Persistence and biodegradation of carbaryl in soils.
The persistence of the methylcarbamate pesticide carbaryl was studied in four soils under flooded conditions. A substantial portion of the pesticide was recovered from all soils even after 15 days of its application, with the recovery ranging from 37% in an alluvial soil to 73% in an acid sulfate soil. The degradation of carbaryl was more rapid under flooded conditions than under nonflooded conditions. A bacterium, Pseudomonas cepacia, isolated from a flooded soil amended with a related methylcarbamate pesticide carbofuran, degraded carbaryl in a mineral medium supplemented with yeast extract.

Detection of Giardia lamblia antigen in the feces by counterimmunoelectrophoresis.
The presence of Giardia lamblia antigen in stools of symptomatic and asymptomatic giardiasis patients was studied by counterimmunoelectrophoresis using anti-G. lamblia (Portland strain I) trophozoite antibodies. This test could detect antigen in feces of 94% of giardiasis patients. However, it failed to differentiate between symptomatic and asymptomatic Giardia infection. There were no false-positive results in children with other diseases. Antigen in the stools disappeared within 1 to 2 weeks after eradication of infection with specific treatment. The overall sensitivity of this test in detecting G. lamblia antigen in stool was 94%, and the specificity was 95%.
Gastric leiomyoma presenting as gastric volvulus.
We report a 45-year-old lady who presented with recurrent vomiting, retching and epigastric pain, and was diagnosed to have gastric volvulus. After correction of the volvulus by endoscopic detorsion, a tumor was seen along the greater curvature. This was excised surgically. Histology showed leiomyoma.
