Effects of alpha-isoproterenol on denervation atrophy in orbicularis oculi muscle fibers.

The effect of the beta-adrenoceptor agonist isoproterenol on the denervated orbicularis oculi muscle was studied. We cut the facial nerve on the right side of eight rats and injected isoproterenol (5 mg/kg) into four rats every day. The animals were sacrificed after three weeks, and small pieces of the orbicularis oculi muscle were removed. Muscle fibers were separated into single fibers. Cytochrome oxidase enzyme staining was applied, and density of cytochrome oxidase enzyme product and diameter of individual muscle fibers were analyzed by computer. Some of the muscle fibers were observed under electron microscopy. The results showed that diameter and cytochrome oxidase enzyme activity of the orbicularis oculi muscle decreased by denervation, otherwise, it increased to near the normal level by administration of isoproterenol. Electron microscopic observation showed that the myosion filaments became thin and their arrangement were disordered by denervation and their findings recovered to be almost normal by isoproterenol administration. We concluded that isoproterenol could prevent the orbicularis oculi muscle from atrophying which caused by denervation.

Unilateral anomalous left common carotid artery; a case report.

An anomaly of the left common carotid artery was observed in a Japanese male cadaver during an anatomy class at the Saitama Medical School in 1995. The superior thyroid, lingual and facial arteries arose from the common carotid artery, and the posterior auricular, maxillary and superficial temporal arteries arose from the common carotid artery by a common trunk. The occipital and ascending pharyngeal arteries arose from the internal carotid artery. The left carotid body (glomus caroticum) was observed to be slightly below the lingual artery, behind the common carotid artery, and it was located at the level of the intervertebral disk between C2 and C3 or at the same level as the right carotid body. The carotid body was richly innervated by a branch of the glossopharyngeal nerve and by a plexus of sympathetic fibers from the vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves. We assumed that the artery above the level of the carotid body was the internal carotid artery; there was no specific external carotid artery and all branches of the external carotid artery arose from the internal carotid artery.

Immune responses in experimental allergic neuritis treated with corticosteroids.

The preventive and suppressive effects of methylprednisolone (MP) were investigated in 22 rabbits immunized with peripheral nerve myelin. Cellular reactivity to bovine P2 protein (P2) and anti-P2 antibody were also examined serially in these animals, using the lymphocyte proliferation test or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Seven animals (preventive group), given 15 mg/day of MP subcutaneously from Days 0-28, showed a significant reduction in maximal severity and a delay in onset in comparison with 8 control animals. The remaining 7 animals (suppressive group), given the same dose of MP from Days 11-28, also showed significantly milder clinical signs than those observed in the controls. However, cellular hypersensitivity to P2 were manifested at Day 14 (just after clinical onset) in the controls, as well as in the preventive or suppressive groups. Furthermore, anti-P2 antibody was detected in each group after Day 14. These results suggested that the interference of inflammatory processes of immune-mediated disease might respond to the preventive and suppressive effects of MP.

High-dose intravenous corticosteroids in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

The effectiveness of high-dose intravenous corticosteroid therapy for acute bouts of multiple sclerosis (MS) was evaluated in comparison with the conventional oral prednisolone therapy. Group I comprised 11 cases of MS treated with oral prednisolone, 30-60 mg daily, and group II comprised 16 cases treated with intravenous corticosteroids; 11 cases given 1000 mg of methylprednisolone for the initial 3 days followed by 100 mg of prednisolone, while the remaining 5 were given 100 mg of prednisolone alone. The initial dosage was maintained for 1 or 2 weeks in each group, tailing off with a period of several weeks of oral prednisolone. The clinical status was evaluated using Kurtzke's expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and functional system scale before and 1, 2 and 4 weeks after the initiation of therapy. EDSS score significantly declined from week 0 (before) to weeks 1, 2 and 4 in group II, respectively, whereas no significant decline of EDSS score was observed in group I. The frequency of improvement (0.5 of an increment in EDSS score) in group II was significantly higher than that in group I at weeks 1, 2 and 4. It was thus suggested that high-dose intravenous corticosteroid therapy might be more useful in acute bouts of MS, especially for obtaining an early improvement, than conventional oral prednisolone therapy.

[Energy expenditure of workers in a copper mill].

The results of the studies of energetic expenditure at 63 different workstations in copper mill were presented. 212 determinations of energetic expenditure were performed with direct colorimetry. 11% of the workstations exhibited a high energetic expenditure and hazardous working environment conditions. The results imply the necessity to modernize the mill and improve the preventive activities within industrial health service.

[Energy expenditure on basic work-posts in metallurgy].

The paper presents results of measurements of the whole energetic cost on the work-posts recognized by the management as basic. Altogether 121 determinations of energetic cost were performed on 18 different work-posts in two basic divisions of the steelworks. The results revealed that despite a considerable technical progress there is a significant number of work-posts, on which energetic cost exceeds 2600 kcal/8 hr. On these work-posts apart from the great energetic load, other loads, connected with material work environment on character of work, occur. This means that additional factors frequently increase their harmful effects on organism. The magnitude of energetic expenditure on a given work-post establishes the hierarchy of modernizational requirements for the plant's technical services.
