Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contamination in coastal sediments of the Izmit Bay (Marmara Sea): case studies before and after the Izmit Earthquake.

Izmit Bay and its coastal environment was strongly affected by the August 17th, 1999 Izmit Earthquake. The changes in the Bay ecosystem and its chemical oceanography have been studied in detail previously [Okay, O.S., Tolun, L, Telli-Karakoç, F., Tüfekçi, V., Tüfekçi, H. And Morkoç, E. 2001. Yzmit Bay ecosystem after Marmara earthquake and subsequent fire: The long-term data. Marine Pollution Bulletin 42, 361-369; Balkýs, N. 2003. The effect of Marmara (Izmit ) Earthquake on the chemical oceanography of Izmit Bay, Turkey. Marine Pollution Bulletin 46, 865-878.]. In this study surface sediments collected from the Izmit Bay before and after the earthquake have been analysed for total and individual (14 compounds) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Analyses have been performed by high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC/FD). Before the earthquake, total PAH concentrations in the Bay sediments ranged from 120 to 8900 ng/g while after the earthquake PAH concentrations varied between 240 and 11,400 ng/g. Molecular indices based on isomeric PAH ratios used to differentiate the pollution sources, clearly indicate the differences in molecular distribution of PAHs before and after the earthquake. Sediment data obtained before the earthquake shows that most of the contamination originated from high temperature pyrolytic inputs while after the earthquake it originated from petrogenic sources. This difference emphasises the environmental impact of uncontrolled discharges from petroleum industries after the earthquake. The LMW/HMW ratio (sum of the low molecular weight PAHs / the sum of higher molecular weight PAHs) predominance also changed after the earthquake as a result of the strong water movements. According to the characteristics of aromatic rings distributed in the bay sediments, the soluble parts of the total PAH were probably transferred to the water column after the earthquake as a result of resuspension process. The TEL/PEL (Threshold Effect Level / Probable Effect Level) analysis suggests that the Izmit Bay sediments were likely contaminated by acutely toxic PAH compounds.

Data evaluations and quantitative predictive models for vapor pressures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at different temperatures.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are typical and ubiquitous organic pollutants. Vapor pressures, which can be classified as solid vapor pressure (P(S)) and (subcooled) liquid vapor pressure (P(L)), are key physicochemical properties governing the environmental fate of organic pollutants. It is of great importance to develop predictive models of vapor pressures. In the present study, partial least squares (PLS) regression together with 15 theoretical molecular structural descriptors was used to develop quantitative predictive models for vapor pressures of PAHs at different temperatures. Two procedures were adopted to develop the optimal predictive models by eliminating redundant molecular structural descriptors. The cross-validated Q2(cum) values for the obtained models have been found higher than 0.975, indicating good predictive ability and robustness of the models. It has been shown that the intermolecular dispersive interactions played a leading role in governing the values of log P(L). In addition to dispersive interactions, dipole-dipole interactions also played a secondary role in determining the magnitude of log P(S). In view of the scarceness of chemical standards for some PAHs, the difficulty in experimental determinations, and the high cost involved in experimental determinations, the obtained models should serve as a fast and simple first approximation of the vapor pressure values for PAHs at different environmental temperatures.

Quantitative structure-property relationships for vapor pressures of polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

Based on quantum chemical descriptors, by the use of partial least squares regression, quantitative structure-property relationship models for subcooled liquid vapor pressures (PL) of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) congeners were developed. The Q2cum value of the optimal model obtained is as high as 0.993, indicating a good predictive ability and robustness of the model. Although disagreements were observed between the predicted log PL values and log PL values of validation set, the model obtained can still be used for estimating PL of other PBDE congeners, considering the fact that accurate PL values for compounds with low volatility are extremely difficult to determine experimentally. Intermolecular dispersive interactions play a leading role in governing the values of PL, followed by electrostatic, dipole-dipole and dipole-induced dipole interactions. Intermolecular dispersive interactions also govern the values of enthalpies of vaporization.

Quantitative relationships between molecular structures, environmental temperatures and octanol-air partition coefficients of PCDD/Fs.

A concise quantitative model that incorporates information on both environmental temperature (T) and molecular structures, for logarithm of octanol-air partition coefficient (K(OA)) to base 10 (logK(OA)) of PCDDs, was developed. Partial least squares (PLS) analysis together with 14 quantum chemical descriptors were used to develop the quantitative relationships between structures, environmental temperatures and properties (QRSETP) model. It has been validated that the obtained QRSETP model can be used to predict logK(OA) of other PCDDs. Molecular size, environmental temperature (T), q+ (the most positive net atomic charge on hydrogen or chlorine atoms in PCDD molecules) and E(LUMO) (the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) are main factors governing logK(OA) of PCDD/Fs under study. The intermolecular dispersive interactions and thus the size of the molecules play a leading role in governing logK(OA). The more chlorines in PCDD molecules, the greater the logK(OA) values. Increasing E(LUMO) values of the molecules leads to decreasing logK(OA) values, implying possible intermolecular interactions between the molecules under study and octanol molecules. Greater q+ values results in greater intermolecular electrostatic repulsive interactions between PCDD and octanol molecules and smaller logK(OA) values.

