We report the radiologic findings of sclerosed hemangioma (SH), a rare variant of hepatic hemangioma. Dynamic contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a hypodense mass in the liver with delayed enhancement. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed the mass as hypointense in relation to cerebrospinal fluid. The final diagnosis of SH was made pathologically. Although SH is rare, understanding its radiologic appearance is important to avoid unnecessary surgery and should be included in the differential diagnoses of hepatic lesion with delayed enhancement.

PURPOSE: To compare circadian changes of systemic circulation in patients with normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and normal subjects. METHODS: Forty-three patients with NTG and 226 normal subjects were enrolled in this study. Circulatory parameters, including blood pressure (BP) and pulse rate (PR), were measured in all subjects for 49 hours using an ambulatory monitoring system. In addition to a comparison between NTG patients and normal controls, the same parameters were compared between NTG patients who had progressive field defects and NTG patients who had stable field defects. RESULTS: The BP in NTG patients was significantly higher than in normal subjects. The nocturnal dip of BP in NTG patients was similar to the dip in normal subjects. However, the BP dip in NTG patients showing progressive visual field defects was significantly smaller than in patients with NTG showing stable visual field defects. Blood pressure fluctuation in sleep in the "progressive" patients was significantly greater than in the "stable" patients. Patients with NTG whose random BP was in a normal range showed a higher BP than normal subjects. The dip in PR in NTG patients was significantly lower than in normal subjects. CONCLUSIONS: An insufficient physiological nocturnal BP dip or a greater nocturnal fluctuation in BP may disturb the microcirculation of, and/or may directly damage, the optic nerve, resulting in increasing field loss in NTG.
Production of poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) [P(4HB)] by Comamonas acidovorans JCM10181 was studied by introducing additional copies of its PHA synthase gene and the beta-ketothiolase gene. A multi-copy-number broad-host-range plasmid vector, pJRD215, was modified to contain the strong hybrid trc promoter in order to express these genes in the wild-type C. acidovorans. Increased copy-number of genes resulted in significant increase in the activities of corresponding enzymes, which could further be increased by inducing with isopropyl-beta-D-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG), indicating that the expression is under the transcriptional control of the trc promoter. P(4HB) biosynthesis in the recombinant C. acidovorans increased 2-fold to constitute more than 60 wt% of the dry cell weight. No significant decrease in the number-average molecular weights of P(4HB) in the recombinant strain was observed when compared with that of the wild-type. Freeze-fracture electron microscopy of intracellular P(4HB) granules revealed almost similar fracture morphology to the well-known mushroom-type deformation shown by polyhydroxyalkanoates with medium-chain-length monomers.
We present two cases of hepatic angiomyolipoma in which the size and internal composition of the tumor changed during the course of follow-up study. The tissue elements composing the tumor are thought to grow or regress independently during the disease's clinical course. Radiologists should be aware that hepatic angiomyolipoma can change in size and internal composition during its natural course.
We report the radiological features of intrahepatic bile duct adenoma (BDA) in three patients. BDA was shown as a small mass located in the peripheral region of the liver with each imaging modality: a hypervascular mass on angiography and a mass appearing as early nodular enhancement found disproportionately evident compared with their small size and distinct delayed or prolonged enhancement on CT. BDA should be included in the diseases to be differentiated from hypervascular hepatic tumors.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on sutured wounds of the teat in dairy cattle. STUDY DESIGN: By using the Latin square design, the effect of LLLT was evaluated by radiography, measurement of microcirculation flow, histopathology, tensiometry, and hydroxyproline analysis. ANIMALS OR SAMPLE POPULATION: Sixteen teats of four dairy cattle. METHODS: Full thickness wounds were made on the cranial surface of the teats. Teats were distributed into four groups; group A and B wounds were closed with a Gambee pattern, group C and D wounds were closed with three-layers of continuous suture pattern. Group B and D wounds were treated with 3.64 J/cm2 of LLLT using a helium-neon system continuous wave (632.8 nm) output of 8.5 nW. RESULTS: The teat wall in non-LLLT groups was significantly thicker than in LLLT groups on day 7, 14 and 21. The mean blood flow differences between control and sutured sites in LLLT groups were significantly lower than those in non-LLLT groups. The morphology of the epidermis in LLLT groups more closely resembled the normal epidermis than that of non-LLLT groups. Collagen fibers in LLLT groups were denser, thicker, better arranged and more continuous with existing collagen fibers than those in non-LLLT groups. The mean tensile strength was significantly greater in LLLT groups than in non-LLLT groups. CONCLUSION: The LLLT affects various aspects of the healing process, including minimizing inflammation, formation of edema, improvement of skin regeneration and enhancement of collagen synthesis. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The LLLT could accelerate healing of sutured wounds of the teat in dairy cattle.
