Fish consumption and colorectal cancer: a case-reference study in Japan.

Several clinical studies have suggested that supplementation with fish oils can suppress the proliferation of colorectal mucosa and therefore inhibit the development of colorectal cancer. However, epidemiological evidence concerning fish consumption and risk is inconsistent and limited. To clarify the association between intake of fish and the likelihood of developing colorectal cancer, we conducted a large sample size case-reference study with 928 cases of colon cancer, 622 of rectal cancer and 46886 cancer-free outpatient references aged 40-79 years. The data showed frequent raw/cooked fish intake to be associated with decreased odds ratio (OR) 0.68 with 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.47-0.99 for male colon cancer, especially for males aged over 60 years, smokers and frequent meat eaters. A marginal decrease in the OR (OR 0.58, 95% CI 0.31-1.07) was also detected for female rectal cancer, especially in the regular physical exercise subgroup. However, frequent dried/salted fish intake was found to be associated with increased OR in females younger than 60 years old and alcohol drinkers. Although there is some possible bias in epidemiological studies, the results suggest that frequent raw/cooked fish intake may decrease the risk while dried/salted fish, in contrast, may exert a detrimental effect.

Inactivation differences of microorganisms by low pressure UV and pulsed xenon lamps.

UV disinfection has been applied to water treatment in recent years with low-pressure and medium-pressure UV lamps mainly used as the light source. In general, UV disinfection is considered to be inefficient with water of high turbidity because of inhibition of light penetration. Additionally, photoreactivation may be a problem that should be considered in case a disinfected water is discharged to the environment where sunlight causes reactivation. Recently, other types of lamps have been proposed including a flush-type lamp (such as a pulsed-xenon lamp) that emits high energy and wide wavelength intermittently. In this study, the difference between inactivation efficiencies by low-pressure UV (LPUV) and pulsed-xenon (PXe) lamps was investigated using two coliphage types and three strains of Escherichia coli. PXe had a suppressive effect on photoreactivation rate of the E. coli strains even though there was no significant effect on inactivation rate and maximum survival ratio after photoreactivation. PXe also had a benefit when applied to high turbidity waters as no tailing phenomena were observed in the low survival ratio area although it was observed in LPUV inactivation. This efficiency difference was considered to be due to the difference in irradiated wavelength of both lamps.

Alcohol, tobacco and breast cancer--collaborative reanalysis of individual data from 53 epidemiological studies, including 58,515 women with breast cancer and 95,067 women without the disease.

Alcohol and tobacco consumption are closely correlated and published results on their association with breast cancer have not always allowed adequately for confounding between these exposures. Over 80% of the relevant information worldwide on alcohol and tobacco consumption and breast cancer were collated, checked and analysed centrally. Analyses included 58,515 women with invasive breast cancer and 95,067 controls from 53 studies. Relative risks of breast cancer were estimated, after stratifying by study, age, parity and, where appropriate, women's age when their first child was born and consumption of alcohol and tobacco. The average consumption of alcohol reported by controls from developed countries was 6.0 g per day, i.e. about half a unit/drink of alcohol per day, and was greater in ever-smokers than never-smokers, (8.4 g per day and 5.0 g per day, respectively). Compared with women who reported drinking no alcohol, the relative risk of breast cancer was 1.32 (1.19-1.45, P<0.00001) for an intake of 35-44 g per day alcohol, and 1.46 (1.33-1.61, P<0.00001) for >/=45 g per day alcohol. The relative risk of breast cancer increased by 7.1% (95% CI 5.5-8.7%; P<0.00001) for each additional 10 g per day intake of alcohol, i.e. for each extra unit or drink of alcohol consumed on a daily basis. This increase was the same in ever-smokers and never-smokers (7.1% per 10 g per day, P<0.00001, in each group). By contrast, the relationship between smoking and breast cancer was substantially confounded by the effect of alcohol. When analyses were restricted to 22 255 women with breast cancer and 40 832 controls who reported drinking no alcohol, smoking was not associated with breast cancer (compared to never-smokers, relative risk for ever-smokers=1.03, 95% CI 0.98-1.07, and for current smokers=0.99, 0.92-1.05). The results for alcohol and for tobacco did not vary substantially across studies, study designs, or according to 15 personal characteristics of the women; nor were the findings materially confounded by any of these factors. If the observed relationship for alcohol is causal, these results suggest that about 4% of the breast cancers in developed countries are attributable to alcohol. In developing countries, where alcohol consumption among controls averaged only 0.4 g per day, alcohol would have a negligible effect on the incidence of breast cancer. In conclusion, smoking has little or no independent effect on the risk of developing breast cancer; the effect of alcohol on breast cancer needs to be interpreted in the context of its beneficial effects, in moderation, on cardiovascular disease and its harmful effects on cirrhosis and cancers of the mouth, larynx, oesophagus and liver.

