Muscle activity during function and its correlation with craniofacial morphology in a sample of subjects with Class II, Division 1 malocclusions.

To evaluate the relationship between craniofacial morphology and jaw muscle activity in a sample of skeletal Class II, Division 1 malocclusions, electromyographic and cephalometric analyses were undertaken in a sample of twenty adolescent children. For each subject, electromyographic activity was recorded from the left anterior temporal, masseter, and orbicularis oris muscles at rest, in maximum intercuspation, and during clenching. In addition, mandibular displacement was measured simultaneously with a kinesiograph, and twenty-seven anatomic points were digitized from a lateral head film. A computer-based system was used to sample the data and to determine correlation coefficients between selected parameters. Five significant correlations were found (at the 99 percent confidence level) for the rest position data. High anterior temporal amplitude was correlated with flat palatal planes and large ramus heights; high masseter amplitude correlated with upright maxillary incisors. Anterior positions of the mandible at rest correlated with flat occlusal planes and small pogonions. In contrast, significant correlation coefficients could not be identified for the maximum intercuspation recordings. However, low orbicularis oris muscle amplitude during clenching was correlated with high lower face height, overerupted mandibular molars, and elongated maxillary incisors. This interdependence of jaw muscle activity and craniofacial morphology in Class II, Division 1 subjects suggests a contribution from the musculature to the development of the dentition.

Effect of u.v. rays on 7-dehydrocholesterol content in rat skin.

Long-term exposure of rat to ultraviolet irradiation affected the cholesterol metabolism in the skin. The 7-dehydrocholesterol content was increased to 1.6 times of non-irradiated rat. However, the cholesterol content was not altered. Ultraviolet-induced precholecalciferol and cholecalciferol bound with an activator protein of delta 5,7 sterol-delta 7-reductase. This observation suggested that precholecalciferol and cholecalciferol bound with an activator protein of delta 5,7 sterol-delta 7-reductase. This observation suggested that precholecalciferol and cholecalciferol inhibit the conversion of 7-dehydrocholesterol to cholesterol and accumulate 7-dehydrocholesterol. The action of ultraviolet rays on the cholesterol metabolism in the skin may be explained as the action of ultraviolet-induced precholecalciferol and cholecalciferol.

Influence of chlorpromazine administered to rat dams in the peripartum and nursing periods on the learning behavior of the second generation.

Behavioral teratogenicity of chlorpromazine (CPZ) was studied in rats by observing the spontaneous motor activity level and learning behavior of light-dark discrimination in the second generation. The dams were treated with CPZ from day 17 of gestation to postpartum day 21 at doses of 2 mg/kg sc. once daily in one group and 4 mg/kg sc. twice daily in the other. The activity level of F1 was measured at 6 to 7 weeks of age for 68 hrs by a magnetic field counter. The learning experiments were started at 5 weeks of age in one group and 15 weeks of age in the other on the behaviors of the continuous food reinforcement at the beginning, then the light-dark discrimination, and finally the reversal discrimination learning. As the results, no influence of the CPZ treatment was observed in the activity level and learning behaviors of the continuous food reinforcement and light-dark discrimination. But, in the reversal learning of the light-dark discrimination an impairment or delay was observed in some F1 of the CPZ groups. Thus, the significance of observing reversal learning behavior in the assessment of the behavioral teratogenicity of drugs has been shown.

Formation of fatty acid esterified vitamin D3 in rat skin by exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

The formation of fatty acid esters of vitamin D3 was demonstrated in rat skin exposed to artificial ultraviolet rays by using multi-dimensional high-performance liquid chromatography, ultraviolet spectrophotometry, and gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. This result indicated that the fatty acid esters of 7-dehydrocholesterol in rat skin (at least 80% of 7-dehydrocholesterol in rat skin is esterified) is also isomerized into vitamin D3 ester in vivo. The initial percentage of the esterified form was 84.3% and this did not significantly change up to the time when about half of the skin total vitamin D3 disappeared (2 days). Consequently, it was speculated that the vitamin D3 ester was delivered into the blood circulation from skin without having been hydrolyzed. This was supported by the presence of vitamin D3 ester in rat plasma exposed to ultraviolet radiation. In addition, in connection with the study of the restriction of vitamin D3 synthesis, distribution of total vitamin D3 in rat skin exposed to ultraviolet irradiation in vivo was compared with that in isolated skin exposed to ultraviolet radiation. The dermal layer of the isolated skin contained about 4 times more total vitamin D3 than that of in vivo skin. This finding suggests not only that ultraviolet rays could not penetrate deeply into the in vivo skin, but that the restriction of cutaneous synthesis of vitamin D3 observed in vivo may arise from this reduced penetration of ultraviolet rays.

[Case of malignant fibrous histiocytoma associated with squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus].

A 46-year-old male was admitted complaining of swallowing disturbance. Esophagogram demonstrated a polypoid mass 15 cm in length at the mid portion of the esophagus. Esophagofiberscopy revealed a large greenish friable mass. Subtotal esophagectomy, cervical esophago-gastrostomy and lymph node dissection were performed. The resected polypoid mass was elliptical and measured 14 X 4 X 4 cm. The histological diagnosis of the pedunculated mass was Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma. An area of poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, in the mucosal layer, was present at the stalk of the polypoid tumor. Lymph nodes showed no tumor involvement.

[Complement components, whole complement activity, and circulating immune complexes in neoplastic diseases].

Serum levels of complement components(cc), whole complement activity (CH 50), and circulating immune complexes (IC) were measured in 41 patients with neoplastic diseases. The level of cc was higher than in healthy controls; the levels of C1q, C1INA, C4, C3c, C3ACT, C5, and C9 were statistically higher. In patients with lung cancer, the levels of cc were correlated with the clinical stage as well as the performance status. Both the IC serum level and the incidence of high serum IC levels in lung cancer were higher in stage III and IV than in stage I and II. Serum CH 50 was higher than in healthy controls, but not correlated with the clinical stage.
