We have determined the nucleotide sequence of the cell binding domain region of the chicken fibronectin gene and analyzed it evolutionaly. We present here the complete nucleotide sequence of 4.3 kb HindIII/EcoRI segment from the clone lambda FC23 of the chicken fibronectin gene. There were five exons in this segment. When we lined up the amino acid of exons 28, 29 and 31, three alignments, known as the Type III repeat, appeared. Tetrapeptide, -RGDS-, called the cell binding domain, existed in the second repeat, coding exon 30. It was presumed that the Type III repeats were composed of two exons in the chicken gene, the same as in the rat and humans. We found repeatedly appearing amino-acid sequences such as -TIT- (three arrays in these Type III repeats) but also found one of the amino acids substituted in the tripeptide in these Type III repeats (seven arrays). We analyzed these repeats from the point of view of evolution. We used three of the nucleotide sequences (12-18 bp) coding such -TIT- repeats as a unit length for comparing the various homologies after dividing the coding region into 56 segments. The mutual homology of the divided segments to each one of three showed 53% on average. On the other hand, the mutual nucleotide homology of the Type III repeat was 44%. This suggested that the Type III repeat may have been developed by frequent duplication of small gene units.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy for 232 cases of gastric cancer by a co-operative study group consisting of 21 hospitals. The present paper describes the side effects and the 2-year survival rates in patients. Side effects observed during long-term treatment with Futraful or UFT were considered to be minor, although incidence of toxicity in the UFT group was slightly higher than in the Futraful group. As for 2-year survival, elevated survival was found in stage III cases of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. This suggested that UFT is more useful than Futraful.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity at the synapses of presynaptic boutons on presumed alpha-motoneurons in the chicken ventral horn was studied histochemically at the light- and electron-microscope levels. At the light-microscope level, many dot-like AChE-active sites were observed on the soma and dendrites of presumed alpha-motoneurons. On electron microscopy, reaction products for AChE activity were observed mainly in the synaptic clefts of the four kinds of presynaptic boutons: (1) S type boutons, (2) boutons containing small, spherical, dense cored vesicles (diameter range, 60-105 nm) and spherical, clear vesicles, (3) boutons containing medium-sized, spherical, dense cored vesicles (65-115 nm) and spherical, clear vesicles, and (4) boutons containing large, spherical, dense cored vesicles (80-130 nm) and spherical, clear vesicles. In the light of previous physiological and biochemical studies, the present results suggest the possibility that each of these presynaptic boutons which are AChE-active in their synaptic clefts may contain acetylcholine, substance P, or enkephalins which acts as a neurotransmitter or modulator.
A rare case of embryonal carcinoma of the testis associated with familial adenomatosis coli is reported. The patient may serve as a case to support the hypothesis that familial adenomatosis coli is a systemic or generalized disease with tumorigenicity that is not restricted to the colon and rectum, and that a total colectomy with ileostomy is not always entirely curative.
We treated two patients with familial polyposis coli (FPC) who were found to have multiple adenomas in the ileostomy stoma, five and seven years after colectomy, respectively. These adenomas were dense and 3 to 10 mm in diameter. The adjacent ileal mucosa showed a colonic metaplasia. Ileal adenomas detected using intraoperative intestinal endoscopy at the time of colectomy were less than 2 mm in diameter and sparse in density. These findings suggest that ileal adenomas occurring after colectomy for FPC tend to increase in size and number and to resemble colonic adenomas.
The reported clinical manifestations of Turcot syndrome were studied to determine whether these corresponded to those of Turcot's original cases. Among the patients with well-documented colonic lesions, the colonic lesions were classified into three groups. First, there was a main group in which colonic lesions had the following characteristics that coincided with those of Turcot's original cases: a low number of polyps (20-100), large polyps over 3 cm in diameter, and complication by colonic cancer during the second or third decades. In the second group, the patients had too few polyps to be diagnosed as polyposis. The third group included patients with numerous colonic polyps similar to those of familial polyposis coli. The recognition of these characteristics of colonic lesions may lead to early detection of glioma in the asymptomatic period.

A case of the lesser curve necrosis following selective proximal vagotomy for a perforated duodenal ulcer is reported. Although little is known of this very rare complication, it is potentially a fatal complication after selective proximal vagotomy. Early recognition and immediate reoperation must be save the life of the patient when this complication is suspected.
A case of glomus tumor of the stomach and a brief review of the literature are reported. As the neoplasm may be benign, extensive surgery should be avoided in the absence of a precise diagnosis.
A rare case of cystic lymphangioma of the colon is reported. The lobulated and fluctuant lesion was located in the splenic flexure and was associated with multiple adenomas in the entire colon. Well differentiated adenocarcinomas restricted to the mucosal layer were also demonstrated in two of the adenomas of the colon. Clinical features, appropriate treatment, and possible pathogenesis of colonic lymphangioma are discussed.
The synaptology of alpha-motoneurons innervating the anterior and posterior latissimus dorsi muscle (ALD and PLD) in the chicken was studied electron microscopically. These motoneurons were identified by means of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase injected into each muscle. Presynaptic boutons on their somata and dendrites were classified as S, F, C and M types, fundamentally similar to those previously reported in the monkey, cat and rat. Besides them, the presynaptic terminals which contained dense-cored vesicles, designated as the G type collectively for practical purposes, were newly found on both the somata and dendrites of chicken alpha-motoneurons and divided into five subtypes characterized by the presence of: (1) elongated-cored vesicles and flattened clear vesicles; (2) small spherical-cored vesicles (the range of diameter, 55-100 nm) and spherical clear vesicles; (3) middle-sized spherical-cored vesicles (60-120 nm) concomitant with spherical clear vesicles; (4) large spherical cored vesicles (85-145 nm) with a few spherical clear vesicles; and (5) cored vesicles of various shapes and sizes intermingled with tubular structures with dense content in them. The frequent occurrence of the G-type boutons on alpha-motoneurons in the chickens as compared with the rat, cat or monkey may suggest that the somatic motor activity in the chicken is modulated by neuropeptides and/or biogenic amines more than in the mammals.
A case is reported of a 33-year-old man with hepatocellular carcinoma associated with familial polyposis of the colon. During subtotal colectomy for diffuse colonic polyposis, a small tumor was excised from the right lobe of the liver. Histologic examination revealed hepatocellular carcinoma. The association of primary hepatoma in familial polyposis of the colon is very rare. However, it is well known that familial polyposis of the colon has a potent oncogenicity not only in the colon but also in the extracolonic organs. The hepatoma may also be one of the extracolonic malignant manifestations in this inherited disease.
