Carboxylesterases (EC 3.1.1). Amino acid composition of liver carboxylesterases.

The amino acid compositions of the carboxylesterases from chicken, ,orse, ox, sheep, and pig livers are reported and compared. As would be expected for this homologous series, the compositions show a general similarity. However, there are some significant differences, but the degree to which particular pairs of enzymes differ is consistent with the evolutionary history of the species from which they were isolated.

Effects of low humidity on small premature infants in servocontrol incubators. I. Decrease in rectal temperature.

19 small premature infants in servocontrol incubators, whose abdominal skin temperature was 36.0 +/- 0.3 degrees C, were subjected to alternate high- and low-humidity environments. With low humidity, rectal temperature dropped significantly below abdominal skin temperature. Skin was the predominant site of evaporative heat loss. The temperature was lower on naked skin than on an area covered by adhesive tape. Thus, servocontrol with low humidity increases evaporative heat loss and engenders a cycle of events that results in paradoxical body temperature decrease as the incubator temperature increases.

Testing theoretical explanations of mammography use.

The theory of care-seeking behavior was tested in the context of mammography use among midwestern women (N = 178). In multivariate logistic regressions, mammography adherence in the past 5 years was related to habit, the interaction of anxiety and barriers, belief in one's risk of breast cancer, age, and family history of breast cancer. Recent use of mammograms (i.e., in the past 1 or 2 years, depending on age) was related to norm and habit. Intention was related to utility beliefs regarding mammography, norm, habit, and belief in one's risk of breast cancer. As proposed from theory, anxiety and barriers interacted to influence adherence, the variables of habit, utility beliefs, and norm were related to either recent use or intention. Contrary to theory, belief in one's risk of breast cancer, age, and family history of breast cancer were related to adherence or intention after controlling for theoretically derived variables. The explanatory variables for each outcome were not identical, indicating that these mammography-related outcomes are characteristically different.

Linkage study of Best's vitelliform macular dystrophy (VMD2) in a large North American family.

Best's vitelliform macular dystrophy (VMD2) is an autosomal dominant retinal dystrophy for which the underlying biochemical cause is unknown. We used 11 genetic markers in the vicinity of the VMD2 gene in our study of a large North American family in which macular dystrophy characteristics overlap the broad definition of Best's disease. Significant evidence for linkage was found for markers D11S956 (Z = 5.88, theta = 0.04) and FCER1B (Z = 4.31, theta = 0.00). Recombination events localized the disease gene to the 5-cM interval D11S956-UGB, a genetic inclusion interval that substantially overlaps the VMD2 inclusion interval defined by recombinants at FCER1B and UGB observed by other research groups. The resulting exclusion of ROM1 from the genetic inclusion interval eliminates ROM1 defects as a possible cause of the disease in this family. Linkage studies of many families, including those that share most but not all features with classical Best's disease, will be needed to properly evaluate genetic heterogeneity and the range of phenotypic variation that can result from VMD2 defects.

Magnetic resonance imaging of sacrococcygeal tumors.

Five sacral tumors, 2 chordomas, 2 chondro- and/or osteosarcomas and one metastasis were examined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The tumor delineation was excellent in all cases, and in several respects superior to CT. The signal pattern from the chordoma differed considerably from the other tumors suggesting a potential for tumor differentiation with MRI.

Magnetic resonance imaging and tissue characterization of a renal cell carcinoma and its osseous metastasis. Report of a case.

A patient with renal cell carcinoma, first presenting because of symptoms from an osseous metastasis, was examined with CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Both the primary tumor and the metastasis were well demonstrated by both methods. MRI tissue characterization showed that the T1 values in the kidney and the metastasis were the same, as were the T2 values. This may mean a potential for the MRI to define primary tumors when a metastasis is found.
