Genetic polymorphism of six plasma proteins in the domestic cat.

Phenotypes of cat plasma apolipoprotein A4 (APOA4), antithrombin 3 (AT3), alpha 1B-glycoprotein (A1BG), transferrin (TF), vitamin D-binding protein (GC), and an unidentified pretransferrin (PTF) were determined by using simple methods of horizontal, nondenaturing gel electrophoresis followed by protein staining. The cat proteins were identified by immunoblotting using antisera for human plasma proteins. Three alleles were reported for each of TF and PTF, and two alleles were reported for each of GC, APOA4, AT3, and A1BG. The mongrels and Persians showed a high degree of polymorphism at most of the loci whereas the Birmans exhibited much less variation. Genetic evidence indicating the occurrence of a monomeric and a dimeric form of APOA4 in cat plasma was reported.

Linkage of the equine serum esterase (Es) and mitochondrial glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOTM) loci. A horse-mouse homology.

Three previously described electrophoretic phenotypes of mitochondrial glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOTM) in horse leukocytes are shown to be controlled by two codominant alleles at a single autosomal locus. The GOTM locus is linked to the serum esterase locus (Es), as no recombination between these loci was observed among 16 informative offspring in one sire family. The results assign GOTM to equine linkage group (LG) II. The hypothesis that a part of LG II (e-Es) shares homologies with mouse chromosome 8 is thus confirmed, as the murine homologue of GOTM is located within the cluster of esterase loci on chromosome 8. The assumed homology also involves rabbit LG VI, rat LG V, and human chromosome 16. The observation is a striking example of the conservation of linkage relationships between mammalian species.

Linkage of albino and hemoglobin beta-chain loci in the rabbit.

Genetic linkage between the albino (c) and hemoglobin beta-chain (Hb beta) genes in rabbits was demonstrated by means of segregation data from one full-sib family. The map distance was estimated at 9 +/- 6 cM, which is similar to the 8 cM previously estimated between the same pair of loci in both mice and rats. The interspecies conservation of the chromosome segment comprising c and Hb beta thus extends outside the rodent family. Indications that it also may be conserved in man are discussed.

Immediate effects on lung function of instilled human surfactant in mechanically ventilated newborn infants with IRDS.

We have studied the effects on lung volume, respiratory mechanics and ventilation during the first hours after instillation of 60 mg/kg of human surfactant into the trachea of 4 very preterm, newborn infants with severe IRDS under mechanical ventilation. Measurements were made with a "face-out" body plethysmograph and a modified nitrogen wash-out method. In addition to a transient decrease in total and alveolar ventilation immediately after the instillation we found an immediate rise in lung volume, but respiratory compliance decreased. These changes lasted less than two hours. Oxygen requirements fell in 3 out of 4 infants. The changes in lung volume and compliance are explained in terms of changes in the shape of the static recoil pressure characteristics of the diseased lungs after treatment. Mechanisms behind the short duration are sought in mode of instillation, dosage, age at treatment, and severity of disease.

A linkage group composed of three coat color genes and three serum protein loci in horses.

The equine coat color genes chestnut (e) and roan (Rn) have been tested for linkage to 15 protein and blood group loci. Data showing close or fairly close linkage to the serum albumin locus (Al) and loose linkage to the serum esterase locus (Es) for both e and Rn are presented. This means that three coat color genes (To, e and Rn) and three serum protein loci (Al, Gc, and Es) are linked in the same linkage group. The gene order can tentatively be written Al, Gc, Rn, To-e-Es. The implications of the results for studies on coat color inheritance in horses are discussed. The possibility of using electrophoretic markers when testing hypotheses of allelism between coat color genes is suggested. The linkage of e and Es in the horse is proposed to be homologous to the loose linkage of the extension locus (e) and a cluster of esterase loci on chromosome 8 in the mouse, and on linkage group IV in the rabbit. Designations for the known autosomal linkage groups in the horse are suggested.
