The radiation response of SCCVII tumor cells in C3H/He mice varies with the irradiation conditions.

The radiation response of SCCVII tumor cells in C3H/He mice under various irradiation conditions was studied using an in vivo-in vitro assay. When tumor-bearing mice were irradiated without anesthesia or physical restraint, the tumor had a hypoxic fraction of 5.4%. Both anesthesia and immobilization of the tumor-bearing leg with adhesive tape produced significant increases in the hypoxic fraction (23 and 28%, respectively). Restraining the mouse in a jig without immobilizing the tumor-bearing leg also increased the hypoxic fraction (13%).

Contrast echocardiography in detection of portopulmonary venous anastomosis.

Portopulmonary venous anastomosis is a potential channel for systemic arterial embolization during embolization procedures for bleeding esophageal varices. To document the presence of such anastomoses, 15 patients with esophageal varices were studied by real-time contrast echocardiography combined with transhepatic cineportography. Cinefluorographic technique, which was applied for this purpose, occasionally failed to demonstrate the dynamic events in the left atrium because of rapid dilution of contrast medium. Echocardiography after the injection of dextrose solution into the gastric coronary vein allowed two-dimensional real-time images of contrast echoes in the left cardiac chambers. By combining these two methods, more reliable diagnostic information was obtained in five of the 15 patients studied.

Presence and synthesis of cholesterol in stable staphylococcal L-forms.

The sterol which was present in two strains of a stable staphylococcal L-form was analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography and combined gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The retention time of the sterol on gas-liquid chromatography was the same as that of authentic cholesterol. Analysis of the sterol by mass spectrometry showed a molecular ion at an m/e of 386 and the same patterns of major ions above an m/e of 145 as those of authentic cholesterol. As a result, the sterol in staphylococcal L-form was identified as cholesterol. A parent strain and its L-forms were cultured in medium containing [14C]acetate, and the synthesis of cholesterol was examined. In the L-forms, 0.52% of the total lipid radioactivity was found in cholesterol fraction, whereas no significant radioactivity was detected in the cholesterol fraction of the parent strain, indicating that staphylococcal L-forms have acquired the capacity to synthesize cholesterol.

The salt-resistance mechanism of Staphylococcus aureus examined by salt-sensitive mutants.

Two NaCl-sensitive mutants of S. aureus 209P (S-16 and S-23) were isolated after treatment of the parental strain with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine. Examination of the lipid components revealed that S-16 contained no cardiolipin and that S-23 contained only a small amount of cardiolipin. An increase of cardiolipin was indispensable for S. aureus proliferation in high NaCl medium.

Malignant mesenchymoma of the heart.

An autopsy case of malignant cardiac mesenchymoma, which arose in the atrial septum was presented. This tumor contained fibrosarcomatous, rhabdomyosarcomatous, chondrosarcomatous and osseous elements. A small metastatic lesion was found in the lung. Histogenesis of this tumor was also considered with a survey of literature.

Retinal dysplasia--A report of two surgical cases.

Two surgical cases of retinal dysplasia are reported. The one is unlateral (left-sided) with microphthalmus and the other bilateral. Chromosome test in the latter case showed no abnormality. In both cases the left eye was enucleated under the clinical diagnosis of retinoblastoma. There was a mass of loose connective tissue behind the lens which was covered by a completely detached retina. Histological examination revealed the presence of branching tubes of primitive retinal structure and large rosettes. The use of the term retinal dysplasia in distinction from Reese's syndrome is mentioned and some morphological characteristics of primitive retinal structure are described.
