The early phase of cartilage destruction by active cellular pannus in rheumatoid joints was observed under light and electron microscopy. In the early phase of pannus formation, cartilage was covered by several layers of fibroblast-like cells. This was also the case at the advancing edge of the pannus. Invasion of the cartilage by macrophage-like cells has been observed to start beneath this layer. Observations under electron microscope demonstrated that the main cells participating in the cartilage destruction at the cartilage-pannus junction were either fibroblast-like or macrophage-like cells, and suggested the possibility that these two types of cells were derived from synovial type A and type B cells. Morphologic observations also suggested a possibility of transformation of the fibroblast-like cell into the macrophage-like cell at the cartilage-pannus junction.
A postoperative classification for uterine cervical cancer has been made in consideration of the spatial spreading of cancer, biological malignancy of 120 cases which were treated with radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadnectomy. This classification corresponds extremely well to prognosis. The 5-year survival of the cases with prognostic index (P.I.) 9 or less was 96.1%, while those with P.I. above 10 showed 31.8%. In the Shinshu University School of Medicine clinic, this classification has become indispensable for decision of postoperative irradiation, selection of irradiation methods, and chemotherapeutic agents. Using this classification for individualized therapy, the survival rate was elevated in advanced cancer, class III or IV, with lymph node metastasis and P.I. above 10.

The HLA-DR antigen was investigated in synovial epithelia of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and normal traumatic joints, using monoclonal anti-human HLA-DR antibody and horseradish peroxidase-conjugated antibody. The HLA-DR staining was observed in an electron microscope. HLA-DR antigen was observed to be present on the surface of both macrophage-like (type A) and fibroblast-like (type B) cells in synovial epithelia in all rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and normal joints. Since type A and B cells are ultrastructurally considered to be of synovial origin, the findings suggest that the expression of HLA-DR antigen on the surface is one of the common attributes of type A and B cells in synovial epithelia, even before cellular infiltration of chronic inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. These cells may play an important role in the initiation of rheumatoid inflammation, since HLA-DR antigen is considered equivalent to murine Ia antigen.

The membrane potential and tension were recorded during contracture of mammalian ventricular muscles bathed in Tyrode solution with Ba2+ in the place of Ca2+. Strength of contracture increased with increasing Ba2+ concentration from 0.1 to 4 mM and reached a plateau above 4 mM. The membrane potential was depolarized to about -35 mV with 0.1 mM Ba2+ and to -20 mV with 5 mM Ba2+. When 0.5 mM Mn2+ was added to Ba2+-Tyrode solution, in which the muscle had been in a state of steady contracture, the muscle immediately started to relax to the resting level. In contrast, addition of 2 micrograms/ml epinephrine to Ba2+-Tyrode solution increased the strength of the contracture. Neither epinephrine nor Mn2+ caused any noticeable changes of the depolarized membrane potential. The results suggest that Ba2+ not only activates the contractile system but also depolarizes the membrane potential independently of activating the contractile system. These two remarkable actions of Ba2+ seem to be responsible for the long-lasting contracture.
It is clear that the prognosis of uterine cervical cancer depends on the spread of cancer, especially lymphnodes metastases and parametrial infiltration. The correct diagnosis of parametrial infiltration before treatment is, however, difficult and there are many over- and under-diagnosis. In this paper, we discuss the details of parametrial infiltration based on the radically hysterectomized specimens in Shinshu University Hospital from 1964 to 1978. In these period, 284 cases of uterine cervical cancer were operated by Okabayashi's radical hysterectomy and our postoperative classification were carried out. The results were as follows; 1) The incidence of parametrial infiltration were 16.4 in Stage Ib, 36.6% in Stage IIa, 57.5% in Stage IIb and 35.6% in all cases. 2) When divided the parametrial tissue into three parts, we could find carcinomatous infiltration into uterine part in 77.3% of positive cases, middle part in 16.2% and pelvic part in 16.2%. 3) The agreement between clinical diagnosis and histological findings were 72.2% in all cases. 4) The CPL classification had close relation with parametrial infiltration (C type; 0%, P type; 17.9%, L type; 61.8%). 5) The 5-year survival rate of patients with infiltration showed poor outcome (63.0% in 81 cases), but that with no infiltration had good prognosis (98.4% in 128 cases). In conclusion, parametrial infiltration is very important for treating the uterine cervical cancer patients.

Isolation of Yersinia enterocolitica was performed on healthy humans, animals and food, and growth of Y. enterocolitica on sliced ham at various temperature ranges was also examined. It was noticed that the most prevalent 0 group (03) in human infection was isolated from swine, pork and chopping boards. The storage of food in the refrigerator (5 degrees C) possibly increases the risk of infection since Y. enterocolitica is multipliable at low temperatures more readily than many other pathogenic bacteria. Pork and meat products contaminated with Y. enterocolitica, either primarily or secondarily, are probably the most important source of human infection.