Oligonucleotide probe for detecting Enterobacteriaceae by in situ hybridization.

AIMS: To develop oligonucleotide probes for visualizing bacteria belonging to Enterobacteriaceae. METHODS AND RESULTS: 24-mer oligonucleotide probe (probe D) was designed by comparison of 16S rDNA sequences of 35 species of Enterobacteriaceae, eight species of Vibrionaceae and six species of Pasteurellaceae. The sequence of the probe corresponding to the complementary sequence of a position 1251-1274 of Escherichia coli 16S rRNA was found to be a highly conserved region of 16S rDNA sequence in Enterobacteriaceae different from that of Vibrionaceae and Pasteurellaceae. The fluorescent dye-labelled probe was tested for the specificity by in situ hybridization and epifluorescence microscopy. Seventy-six out of 78 strains belonging to Enterobacteriaceae were visualized in an optimal hybridization condition. No bacterial strains belonging to Vibrionaceae (31 strains) and Gram-positive bacteria (three strains) were visualized. CONCLUSIONS: In situ hybridization using probe D allows the detection of bacterial cells belonging to Enterobacteriaceae without false positive reaction. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: In situ hybridization techniques using the probe D are potential tools for detecting Enterobacteriaceae in food and water samples.

Detection of Proteobacteria from the rumen by PCR using methanotroph-specific primers.

AIMS: To detect Proteobacteria, including methanotrophs, from the rumen fluid and the bacteria inhabiting the rumen epithelium. METHODS AND RESULTS: Proteobacteria inhabiting the rumen were detected by PCR using methanotroph-specific primers. The detected Proteobacteria were divided into clusters A, B, and C in addition to one clone, which was distinct from the clusters and closely related to Nitrosomonas sp. The clusters A, B, and C were close to Succinivibrio dextrinosolvens, Enterobacter cloacae, and Actinobacillus minor, respectively. The clones obtained from the rumen fluid each belonged to cluster A or B. The clones obtained from the rumen epithelium belonged to cluster B or C or to Nitrosomonas sp. CONCLUSIONS: It has been assumed that the rumen fluid and the rumen epithelium host different populations of Proteobacteria. Moreover, detection of Nitrosomonas from the rumen epithelium would indicate the possibility that the bacterium oxidizes ammonia and methane on the rumen surface. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: These findings suggest that the rumen fluid and the epithelium support different microbial populations, which would play specific roles in rumen function. Future study should focus on the relationship between these communities and physiological functions in the rumen.

Establishment of FSH-responsive cell lines by transfection of pre-ovulatory human granulosa cells with mutated p53 (p53val135) and Ha-ras genes.

Human granulosa cells were immortalized by transfection of the primary cells with a mutated p53 gene in combination with the Harvey-ras oncogene, yielding established cell lines designated HGP53. Here we report that forskolin, 8-Br-cAMP and FSH modulate cell growth and steroidogenesis in HGP53 cells. Low concentrations of 8-Br-cAMP or FSH stimulated cell proliferation, while higher doses attenuated cell proliferation. Progesterone production was already evident at an FSH concentration of 0.3 mIU/ml and was maximally stimulated (50-135-fold) at 50 mIU/ml of FSH. Expression levels of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), adrenodoxin and cytochrome P450scc were enhanced 64-, 48- and 3.1-fold respectively by FSH stimulation. Dexamethasone enhanced FSH/cAMP-induced steroidogenesis and this effect involved a marked elevation in the intracellular level of adrenodoxin and P450scc, concomitantly with a marked decrease in StAR. Conversely, basic fibroblast growth factor attenuated FSH-stimulated progesterone production, and this effect involved reductions in adrenodoxin, P450scc and StAR levels. These data suggest that the rate of steroidogenesis may be determined by the ratio of StAR and P450scc, rather than by the level of each protein alone. Whereas FSH at a low dose slightly reduced apoptosis induced by serum withdrawal from HGP53 cells, higher doses enhanced it. Dexamethasone dramatically attenuated FSH- or forskolin-enhanced apoptosis. In conclusion, FSH-dependent mechanisms of differentiation, luteinization and apoptosis can be preserved in human granulosa cells immortalized by mutated p53. Moreover, this system lends itself to studies on cross-talk between the endocrine and paracrine factors that control these processes.

