Anthropometric analysis of tricycle designs.

A comparison of the designs of two types of tricycles available in India for the use of persons with severe both-lower-limb disability was made from the viewpoint of the anthropometric characteristics of the users It was noted that neither design was compatible with the disabled persons' anthropometric dimensions in a number of ways. The seats did not provide for comfortable sitting. Although the hand crank was relatively well positioned in one, the distance of the crank from the back rest obliged the users to bend forward while driving their tricycles. The study concluded that suitable modifications in the dimensions of the tricycles are required to provide greater comfort, safety and ease of operation.

Metabolic energy demand and optimal walking speed in post-polio subjects with lower limb afflictions.

The metabolic demand, using the relationship between speed and energy cost, and the optimal speed of walking, estimated by means of speed and energy cost per unit distance travelled, were studied in 16 post-polio subjects with lower limb affliction and 20 normal subjects with sedentary habits. It was observed that the post-polio subjects consumed higher energy than the normal persons at each walking speed between 0.28 and 1.26 m/s. The optimal speed of walking in post-polio subjects was lower than that of the normal persons and was associated with a higher energy demand per unit distance travelled. It was deduced that the post-polio subjects. not having used any assistive devices for a long time, have acquired severe degrees of disability which not only hindered their normal gait but also demanded extra energy from them.

An improved approach for performance evaluation in lower extremity involvement.

An investigation has been carried out to confirm the relationship between heart rate and energy expenditure in case of normal and lower extremity handicapped persons and, to explore the difference, if any, between both the relationships. Studies have been made on 8 below-knee amputees fitted with patellar-tendon-bearing (PTB) prostheses and 10 normal subjects, taken as two separate groups and also, on 1 below-knee amputee and 1 control subject as individuals. It has been found that a significant difference exists between both the relationships and hence, separate heart rate-energy expenditure relationship is needed to evaluate the performance of lower extremity handicapped in clinics and in industry without going into the cumbersome, clumsy and time consuming methods of estimating physiological cost.

Performance evaluation of BK amputees through graded load carrying tests.

The ergonomic approach to performance evaluation in orthopaedic rehabilitation presents problems because of the cumbersome and time-consuming measurement and test procedures involved. This paper describes a method of performance evaluation through graded load carrying tests which makes it possible to set up regression equations which can be used in routine clinical practice for prediction of the performance of below-knee amputees.

Gait study in evaluation of results in intramedullary nailing for femoral shaft fractures.

The present preliminary investigation conducted on six adult males whose femur shaft fractures had been fixed internally by means of Hansen-Street intermedullary nails indicated that our gait study technic helps confirm the clinical findings in such cases. Five patients, although their fractures had united and they had resumed their usual activities, were not deemed quite normal as yet and the causes for their gait abnormality were identified in the clinical examination. The gait study technic thus provided fairly accurate quantitative support of the clinical findings.
