[Kessler arthroplasty of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb in arthrosis and arthritis].

Early results of the KESSLER-Implant in 11 patients are presented. 7 patients suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, 1 from psoriatic arthropathy. For technical reasons this endoprosthesis seems to be especially suitable for patients with rheumatoid disease. By remodelling the articular surface of the trapezium corresponding to the implant, it is possible to reestablish stability even in cases with severe destruction and subluxation of the CM joint.

[The rheumatic foot and its treatment].

The alterations of form and function of the rheumatoid foot are derived from the pathomechanical conditions. The latter are used as a measure for the treatment. Type and frequency of inflammatory alterations are studied by x-ray examination and new aspects are stressed. The deformities of the rheumatoid foot can be explained conclusively through the interaction of functional, gravitational, inflammatory and anatomical influences. The deformities of the toes are induced to a great extent by the deformities of the proximal part of the foot. The possibilities of surgical treatment are discussed in detail and systematically. The results of partially own methods are compared with those of other authors, and conclusions regarding the indication are drawn. The conservative treatment is considered under the aspects of the enlarged surgical possibilities. The need of a close cooperation between the different specialists is emphasized.

[The importance, indication and operative technique of dorsal synovectomy of the knee joint in rheumatic diseases (author's transl)].

From a logical basis, it is reasonable to postulate that a synovectomy must be maximally as complete as possible. The indications and operative technique of radical synovectomy of the dorsal part of the knee joint are presented. The statistically significant improvement of the results of knee synovectomy by an additional dorsal approach is referred to.

[Lipomas in the head and neck region].

According to the present state of knowledge, lipomas must be classified as rare benign tumours of the fatty tissue with low quality of dignity. Apart from their pathogenesis, the present paper discusses their histology as well as their clinical picture and therapy, evaluating the patients who had passed through the Outpatients' Department of the Rostock University Clinic and Policlinic of Stomatology between 1959 and 1974. Of 267 patients with benign tumors only 15 (9 men, 6 women) had lipomas in the cephalocervical region. The mean age at treatment beginning was 44.4 years. Only 8 patients had been referred with the provisional diagnosis of lipoma; the remaining patients, with the diagnosis of "questionable tumour", "fibroma", "lymphoma", "cervical cyst" and "submental dermoid".
