Deletion 14q and pericentric inversion 14.

A woman with deletion 14q as well as inversion 14 is presented, and physical signs are compared with those of patients with deletion long arm 13. No previous case of deletion long arm 14 has been published.

Chromosome Deletion

Microbial contamination of radionuclide generators.

Technetium-99m generators were grossly contaminted using 5 different strains of microorganisms. Elution of the generators showed that the number of microorganisms was reduced by a factor of 10(4)-10(6). There were no indications that the generators would support bacterial growth. It is concluded that it would be acceptable from a microbiologic point of view to omit autoclaving and membrane filtration of the final product provided that proper aseptic techniques are applied.

Reactive paranoid psychosis in a 47, XYY male.

A case of a reactive paranoid psychosis in a 47, XYY male is presented. It is suggested that reactive psychoses in double Y males would tend to be of paranoid type. Detailed case reports in future studies are desirable in order to evaluate the type of reactive psychosis in 47, XYY males.

Adult

Twenty psychotic males with Klinefelter's syndrome.

Twenty males with Klinefelter's syndrome discharged from psychiatric hospitals with diagnoses classified as psychosis are presented. It is concluded that the higher frequency of psychoses in males with the Klinefelter syndrome most probably is due to reactive psychosis. Personality traits commonly found in these males may explain this. The importance of early diagnosis of the Klinefelter syndrome is stressed, as it is believed that treatment and advice in due time may prevent most of the reactive psychoses.

Parasitological survey in Gorontalo North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

A survey for blood and intestinal parasites was carried out in the municipality of Gorontalo on the Minahasa peninsula of North Sulawesi. A total of 156 stool specimens were obtained from 83 males and 73 females. Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, unidentified dicrocoeliid-like ova and Entamoeba coli, in that order, were the most common intestinal parasites detected. Other intestinal parasites found less frequently were Entamoeba histolytica, Iodamoeba bütschlii, Endolimax nana, Giardia lamblia, Enterobius vermicularis and Chilomastix mesnili. Brugia malayi microfilaremiar were detected in 6% and Plasmodium falciparum in less than 1% of the population sampled.

The value of ethambutol in the treatment of tuberculous meningitis.

This is a prospective treatment study of 86 patients with tuberculous meningitis admitted to the Abbassia Fever Hospital Cairo, Egypt. The causative organism was cultured from the cerebro spinal fluidin 47 patients, was identified by Zeihl Nelson stain in five and in the remaining 34 patients the diagnosis was based on the clinical course and changes in the CSF chemistry and cell count. The data indicate that ethambutol can be used as a companion drug to INH and streptomycin in the treatment of the disease and that the mortality is directly dependent on the state of consciousness upon initiation of therapy.

Adolescent

Drug trial of Schistosoma japonicum enfection in Indonesia.

A limited drug trial was carried out on 42 cases with schistosomiasis japonica from an endemic area of Central Sulawesi. The drugs used were niridazole and stibophen. The effects of treatment were reported and discussed. The results of this study offer promise for treating S. japonicum infection in Central Sulawesi on a larger scale.