AIM: To clarify the time-related changes in cardiac function and the mechanism underlying the cardiac dysfunction present in diabetes mellitus, we studied mechanical responses induced by alpha(1)- and beta-adrenoceptors, the Ca(2+)-entry promoter Bay K 8644- and ryanodine (an agent known to inhibit Ca(2+) release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum) in papillary muscles from streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic and age-matched control rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats received a single injection of STZ (60 mg kg(-1)) via the tail vein to induce diabetes. For the mechanical studies, papillary muscle preparations were suspended in an organ bath and isometric contractions were measured in 1-, 4-, and 10-week STZ-induced diabetic and age-matched control rats. RESULTS: In 1-week diabetic rats, the contractions induced by isoproterenol, methoxamine and Bay K 8644 were unchanged (vs. age-matched controls). In 4-week diabetic rats, (a) the isoproterenol- and Bay K 8644-induced contractions were impaired, (b) sensitivity to ryanodine was reduced, whereas (c) the methoxamine-induced contraction was unchanged. In 10-week diabetic rats, the isoproterenol- and Bay K 8644-induced contractile responses were impaired and the sensitivity to ryanodine was reduced, but in sharp contrast the methoxamine-induced contraction was enhanced. Both the mRNA level for the alpha(1A) adrenoceptor (but not the alpha(1B) or alpha(1D) mRNAs) and alpha(1A) adrenoceptor protein were increased in 10-week diabetic rats (vs. age-matched controls). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that impairments of beta-adrenergic and Ca(2+)-handling mechanisms occur early in the development of cardiomyopathy in STZ-induced diabetic rats, and that this is followed by augmentation of alpha(1A) adrenoceptor-mediated inotropy due to alpha(1A) adrenoceptor upregulation.
Increasing numbers of intestinal adenocarcinomas in patients with Crohn's disease have been reported, but the strength of this association still needs to be elucidated. Adenocarcinoma has also been documented in different types of fistulous tracts associated with Crohn's disease. The first case of well-differentiated mucinous adenocarcinoma involving only enterocutaneous fistulae is reported in a patient with long-standing Crohn's disease complicated by persistent abdominal wall fistulous tracts. The malignant lesion arose from neoplastic transformation of columnar epithelium lining portions of the fistulae occurring as a result of either re-epithelialization of these inflammatory tracts or mural implantation of mucosal tissue secondary to prior ulceration. The patient has remained disease-free eight years after surgical resection of the tumour. Even though intestinal carcinoma is not as strongly associated with Crohn's disease as with ulcerative colitis, intestinal carcinoma should be considered in the setting of long-standing disease, previous intestinal exclusion surgeries and complications such as enterocutaneous or other types of fistulous tracts. The prognosis of such patients may be excellent with early diagnosis and treatment.
A 9-year-old boy with inner ear malformation complained of slight deafness and unsteadiness. CT revealed a normal cochlea despite enlargement of the lateral semicircular canals. The vertical semicircular canals developed more or less normally. The caloric test showed complete canal paresis bilaterally; however, a horizontal rotational stimulus elicited a vestibulo-ocular response, which showed only rightward and downward nystagmus, and their maximal slow-phase velocities were low. In addition, the examination of the vertical semicircular canal function using the head-tilted rotation test revealed a more active response, and the maximal slow-phase velocities were higher than those of a standard horizontal rotational test. These results suggest that the function of the vertical semicircular canal was well preserved and that it may have perceived the horizontal acceleration instead of the lateral semicircular canal.

The movement of the body's center of gravity was calculated in normal subjects and in vertiginous patients by using a strain gauge platform system and a ditigal computer. The total length of the loci traced by the center of gravity in 40 normal subjects during normal standing for 1 minute was 52.0 +/- 18.5 cm with eyes open, and 81.5 +/- 52.3 cm with eyes closed. The ratio of the total length with the eyes closed compared with that with the eyes open during normal standing for 1 minute was 1.56 +/- 0.56. The time course of the length of the locus was calculated every 10 seconds, and characteric curves were obtained. The dependability of this test appeared to be fairly accurate and the usefulness of this technique for the diagnosis of vertiginous or ataxic diseases is recommended.
In order to evaluate the current visual scoring technique in the late vertex-evoked response audiometry (ERA), the detectability of the response, errors in judgment, consistency between scorers and test-retest reliability were studied in adults and young children in waking and sleeping states. In waking adults, ERA proved to be a quite reliable and valid method for testing hearing objectively. On the contrary, a marked inconsistency was found in the appearance of the response in children during sleep. From a clinical standpoint, ERA in waking adults and sleeping children should be regarded as two substantially different methods.