Cloning and sequencing of the beta-glucosidase gene from Acetobacter xylinum ATCC 23769.

The beta-glucosidase gene (bglxA) was cloned from the genomic DNA of Acetobacter xylinum ATCC 23769 and its nucleotide sequence (2200 bp) was determined. This bglxA gene was present downstream of the cellulose synthase operon and coded for a polypeptide of molecular mass 79 kDa. The overexpression of the beta-glucosidase in A. xylinum caused a tenfold increase in activity compared to the wild-type strain. In addition, the action pattern of the enzyme was identified as G3ase activity. The deduced amino acid sequence of the bglxA gene showed 72.3%, 49.6%, and 45.1% identity with the beta-glucosidases from A. xylinum subsp. sucrofermentans, Cellvibrio gilvus, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, respectively. Based on amino acid sequence similarities, the beta-glucosidase (BglxA) was assigned to family 3 of the glycosyl hydrolases.

Placenta previa of a succenturiate lobe: a report of two cases.

Previa of a succenturiate placenta is a rare condition. We report two cases of such lesions, which could not be detected by transabdominal ultrasound. When no cause of uterine bleeding is detected, previa of a posterior succenturiate lobe should be considered, and transvaginal ultrasound should be performed.

6-formylpterin intracellularly generates hydrogen peroxide and restores the impaired bactericidal activity of human neutrophils.

The effects of 6-formylpterin on the impaired bactericidal activity of human neutrophils were examined ex vivo. When neutrophils isolated from fresh blood were incubated with 6-formylpterin, the intracellular production of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) occurred. The H(2)O(2) generation by 6-formylpterin in neutrophils occurred in the presence of diphenyleneiodonium (DPI), an inhibitor of NADPH-oxidase. When neutrophils were incubated with DPI, the killing rate of catalase-positive bacteria, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), significantly decreased. This impaired bactericidal activity of the DPI-treated neutrophils was a mimic for chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). However, the killing rate of the DPI-treated neutrophils against E. coli and S. aureus significantly increased when 6-formylpterin was administered. Since 6-formylpterin intracellularly generates H(2)O(2) independent from the NADPH-oxidase, it was considered to improve the impaired bactericidal activity of the DPI-treated neutrophils. The use of 6-formylpterin may serve as an option of therapy for CGD.

Leptin attenuates follicular apoptosis and accelerates the onset of puberty in immature rats.

Human and rat granulosa cells express receptors to leptin which synergies with glucocorticoid hormones in stimulation of ovarian steroidogenesis. To examine whether leptin affects follicular development and maturation, we injected recombinant ovine leptin (300 ng-10 microg/animal) daily to immature 21 day-old female rats. Non-treated rats reached puberty at 44.5+/-1.6 (n=9) days. In contrast, in leptin treated animals, puberty was reached at 34.5+/-1.6 (n=9) days. Ovarian sections revealed hypertrophy of granulosa cells in leptin treated animals. Moreover, the number of ovulations was 2-fold higher in the treated animals compared to controls (3-4 ovulations versus 7-8 on the first three estrous cycles, P<0.001). Leptin dramatically reduced incidence of follicular apoptosis measured by TUNEL, and was already evident after 7 days of leptin injection (12% of apoptosis in leptin treated group compared to 52% in controls, P<0.001). Maximal protection against apoptosis was achieved at 1-3 microg leptin/animal. The levels of FSH, LH, progesterone and the steroidogenic factors ADX and STAR were elevated earlier in development in the leptin treated animals compared to control animals which is in line with the achievement of early puberty in the leptin treated animals compared to non treated ones. To reveal whether modulation of death and survival genes is involved in leptin attenuation of follicular apoptosis, we examined the expression of the survival gene Bcl-2 and the death gene Bax in Western blots of ovarian homogenates. There was a pronounced elevation in Bcl-2 expression during 7-14 days of leptin injections up to 16.3-fold (P<0.001) compared to Bcl-2 expression in controls. Bax expression was elevated only 3.4 fold (P<0.001), leading to an increase in the Bcl-2/Bax ratio of 4.7 fold (P<0.001). Expression of the tumor suppressor gene p 53 and the oncogene Mdm2 did not change significantly. Our data suggests that leptin may be involved in accelerating follicular maturation by attenuating follicular atresia and increasing the ratio of Bcl-2/Bax.

