A new structural protein was purified from a prolonged 0.6 M KI extract of residues of chicken skeletal myofibrils, from which myosin, actin, and some other proteins had been removed. The protein had a chain weight of 55,000. The indirect immunofluorescence technique using antiserum against the 55,000 dalton protein revealed that the protein was exclusively located in the Z lines of a myofibril. The new protein formed lattice structures in vitro which were similar to those observed in the Z lines in situ.

We wished to develop a simple model for morphological studies on the interaction between the corneal endothelium and specifically sensitized lymphocytes. Rabbits were transplanted with orthotopic allogeneic skin or corneal grafts. After the onset of the transplantation reaction, lymphoid cells from the recipient's spleen or preauricular lymph nodes were harvested and placed on the endothelial surfaces of the donor and recipient corneas which were incubated in tissue culture medium at 37 degree C for 4 hours before being examined by vital staining or scanning electron microscopy. Compared to the recipient, the donor endothelium contained more lymphoid cell aggregates and more corneal cells were damaged. The in vitro model seemed suitable for studying the cytotoxic behaviour of sensitized lymphocytes confronting the corneal endothelium.

Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography using a very thin needle has been performed in 885 patients with a variety of underlying hepatic, biliary, and pancreatic disorders. The procedure was successful in 99% of the patients with dilated intrahepatic bile ducts and in 85% of those with non-dilated ducts. Complications which required surgical intervention occurred only in two cases (0.2%). In patients with obstructive jaundice, external bile drainage was performed immediately after visualization of the bile duct. Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography is an extremely useful and safe method for investigating disorders of the biliary tract, for localizing the cause of obstructive jaundice, and for reducing the degree of jaundice and improving the general status of patients with obstructive jaundice.
The value of flow birefringence of F-actin was greatly decreased by filamin due to precipitate formation. This precipitate could be dispersed into birefringent filaments by sonication. Tropomyosin inhibited precipitation of F-actin induced by filamin, and no decrease in birefringence occurred when filamin was added to tropomyosin-bound F-actin. Hence it appears that filamin acts on F-actin in non-muscle cells similarly to alpha-actinin.
At gastroscopy of 656 patients, complete gastric erosions were found in 58 (11%). Radiography performed in 46 of these demonstrated erosions in 21 of 33 with a time span less than one month between radiography and gastroscopy but in only 4 of 13 with a time span of one to 3 months. Double contrast technique supplemented with films of compressed barium-filled antrum demonstrate the lesions best. Complete erosions have often appearances simulating gastric polyps or large mucosal folds and are often found together with ulcers.
We used radio-labelled microspheres to study the distribution of blood flow in different regions of rabbit eyes with inflamed corneas resulting from trauma or allograft reaction. The blood flow in the cornea, the anterior uvea and the regional lymph nodes draining it was increased, but total flow in the eye did not increase. More blood went to the anterior uvea at the expense of the rest of the eye. Blood flow at the limbus was higher in the inflamed corneas than in the controls.
Having shown that complement independent cellular cytotoxicity (CICC) plays a part in destroying the donor cell we wished to see if serum antibody cytotoxicity (SAC), complement dependent cellular cytotoxicity (CDCC) or K-cell mediated cellular cytotoxicity (KCC) might not also be involved in the rejection of corneal grafts. Rabbits were grafted with allo- and xenogreneic corneas. At various times, lymphoid cells and sera were collected from a recipient and a control animal. The donor's corneal cells and those of the control animal were cultivated in vitro, and then labelled with 51chromium. The recipient and control lymphoid cells and sera and/or complement were mixed with the labelled cells. A 51chromium release assay was done after incubation. The test was negative for SAC, CDCC, and KCC and we feel that they have no major part in the rejection of corneal grafts.
