pTR2030 is a conjugative plasmid which encodes resistance to bacteriophage in lactococci by a mechanism that aborts the phage infection (Hsp+). Subcloning and in vivo deletion events showed that two independent mechanisms of resistance are located on a 13.6-kilobase Bg/II fragment cloned in pSA3; one mechanism is responsible for the abortive infection, and the other incodes a restriction modification system. The introduction of pTR2030 or the recombinant plasmid pTK6 resulted in the loss of a resident restriction modification plasmid in Lactococcus lactis NCK202 which was not previously identified.
A plasmid, termed pTacGST2, which contains the complete coding sequence of a GST2 (glutathione S-transferase 2) subunit and permits the expression of the protein in Escherichia coli was constructed. The expressed protein had the same subunit Mr as the enzyme from normal human liver and retained its catalytic function with both GST and glutathione peroxidase activity. Antiserum raised against the bacterially synthesized protein cross-reacted with all the basic GST isoenzymes in human liver. The electrophoretic mobility in agarose of the bacterially expressed isoenzyme suggested that its pI is identical with that of the cationic isoenzyme from human liver previously termed GST2 type 1. The available evidence suggests that the three common cationic isoenzymes found in human liver are the products of two very similar gene loci.
Young (age 25 to 39 years, n = 50) and old (age 65 to 79 years, n = 50) women were administered both subjective and objective measures of imagery ability and imagery control. Little evidence of an age-related deficit in image vividness was observed. It would appear that imaginal ability does not vary with age. Alternatively, self-reports of images may not be accurate representations of images experienced.
Organisms typical of those seen in Tyzzer's disease of muskrats (Ondatra zibethica) were found in tissue sections from two muskrats found dead in Iowa in 1947 by Paul Errington. These findings support further the hypothesis that Errington's and Tyzzer's diseases of muskrats are a single entity.

PURPOSE: To review literature specific to the use of AAC with adults who have severe aphasia. METHOD: The authors reviewed studies involving AAC interventions for adults with severe aphasia. RESULTS: Published data support the use of aided and unaided AAC with adults with severe aphasia in controlled treatment contexts. Reported gains in communication typically have not generalized to everyday settings. CONCLUSIONS: The application of AAC with persons with severe aphasia must address factors potentially limiting treatment success outside of training environments.
Expressed sequence tags (ESTs) provide a rapid and reliable method for gene discovery as well as a resource for the large-scale analysis of gene expression of known and unknown genes. Here we describe a normalized cDNA library developed from a 10-day-old White Leghorn chicken whole embryo. The utility of the library was evaluated by partial sequencing of 99 randomly selected insert-containing clones and the analysis of EST-targeted genomic regions for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the East Lansing chicken reference DNA mapping panel. Using stringent match criteria of percent identity of 80 or higher across a length of 50 or more bases, 46 ESTs matched database sequences including previously reported Gallus gallus genes. Thirty-seven of the 50 primer pairs developed from 50 unique ESTs amplified a single fragment. The size of the 37 amplicons ranged from 276 to 693 bp for a total of 17,508 and an average of 473. About 70% of the SNPs detected were either G-->A or C-->T transition. The number of SNPs detected within the amplicons from EST-targeted genomic regions ranged from 0 to 4 for a total of 65 and a frequency of about 1 every 470 bases. About 35% of the amplicons contained only 1 SNP, while 19% had 4 SNPs. Using the SNPs that were informative in the East Lansing reference panel, 17 ESTs were mapped on the East Lansing chicken genetic map. The ESTs described, as well as the nucleotide variants identified within the EST-targeted genomic regions, represent significant resources for genome analysis in the chicken.
