determination of beta-elemene in biological specimens was used. RESULTS: After a single i.v. dose to rats, the plasma concentration-time course of beta-elemene fitted well to a two-compartment open model. With regard to i.p. administration of a single dose of 100 mg.kg-1 to rats, the absorption of the drug was rapid. Elimination of the drug from plasma was found to be in accord with linear kinetics, whereas the elimination half-lives were longer than that of i.v. administration. Only small amount of unchanged beta-elemene was excreted in urine, feces and bile after i.v. and i.p. administration. Plasma protein binding ratio was obtained from two different levels of beta-elemene, 97.7% from 60 micrograms.mL-1 and 96.5% from 100 micrograms.mL-1. CONCLUSION: beta-elemene was eliminated at a rapid rate and distributed widely in the body. The protein binding was found to be high. Unchanged beta-elemene excreted via urine, feces and bile were very few.

[Phytotoxic effect of soil cadmium pollution on ramie].

A microplot locating experiment was conducted to study the phytotoxic effect of adding Cd in soil on ramie plants. The results showed that the contents of chlorophyll a and b of leaf, and the photosynthesis productivity of ramie plant were significant reduced by the addition of Cd. As the content of soil Cd reached to 14 mg.kg-1, the biomass yield of the above-ground part of ramie plants was 20% lower than the control, and was 50% lower when soil Cd content was at 100 mg.kg-1. The number of effective tillers was a main factor affecting the yield of ramie raw fibers, and Cd addition had a relatively small effect on the quality of raime fibers. It is suggested that a synthetical technology of soil treatment and agronomic measures should be applied to eliminate the toxic effect of soil Cd and to enhance the resistance of plant against soil Cd pollution when employing ramie as the alternative of food and vegetable crops in a Cd-polluted region, which is also important for a higher yield of ramie.

[Cost-effectiveness analysis on two different measles immunization strategies].

OBJECTIVE: To seek the most economic and effective strategy in measles elimination in China, data of cost - effectiveness was analyzed to compare two different strategies of measles immunization (mass campaign and 2 - dose schedule) based on the data of population, economy and epidemiological features of measles in Henan province. METHODS: DALY was used as the measurement of effectiveness. Taking period from 1997 to 2020, the cost - effectiveness ratio (CER) was defined as the cost difference between mass campaign and 2 - dose schedule divided by the decline of DALYs if 2 - dose schedule had been substituted by mass campaign. RESULTS: Along with the increment of time, CER showed a descending trend then the mass campaign will have positive benefits after year 2013. CONCLUSION: Mass campaign is more cost - effective than 2 - dose schedule.

The changes of TGF-alpha, TGF-beta 1 and basic FGF messenger RNA expression in rabbit cornea after photorefractive keratectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To study the mechanism of haze formation and investigate the expression changes of transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha), transforming growth factor-beta 1(TGF-beta 1) and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) mRNA in corneal epithelium and stroma after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS: Sixteen white rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups, and PRK was performed on each eye of 12 rabbits. The haze formation was examined under a slit-lamp microscope at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd month after PRK, and the expressions of TGF-alpha, TGF-beta 1 and bFGF mRNA were detected with in situ hybridization. RESULTS: The corneal haze formed at the 1st month after PRK. The most prominent haze formation was observed at the 2nd month, and declined gradually at the 3rd month after ablation. TGF-alpha mRNA expression was presented on the normal corneal epithelium and not on the corneal stroma. TGF-beta 1 and bGFG mRNA were expressed by both corneal epithelium and stroma. The capacities for cornea tissue expression of three growth factors mRNA increased after PRK, and the peaks appeared on the 1st, 2nd month. The extent for expressions of three growth factors related proportionally to the haze formation. CONCLUSION: Three growth factors took part in promoting corneal wound healing after PRK, and might contribute to corneal haze formation and development.

[Effect of amniotic membrane on expressions of TGF-beta 1, collagens I, III and fibronectin in rabbit corneal healing after photorefractive keratectomy].

OBJECTIVE: To observed the effect of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) on expressions of transforming growth factor-beta 1(TGF-beta 1), collagens I, III and fibronectin (FN) in rabbit corneal healing after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), and investigate the anti-scarring formation mechanism of AMT. METHODS: Ten rabbits underwent bilateral PRK to correct 8 diopters of myopia. One eye was randomly transplanted with preserved human amniotic membrane, and the other eye served as the control. The expressions of TGF-beta 1, collagens I, III and FN were studied by immunohistochemistry at 4 weeks after operation. RESULTS: The expression of TGF-beta 1 in corneal epithelium and keratocytes and collegans in anterior stroma was significantly less in AMT group than in the control group. The expressions of collagens III and FN in anterior stroma of ablation area were also significantly less in AMT group than in the control group. The staining of collagen I had no significant difference between the AMT group and the control group. CONCLUSION: The expressions of TGF-beta 1, collagens III and FN can be suppressed by amniotic membrane after PRK. These data suggest that part of the anti-scarring effect of AMT may be mediated through the suppression of TGF-beta 1, collagens III and FN expression.

[Effect of amniotic membrane on filtering bleb after trabeculectomy in rabbit eyes].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of amniotic membrane on filtering blebs after trabeculectomy. METHODS: Twelve rabbits underwent bilateral trabeculectomies. One eye was randomly sutured preserved human amniotic membrane between the sclera and the scleral flap and the other eye served as the control. The filtering blebs and filtering function were observed at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd week after the operation. The scar development situation between bleb and episclera was observed under the light microscope. RESULTS: The blebs in amniotic membrane group were eminence, effuse and had a good filtering function at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd week after the operation. The blebs in control group were cicatrized and had a bad filtering function. Histological observation showed no scar development, less fibroblast cell and more inflammatory cells infiltration at the site of trabeculectomy in amniotic membrane group. On the contrary, the control group showed more fibroplasia and fibroblast hyperplasia. CONCLUSION: Amniotic membrane can reduce the scar, improve filtering function.