Influence of nonylphenol on the microbial community of lake sediments in microcosms.

In this study the impact of nonylphenol, an estrogenic degradation product of alkylphenol polyethoxylates, on the microbial community structure in contaminated sediments of aquatic microcosms using in situ hybridization with fluorescently labeled oligonucleotides probes was investigated. A positive correlation between nonylphenol concentration and cell numbers of bacteria and microfungi as well as an increase in the numbers of active bacteria was found. However, the ratio between total microorganisms and active bacteria remained unchanged. A large fraction of the cells could be identified using group specific oligonucleotide probes. A slight change in the composition of the microbial community structure was observed, with Gram-positive bacteria with high DNA G + C-content becoming more abundant at higher concentrations of nonylphenol.

Iodine species and the endocrine system: thyroid hormone levels in adult Danio rerio and developing Xenopus laevis.

Recently a new approach for the analysis of iodinated organic species in human serum has been developed using liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS). This method enables quantification of iodide, T4 and T3, as well as reverse T3 (rT3) and the synthetic precursors of TH, monoiodotyrosine (MIT), and diiodotyrosine (DIT) in a single injection. In this work, the LC-ICP-MS approach was used to analyze whole-body homogenates of adult male and female zebrafish (Danio rerio) and tadpoles of the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) at two different developmental stages (NF58 and 61) according to Nieuwkoop and Faber. The data demonstrate that the LC-ICP-MS method was successful at measuring I-, MIT, DIT, T4, T3, and rT3 in these two species. Furthermore, the method also detected five additional iodinated compounds which are currently unidentified.

Estrogenic effects from household stoves.

With the application of a genetically modified yeast, estrogen receptor-activating compounds were detected in the soot and emission gas of a wood-burning household stove. The EC50 value of 17beta-estradiol was divided by the EC50 value of soot, and the obtained relative estrogenic value for raw soot was 2.37E-5, indicating that soot was about 100,000 times less estrogenic than 17beta-estradiol. Chemical analysis revealed that alkyl phenol, benzonic acid, and PAHs represented the major constituents in the most potent fractions of the soot. Along with PAHs, other constituents might also contribute to the estrogenicity of soot.

Contamination and distribution of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) in agriculture fields in Ya-Er Lake area, China.

The contamination and distribution of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) from two agricultural fields of a heavily polluted lake area in China (Ya-Er Lake) are presented. The vertical distribution pattern of total PCDD/Fs in soil cores reveals that the maximum concentration was in the layer of 20-30 cm. The concentrations in the top layer of soil at the two sites were similar (17.48 ng/kg at Site 1 and 18.10 ng/kg at Site 2), but the maximum concentration of Site 1 (120.8 ng/kg) was two times higher than that of Site 2 (64.39 ng/kg). The maximum concentration of PCDD/Fs in mud cores in rice fields (0-50 cm) at Sites 1 and 2 was in the layer of 0-10 cm. The maximum PCDD/F concentration in the top layer in mud at Site 1 (203.1 ng/kg) was higher than that at Site 2 (143.3 ng/kg). Significant correlations were found between the mud PCDD/Fs and the organic carbon content (R = 0.9743, P < 0.05 at Site 1; R = 0.9821, P < 0.05 at Site 2), the two variables being highly correlated (R = 0.9049, P < 0.05, at Site 1; R = 0.9916, P < 0.05 at Site 2). All correlation coefficients were significant at the 95% level. Concentrations were highly correlated with organic carbon, indicating that sorption to organic carbon was the dominant mechanism. Using principal component analysis, the homologue profiles of soil, mud, and plants (rice and radish) were compared. The PCDD/F patterns in plants were found not to be correlated to those in soil and mud. This suggests that atmospheric deposition may be the main source of PCDD/Fs in rice grain. However, mixed exposure involving uptake mechanisms and atmospheric deposition is considered main the source of PCDD/F pollution in radishes.

Reproduction disturbances of Brachionus calyciflorus (rotifer) for the screening of environmental endocrine disrupters.

Rotifers and especially the Brachionus calyciflorus species have already shown advantages (e.g. good sensitivity, simplicity, ecological relevance, short generation time) for the chronic toxicity assessment of water pollutants. In this study, the B. calyciflorus three-day test was evaluated on ethinylestradiol, nonylphenol and testosterone for the determination of endocrine disrupting (reproductive) effects. Reproduction (intrinsic rate of population increase) and sex ratio (males/females and mictic females/amictic females) were explored and discussed as suitable endpoints. B. calyciflorus has shown a fair sensitivity to detect reproductive disrupting effects after exposure to ethinylestradiol, nonylphenol and testosterone. Population growth (intrinsic rate of population increase, r) and the ratio ovigerous females/ non-ovigerous females are both suitable endpoints, whereas the occurrence of males was not frequent enough to be used as endpoint.

Endocrine effects of sublethal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix).

Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) samples were collected from five selected sites that represent diverse levels of downgraded persistent organic pollutants (POPs) contamination in Ya-Er Lake in October 1999. Hepatic ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and UDP glucuronosyltransferase (UDPGT) activities, hepatosomatic index (HSI), hepatic retinoids, serum thyroid hormones were measured. It was found that hepatic retinol and serum free 3,5,3'- tetraiodothyronine (FT3) significantly increased (P < 0.01) when both hepatic EROD and UDPGT activities significantly declined (P < 0.01) from pond 1 to 5 with decrease in the degree of pollution. This significant negative correlation (P < 0.01) suggests that the persistent organochlorinated contaminants could induce hepatic EROD and UDPGT activities, alter retinoid and thyroid hormone homeostasis, and finally lead to the reduction of retinol and FT3, the two biologically active forms of retinoids and thyroid hormone in silver carp of Ya-Er Lake.

Linear free energy relationships on rate constants for dechlorination by zero-valent iron.

By correlation analysis, molecular structural factors governing surface area-normalized rate constants (k) for dechlorination by zero-valent iron, were identified. Twenty-nine quantum chemical descriptors computed by MNDO, AM1 and PM3 Hamiltonians for gas-phase and the conductor-like screening model (COSMO) for incorporating solvent (H2O) effects were studied. Besides the energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (E(LUMO)), the character of carbon-chlorine bonds (C-Cl bonds) and especially the strength of C-Cl bonds was found significant in governing the magnitude of log k. By PLS analysis, six two-parameter linear free energy relationships (LFER) were obtained. The best two-parameter LFER model was the one using E(LUMO) and C (the Coulombic interaction energy of the two-center term for the C-Cl bonds) computed by PM3/H2O method as molecular structural descriptors. Chlorinated compounds with high E(LUMO) and C values tend to have low dechlorination rate constants.

Comparison of different extraction techniques for the determination of polychlorinated organic compounds in sediment.

The performance of various enhanced extraction techniques, such as accelerated solvent extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, Soxhlet extraction, ultrasonic extraction and fluidized-bed extraction for the determination of polychlorinated organic compounds in dry sediment was investigated in two laboratories. The results of the two laboratories were in good agreement. The extraction yields from the batch extraction methods were lower than those from the dynamic techniques. Accelerated solvent extraction, especially, exhibited higher extraction efficiency than the standard procedure, Soxhlet extraction, whereas the results of fluidized-bed extraction were comparable.

Regioselective synthesis of a branched isomer of nonylphenol, 4-(3',6'-dimethyl-3'-heptyl)phenol, and determination of its important environmental properties.

A method for the synthesis of a pure nonylphenol isomer, 4-(3',6'-dimethyl-3-heptyl)phenol, by Friedel-Crafts reaction between anisole and 3-bromo-3,6-dimethylheptane that gives a 47.3% overall yield is reported. The reactions were followed by GC-MS, and the chemical structures are in agreement with the NMR and IR spectra. The log K(ow) value for this compound, its water solubility, vapor pressure, and Henry's Law constant were also determined. These physicochemical properties were required for prediction of the compound's behavior in aquatic ecosystems.

Emission of nonchlorinated and chlorinated aromatics in the flue gas of incineration plants during and after transient disturbances of combustion conditions: delayed emission effects.

The profiles of different products of incomplete combustion (PIC) in the flue gas of a 1 MW pilot combustion facility were investigated under normal steady-state and disturbed combustion conditions. The behavior of emission profiles after disturbed combustion conditions was investigated in order to obtain a better understanding of emission memory effects. Highly time-resolved, quantitative on-line measurements of several aromatic species down to low ppbv or higher pptv concentrations were performed by a mobile resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Conventional analytical methods (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography) were also applied for measurement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/F). The sampling point was located in the high-temperature region of the plant at the outlet of the post-combustion chamber at temperatures between 650 and 880 degrees C, prior to any emission reduction devices. The investigation pointed out that after a short phase of disturbed combustion conditions, e.g., due to process changes, transient puffs, or malfunctions, the composition of combustion byproducts in the flue gas can be changed drastically for a very long time ("memory emission" effect). It is suggested that carbonaceous layers, deposited on the inner walls in the high-temperature zone of the plant, might be responsible for the observed memory emission of some PAH species. Drastic changes in the profiles of the PCDD/F homologues were also observed during memory emission conditions. The PAH memory most likely is due to pyrolytic degradation of the carbonaceous layers, while the altered PCDD/F homologue pattern may be mediated by the high catalytic activity of the freshly formed deposit layers. Finally, it should be emphasized that a rich pattern of aromatic species, including PCDD/F, was found in a temperature regime well above the typical temperature window (approximately 300 degrees C) for de novo PCDD/F formation.

Application of coupled liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry in photolysis studies of the herbicide triflusulfuron-methyl.

The photochemical fate of the herbicide triflusulfuron-methyl in aqueous solution under UV light (lambda > 290 nm) was investigated. Nine photoproducts were detected and tentatively identified by LC/MS and LC/MS/MS analysis. The main routes of degradation involve the cleavage and/or contraction of the sulfonylurea bridge with the elimination of sulfur dioxide, which increases the acidity of the reaction medium. On the basis of the results obtained a photodegradation pathway is proposed.
