Myocardial metabolism, blood flow distribution within the heart, and coronary and systemic circulations were observed during halothane anesthesia using 15 mongrel dogs. Pao2 and Paco2 were maintained near 100 and 40 torr respectively throughout the study. As arterial halothane content increased, most parameters of systemic circulation were depressed significantly. Coronary blood flow was reduced in parallel with myocardial oxygen consumption (MVo2) (r=+0.89, pless than0.001). Myocardial contractility decreased significantly as anesthesia deepened. MVo2 and myocardial CO2 production were reduced as arterial halothane concentration rose. Arterial-coronary venous difference in blood oxygen content remained unchanged even in deep stage. Lactate and pyruvate were continuously taken up by the myocardium, although the amounts of uptake were reduced as anesthesia progressed. Calculated excess lactate and redox potential did not show any signs of myocardial hypoxia even in deep halothane anesthesia. Among major hemodynamic parameters, left ventricular dp/dt max showed the closest correlation with MVo2. Microsphere injection method was used to observe blood flow distribution within the heart. Halothane did not influence the distribution significantly and I/O ratio of the left ventricular free wall remained near 1.0 during the study.

The mode of melanosome transfer from melanocytes to keratinocytes in epidermal cell cultures has been examined with time-lapse cinematography and electron microscopy. A tip of a melanocyte dendrite containing melanosomes became enfolded by a recipient keratinocyte. It was then pinched off to form a cluster of melanosomes which initially seemed to be surrounded by two layers of membranes. The phagocytized dendrite was gradually decomposed and became an aggregate of melanosomes surrounded by a single membrane of the keratinocyte. The individual melanosomes were dispersed from the aggregate into the keratinocyte cytoplasm, depending on the size of melanosomes. The larger ones were single and smaller ones were complex. The mechanism of melanosome transfer in vitro is a type of cytophagocytosis. The entire process consists of two steps: the first is a cytophagic process and the second a melanosome dispersion process. The process is influenced by various exogenous factors.

The relationship between the electron microscopical structures and the immunofluorescent appearance of HB antigen found in the hepatocytes of patients with HB antigenemia was carefully studied, with the purpose to clarify the nature of those structures. The nuclei of hepatocytes, containing numerous virus-like particles, showed positive immunoflourescence by antiserum against the core of Dane particles. The areas in which filamentous structures were observed in the cisternae of endoplasmic reticulums and hyaloplasma, corresponded to orcein or aldehyde-fuchsin positive substances in the light microscope, whereas direct relationship between filamentous structures and HBs antigen was still obscure. Accordingly, it may be concluded that virus-like particles in the nucleus correpond to core and filamentous structures in the cytoplasma correlate with coat protein of hepatitis B virus.
The authors discuss Ryodoraku electric acupuncture therapy in detail in Part I. The results of the treatment of migraine headache (20 cases) by Ryodoraku therapy were investigated in part II. In the present study 15 out of 20 patients achieved good to excellent responses to this type of therapy.