HLA-A*26, HLA-B*4002, HLA-B*4006, and HLA-B*4801 alleles predispose to adult T cell leukemia: the limited recognition of HTLV type 1 tax peptide anchor motifs and epitopes to generate anti-HTLV type 1 tax CD8(+) cytotoxic T lymphocytes.

Genetic risk for adult T cell leukemia (ATL) has been implicated by ethnic and familial segregation of ATL patients from HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). To clarify the genetic risk for ATL, we characterized HLA class I alleles of ATL patients and analyzed the anchor motifs of HTLV-1 peptides binding to HLA class I molecules, using 291 lines of anti-HTLV-1 CD8(+) cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) generated in vitro with a total of 165 synthetic peptides for HTLV-1 Tax and Env proteins. Allele frequencies of HLA-A*26, B*4002, B*4006, and B*4801 were significantly higher in ATL patients than in HAM/TSP patients and asymptomatic HTLV-1 carriers in southern Japan. CD8(+) CTL analysis revealed the HTLV-1 Tax peptide sequence to completely lack anchor motifs of peptides binding to HLA-A*26,B*4002, and B*4006 molecules but to possess one anchor for HLA-B*4801, while the HTLV-1 Env peptide sequence had many anchor motifs for HLA-A*26, B*4002, B*4006, and B*4801 molecules. Most ATL patients featured heterozygous HLA class I alleles composed of HLA-A*26, B*4002, B*4006, and B*4801, with a lower number of HTLV-1 Tax peptide anchor motifs and epitopes generating anti-HTLV-1 Tax CD8(+) CTLs than individuals possessing other HLA alleles. The relationship between Tax epitope and ATL incidence was verified by the significantly decreased number of HTLV-1 Tax epitopes in ATL patients compared with asymptomatic HTLV-1 carriers (p < 0.01) as well as late onset ATL patients (p < 0.001). These results indicate that HLA-A*26, B*4002, B*4006, and B*4801 alleles predispose to ATL because of the limited recognition of HTLV-1 Tax peptide anchor motifs and epitopes capable of generating anti-HTLV-1 Tax CD8(+) CTLs.

Regular consumption of green tea and the risk of breast cancer recurrence: follow-up study from the Hospital-based Epidemiologic Research Program at Aichi Cancer Center (HERPACC), Japan.

Experimental studies suggest various features of anticancer activity of green tea including inhibitory effect of tumor invasion and metastasis. This study was conducted to examine the association between regular green tea consumption prior to diagnosis and subsequent risk of breast cancer recurrence. The Hospital-based Epidemiologic Research Program at Aichi Cancer Center (HERPACC) was started in 1988, in which information on lifestyle has routinely been collected from all first-visit outpatients by questionnaire. A total of 1160 new surgical cases of female invasive breast cancers with HERPACC information diagnosed between June 1990 and August 1998 were followed up through December 1999, and the risk (hazard ratio: HR) of recurrence was assessed with reference to daily green tea consumption using a Cox proportional hazard model. During 5264 person-years of follow-up, 133 subjects (12%) were documented to suffer recurrence of breast cancer. A decreased HR for recurrence adjusted for stage was observed with consumption of three or more daily cups of green tea (HR=0.69, 95% confidence interval (95%CI)=0.47-1.00). Particularly in stage I, the HR was decreased statistically significantly (HR=0.43, 95%CI=0.22-0.84). A similar tendency was observed for stage II subjects, but was not present among more advanced stages. Although careful interpretation is needed, these results suggest the possibility that regular green tea consumption may be preventive against recurrence of breast cancer in early stage cases.

