Detection of mycoplasmas in urethral swabs from HIV-1 infected patients and control individuals using culture techniques and polymerase chain reaction.

The objective of the present study was to determine the prevalence of certain mycoplasma species, i.e., Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma penetrans, in urethral swabs from HIV-1 infected patients compared to swabs from a control group. Mycoplasmas were detected by routine culture techniques and by the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technique, using 16SrRNA generic primers of conserved region and Mycoplasma penetrans specific primers. The positivity rates obtained with the two methods were comparable. Nevertheless, PCR was more sensitive, while the culture techniques allowed the quantification of the isolates. The results showed no significant difference (p < 0.05) in positivity rates between the methods used for mycoplasma detection.

Monocular diplopia related to asymmetric corneal topography after laser in situ keratomileusis.

PURPOSE: To show a specific relationship between monocular diplopia and corneal refractive asymmetry after laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). METHODS: One hundred thirty-eight eyes of 98 patients who underwent LASIK for myopia between -2.12 and -17.75 D were examined under room-lighted conditions. We examined 51 eyes at 2 weeks, 46 eyes at 3 months, 32 eyes at 6 months, and 9 eyes at 1 year after LASIK. We attempted to correlate the presence of monocular diplopia with their corneal topographical features. RESULTS: Eight eyes of five patients (five eyes at 2 weeks, three eyes at 3 months after LASIK) produced symptoms of monocular diplopia. These symptomatic patients had a common corneal topographical feature caused by decentralized or inhomogeneous ablation. Every pupillary area in the patients' topographies contained steeper and flatter areas. The range of refractive power variation in these asymmetric areas was at least 1.50 D. The location of the secondary image correlated with the direction of the steeper area in all eight eyes. Pinhole viewing eliminated or reduced the prominence of secondary images in every case. CONCLUSION: Monocular diplopia following LASIK appears to correlate with postoperative corneal refractive power variation inside the pupillary area, caused by decentralized or inhomogeneous ablation.

Computed tomography of neck lymph nodes involved with malignant lymphoma: comparison with ultrasound.

CT images of 24 patients with head and neck lymphoma were retrospectively reviewed, compared with ultrasonograms, and compared with CT images of 13 patients with lymph node metastases. In nine (38%) of 24 patients, some lymph nodes with lymphomatous involvement showed a spotty or linear pattern of contrast enhancement. In two of these nine patients, a dendritic pattern of contrast enhancement between multiple enlarged lymph nodes was observed. The same pattern appeared as spotty, linear, or dendritic hyperechoic areas on the ultrasonogram. None of 13 patients with lymph node metastases showed a spotty, linear, or dendritic pattern of contrast enhancement. Ten of 13 (77%) showed ring-like contrast enhancement on CE-CT images. The spotty or linear contrast enhancement in enlarged lymph nodes and the dendritic contrast enhancement in confluent lymph nodes could be useful CT findings in diagnosing nodal involvement with malignant lymphoma.

Observation of a child with multiple submerged primary teeth.

The authors presented a case report of a seven-year-old male with eight submerged primary molars and a primary lateral incisor. Two major treatment modalities, tooth extraction and observation, were reported. In this case we applied the two alternative modalities and observed the patient for five years. The permanent successors were in the process of almost normal eruption after the extraction of the submerged primary teeth; no eruption and more severe submerging were observed, however, in the permanent successors of the submerged primary teeth that were not extracted. These results suggest that submerged or impacted primary teeth should be extracted immediately when they are moderately or severely submerged.
