The abutment seating jig: a prosthodontic implant adjunct.

Rapid, accurate seating of screw-retained implant abutment heads, where timing is controlled by internal or external hex designs, can be readily accomplished with individual, custom-cast abutment head location devices. The devices are especially useful when the abutment head-implant body complex is to be permanently cemented. The use and design of abutment seating jigs for single tooth implants and completely implant or implant and natural tooth-supported prostheses are described.

The abutment transfer driver: a prosthodontic implant adjunct.

Rapid, accurate seating and cementation of permanent implant abutment heads that have been substantially altered for interocclusal clearance or parallelism requirements can be accomplished with individual, custom cast, insertion devices. The evolution and design of these devices (abutment transfer drivers) for fixed and removable prostheses are described.

A consensus conference to develop curriculum guidelines in implant dentistry for dental hygiene programs was held on June 16, 1995 in Monterey, California. The conference was sponsored by the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the American College of Oral Implantology, the American Society of Osseointegration, and the Association of Dental Implant Auxiliaries & Practice Management. Composite bone graft augmentation for maxillary implant reconstruction: clinical report.

A method for antral augmentation with a composite graft of freshly harvested iliac crest bone marrow and porous hydroxyapatite for implant placement is described. The volume, cellular type, particulate composition, and density of the graft permit rapid implant placement and integration when compared with totally synthetic grafting procedures. A clinical report is presented.

Prosthetic rehabilitation with HA-coated root form implants after restoration of mandibular continuity.

Utilization of implants to aid in oral reconstruction after partial mandibular resection entails coordination of multiple health care co-therapists as well as funding sources for the underprivileged. An illustrative case emphasizes these points. Ablation of a squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue resulted in a partial mandibulectomy, as well as multiple sensory, physical and psychosocial deficits. Continuity of the mandible was restored with a vascularized iliac crest bone graft. (Fig. 1) Total functional restoration, however, was only possible with implant supported overdenture prostheses. (Figs. 3-5).

The impact of implants on dental practice. A review of the 1988 NIH Consensus Development Conference.

The Consensus Development Conference process for the second time in ten years has come to grips with the dynamic field of oral implantology and has given it unquestioned scientific legitimacy and clear future clinical and research direction. Hopefully, for the millions of patients who could benefit from implant therapies, practitioners, hospitals, academic institutions, government agencies, health care insurance carriers, etc. will not wait to be forced to confront the reality of the success of implants, but they will begin or continue to restructure their practices, curricula, health care policies and benefits to provide the quality of life reasonably desired by our citizens.