Phylogenetic analysis of archaeal 16S rRNA libraries from the rumen suggests the existence of a novel group of archaea not associated with known methanogens.

Molecular diversity of rumen archaea was analyzed by PCR amplification and sequencing of two 16S rRNA clone libraries prepared from the bovine rumen fluid using two different archaea-specific primer sets. The first library of 19 clones which was generated with primers D30 and D33, produced essentially two groups of sequences, one affiliated with Methanomicrobium mobile (21% of clones) and the other -- with the uncultured archaeal sequences from anaerobic digester, which are distantly associated with Thermoplasma (79% of clones). The second library of 25 clones, which was generated with primers 0025e Forward and 1492 Reverse, produced a higher degree of diversity: in addition to the previous two groups, with the M. mobile- (56%) and Thermoplasma-associated sequences (20%), four clones (16%) were identified as Methanobrevibacter spp. The remaining two sequences were associated with unidentified archaeal sequences from the rumen and swine waste. Phylogenetic placement of eight almost complete 16S rRNA sequences revealed the existence of a novel cluster of the rumen Euryarchaeota, which is not affiliated with the known methanogenic archaea.

Expression of p53 protein related to smoking and alcoholic beverage drinking habits in patients with esophageal cancers.

In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), we used immunohistochemical analysis to further elucidate the correlation of p53 protein expression with clinicopathological factors, as well as with risk factors, such as tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption and a family history of cancer, using odds ratios (ORs). The expression of p53 protein was demonstrated in 55.1% of 89 esophageal SCC cases examined by immunohistochemistry. The expression of p53 protein did not correlate with gender, age, histological grading, lymph node metastasis, or TNM stage. The prevalence of p53 expression was significantly higher in patients with multiple primary esophageal cancers (P<0.05). p53 expression did not correlate with prognosis in univariate survival analysis. The esophageal SCC in either smokers or alcohol users was 4.67-5.83 times more likely to express p53 protein, while the likelihood of p53 expression in patients who use both tobacco and alcohol was more than 14.0 times. However, a significant association was not found between p53 expression and a family history of cancer, this having an OR as low as 1.85. The expression of p53 protein did not correlate with clinicopathological factors and prognosis in univariate and multivariate survival analyses. In contrast, tobacco smoking and alcohol consumption were shown to be strongly associated with p53 mutations in esophageal carcinogenesis.

Postmenopausal obesity as a breast cancer risk factor according to estrogen and progesterone receptor status (Japan).

There have been inconsistent results on the association of postmenopausal obesity with breast cancer risk according to the estrogen (ER) and/or progesterone receptor (PR) status in the breast tissue, and this requires further evaluation. This study was designed to assess whether postmenopausal obesity differs according to receptor status. Information on risk factors was obtained from 1154 breast cancer cases and 21714 controls at Aichi Cancer Center Hospital, Nagoya, Japan between 1988 and 1992. The receptor status was known for 40% of cases. Obese postmenopausal women showed an increased risk of breast cancer (odds ratio (OR) for 5 kg of current weight=1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.10-1.25; OR for 1 kg/m(2) of body mass index (BMI)=1.07, 95% CI=1.04-1.10). The elevated OR was strongest for ER-positive, as well as with PR-positive, breast cancer among postmenopausal women who had a high BMI. The risk did not differ significantly according to ER status. However, obesity indices among postmenopausal women differed with borderline significance according to PR status. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that there is a gradient of risk for postmenopausal obesity according to hormonal receptor status, at least for PR status, although this was not statistically significant.

Association between polymorphisms of folate- and methionine-metabolizing enzymes and susceptibility to malignant lymphoma.

