Gender differences and geographical differences in content from dreams elicited by a television announcement.

We studied 108 male and 110 female dreams that had been collected in response to a television announcement. We did not find a number of gender differences that had been previously reported. We found no difference between men's and women's dreams in the amount of aggression, friendliness, sexuality, male characters, weapons, or clothes. However, women's dreams still contained a higher number of family members, babies, children, and indoor settings than did men. We also looked at geographic differences, finding that while patterns of aggression did not distinguish men from women, they did distinguish residents of different areas. In dreams in which the dreamer was either the aggressor or victim, dreamers from the East coast were more likely to be the aggressor than those from the Midwest and West coast.

Adrenergic and serotonergic receptor responsiveness in depression.

Preliminary results are presented from a series of studies designed to characterize the regulation of release/metabolism and receptor responsiveness in the noradrenergic and serotonergic systems in acutely depressed patients and depressed patients in remission. Abnormal regulation of noradrenaline release/metabolism might be expected to be associated with the acute state of depression, while abnormalities of adrenoceptor responsiveness were hypothesized to persist in remission. Growth hormone responses to clonidine were measured as indices partially reflecting alpha 2-adrenoceptor responsiveness. Blunted responses to clonidine were found in both acutely depressed patients and patients in remission. The possible implications of these findings for the pathophysiology of the noradrenergic system in depression are discussed. Prolactin responses to the serotonergic agonist and serotonin-releasing agent fenfluramine were evaluated in acutely depressed patients, patients in remission and controls. A subset of the depressed patients appeared to have blunted prolactin responses to fenfluramine. However, very preliminary results do not show any difference in this response between patients who were acutely ill and those in remission, although the variability in both groups was great. These and related findings are discussed in terms of a possible contributory role of the serotonergic system in depression.

Acute morning glory syndrome: report of a case.

In 1976 a boy of 12 presented with unilateral morning glory syndrome connected with oedema of the posterior fundus and marked loss vision. The recovery was complete within a few months, with visual acuity improving to 6/4. The other eye could see 6/4 and had a normal fundus throughout.

Retinal complications of optic disc drusen.

Following reports by Sanders et al. and Wise et al. of optic disc drusen associated with retinal bleeding, an additional 19 cases were studied and followed up for 1 to 10 years (average 5 years). Four of them showed haemorrhages at the optic disc and its borders only, but 15 showed extensive retinopathy with macular involvement. In 3 cases retinopathy was serous and not haemorrhagic. Apart from cases in which bleeding was limited to the disc and its immediate vicinity the main clinical features of the syndrome were as follows: (1) the presence of optic disc drusen; (2) extensive retinal haemorrhage; (3) intraretinal extravasation of serum with or without the presence of blood; (4) elevated mounds lifting the retina and causing striae radiating from the mounds towards the macula and beyond; (5) pigmentary disturbance of the macula or a wider area of papillo-macular bundle after the resolution of acute stages which, while often clinically severe, is compatible with recovery of normal or near normal vision. It is proposed that the syndrome be designated the 'optic disc drusen retinopathy.'

Posterior hyperplastic primary vitreous.

A fundus picture of posterior hyperplastic primary vitreous based on a study of 14 cases is described. Its definition, in spite of pleomorphic manifestations, could be useful for its differentiation from other conditions affecting children's eyes and presumed to be caused by parasitic, inflammatory, fibroplastic, or genetically transmitted processes.

Renal graft evaluation with pertechnetate and I-131 Hippuran. A comparative clinical study.

This retrospective study compared standard clinical and biochemical data from 50 graft recipients against 533 I-131 Hippuran sequential scintigrams and 515 [99mTc]pertechnetate serial scintigrams. All grafts included in this study are cadaver kidneys. The majority of the studies were made during the early posttransplantation period. Anuria or oliguria of at least 4 days duration was seen in 18 patients. The study spans 574 days of oliguria during which 136 dual-tracer studies were made. I-131 Hippuran renography of functioning grafts was carried out 397 times, and the Tc-99m sequential scintigraphy 379 times. In all, 47 espisodes of actue rejection were registered clinically in functioning gfafrs, 36 of which were recognized during Hippuran renography and 38 with the pertechnetate study. False-positive errors were seen 12 times during renography. The study also demonstrated that furosemide will significantly and predictably influence renography and the pertechnetate study. This seems noteworthy since furosemide is extensively used in posttransplant management.

Complications of optic disc pits.

Sixteen cases of optic disc pits have been examined during the past eight years at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital. All but one had visual loss because of macular involvement, ranging from shallow serous detachment to macular hole. The pit was found to be only a part of the optic disc abnormalities and its direct role as a channel for accumulating retinal and subretinal extracellular fluid is being questioned.
