The supernatant of phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated lymphocyte culture derived from pregnant women in the first two trimesters inhibited DNA synthesis of normal human lymphocytes after PHA induction. This soluble factor was heat-labile and the same factor could not be found in the supernatant generated from lymphocytes of pregnant women in 3rd trimester as well as from those of the non-pregnant. In contrast, the heatstable factor in the supernatant generated from lymphocytes of non-pregnant women in all trimesters contained an stimulating factor on the DNA synthesis of normal human lymphocytes after PHA induction. An endogenous alternation in lymphocyte competence or an alternation in subpopulation of lymphocytes was suggested at the early stage of pregnancy.

Acute spinal epidural abscess is found to be relatively rare and may be getting rarer since antibiotics have been widely used. An early diagnosis and prompt surgical treatment are still important to prevent severe neurological deficit such as paraplegia. A characteristic case is presented. Eighteen years old boy showed acute progression of paraplegia and rectourinary difficulty with complete spinal block at T 6-7 intervertebral space on myelography, who had suffered from multiple infectious lacerations on his face and hands two months previously. There was complete recovery of neurological signs following removal of epidural abscess with granulation tissue and spinal decompression by lamineotomy through T 5-7, and supplimentary antibiotic therapy for the organism (Staphylococcus aureus). To our knowlodge, this will be the first case report in this country, which has been obtained successful recovery after surgical treatment in such an acute case.

Mallory bodies (MBs) were isolated from the livers of eight alcoholic patients. The method consisted of homogenization, velocity sedimentation in 60 per cent sucrose solution and two-phase polymer centrifugation using a polyethylene glycol-dextran system. MBs were isolated in large quantity and high purity (more than 95 per cent in some cases). Isolated MBs maintained the characteristic filamentous structures. They were solubilized in 6 M guanidine hydrochloride in 10 per cent or 1 per cent acetic acid by sonication or in 1 per cent sodium dodecyl sulfate with 5 per cent 2-mercaptoethanol and 8 M urea. The solubilized MB protein produced three peaks on Sephadex G-100 chromatography and at least five intense protein bands on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The fractions from control livers contained several bands which were identical with the major components of isolated MB protein. These findings suggest that MBs are not homogeneous protein, but that they are probably complexes of various proteins, and that some components of MBs are present in normal hepatocytes. The exact nature of MBs has yet to be established.