Genetic alteration is considered a probable cause of malignant lymphoma. Folate and methionine metabolism play essential roles in DNA synthesis and DNA methylation, and their metabolic pathways might thus affect disease susceptibility. In the present study, 2 polymorphisms were evaluated for a folate metabolic enzyme, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), and one was evaluated for methionine synthase (MS). The 2 polymorphisms, MTHFR677 C-->T and MTHFR1298 A-->C, are reported to reduce the enzyme activity, which causes intracellular accumulation of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate and results in a reduced incidence of DNA double-strand breakage. The MS2756 A-->G polymorphism also reduces the enzyme activity and results in the hypomethylation of DNA. To evaluate the association between malignant lymphoma susceptibility and these polymorphisms, hospital-based case-control study was conducted in Aichi Cancer Center. Ninety-eight patients with histologically confirmed lymphoma and 243 control subjects without cancer were evaluated. Unconditional logistic regression analyses revealed a higher susceptibility with the MTHFR677 CC and the MTHFR1298 AA genotypes (odds ratio, 2.26; 95% confidence interval, 1.26-4.02) when those harboring at least one variant allele in either polymorphism of MTHFR were defined as the reference. For the MS polymorphism, the MS2756 GG genotype also showed a higher susceptibility (odds ratio, 3.83; 95% CI, 1.21-12.1) than those with MS2756 AA or AG types. The significance was not altered when these 3 polymorphisms were evaluated in combination, and the results suggest that folate and methionine metabolism play important roles in the occurrence of malignant lymphomas. Further studies to confirm the association and detailed biologic mechanisms are now required.

Dietary factors and lung cancer risk in Japanese: with special reference to fish consumption and adenocarcinomas.

To investigate risk modification for lung cancer with diet in Japanese, we conducted a hospital-based case-control study and evaluated variation in influence with the histological type. We recruited 367 male and 240 female cases with adenocarcinomas, and 381 male and 57 female cases with squamous cell and small cell carcinomas. Controls comprised 2964 male and 1189 female cancer-free outpatients matched for sex and age with the cases. Odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for lung cancer were calculated with adjustment for potential confounding factors, using an unconditional logistic model. We found decreased ORs for adenocarcinomas in both males (OR = 0.51, 95% CI 0.31-0.84) and females (OR = 0.48, 95% CI 0.24-0.94) who consumed cooked/raw fish, but not dried/salted fish at the highest quartile frequency, compared with the lowest. Soybean curd consumption was associated with a decreased OR for female adenocarcinomas. Decreased ORs for squamous cell and small cell carcinomas were observed in males with frequent consumption of raw and green vegetables, fruit and milk, but consumption of carrot, pumpkin, egg and coffee was associated with increased ORs. This study suggests cooked/raw fish consumption lowers the risk of adenocarcinoma of the lung in Japanese.

Possible association of beta2- and beta3-adrenergic receptor gene polymorphisms with susceptibility to breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of beta2-adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) and beta3-adrenergic receptor (ADRB3) in both adipocyte lipolysis and thermogenic activity suggests that polymorphisms in the encoding genes might be linked with interindividual variation in obesity, an important risk factor for postmenopausal breast cancer. In order to examine the hypothesis that genetic variations in ADRB2 and ADRB3 represent interindividual susceptibility factors for obesity and breast cancer, we conducted a hospital-based, case-control study in the Aichi Cancer Center, Japan. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was given to 200 breast cancer patients and 182 control individuals, and pertinent information on lifestyle, family history and reproduction was collected. ADRB2 and ADRB3 genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) restriction fragment length polymorphism assessment. RESULTS: Twenty-five (12.4%) breast cancer patients and 32 (17.6%) control individuals were found to bear a glutamic acid (Glu) allele for the ADRB2 gene (odds ratio [OR] 0.67, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.38-1.18), and 60 (30.0%) breast cancer patients and 61 (33.5%) control individuals were found to bear an Arg allele for the ADRB3 gene (OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.55-1.31). A significantly lower risk was observed in those who carried the Glu ADRB2 allele and who reported first childbirth when they were younger than 25 years (OR 0.35; 95% CI 0.13-0.99). CONCLUSION: A potential association may exist between risk of breast cancer and polymorphisms in the ADRB2 and ADRB3 genes; further studies in larger samples and/or in different ethnic groups are warranted to investigate this potential association.
