[Investigation into the actual condition of patients with occlusal disharmony at the Pedodontic Clinic of Kyushu University. Cases of anterior cross-bite in the deciduous dentition].

The total number of subjects was 2754 children (1354 boys and 1402 girls), who visited the Pedodontic Clinic of Kyushu University during the 5 year period from April 1st 1981 to March 31st 1986. We investigated the actual conditions of patients who complained of occlusal disharmony and who were ascertained to be associated with occlusal disharmony. The results were as follows: 1. The percentage ratio of patients with chief complaints concerning occlusions was 14.5% and the percentage of patients with various type of complaints as well as the problem of occlusion was 8.1%. The ratio of the sex of the patients who complained of their occlusal disharmony was 43.0% for boys and 57.0% for girls. 2. The age distributions of the patients who had as the chief complaint occlusal disharmony were at the ages of 3 and 6 to 7 at the maximum. 3. The number of patients who were diagnosed with occlusal disharmony at the first examination was 28.5%. These included anterior cross-bite 32.5%, edge to edge bite 14.1%, cross-bite 13.0%, crowding 11.8% and et al. 4. The distribution of anterior cross-bites due to the developmental stage was divided into the deciduous dentition 59.9%, the mixed dentition 39.3% and the permanent dentition 0.8%. 5. The sex ratios of anterior cross-bites in the deciduous dentition were 45.6% for boys and 54.4% for girls. 6. The treatment of occlusal guidance for anterior cross-bite in the deciduous dentition started from ages 3 to 5. 7. The appliances used for the treatment of anterior cross-bite in the deciduous dentition were maxillary protraction 25.0%, the chin cap 20.0%, the FKO 17.5%, and the lingual arch with herical springs 15.0% and et al. 8. The status of the patients with the anterior cross-bite in the deciduous dentition as of August 1986 was that the 36.2% was under the observation, and 24.4% was under the treatment of occlusal guidance or under the observation after the treatment was done.

[Treatment of acute lymphocytic leukemia in adult].

Since April, 1978 to October, 1988, 66 acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) patients aged 15 to 79 (21 L1, 43 L2, 2 L3/6 Ph1+) were treated with 3 different therapeutic protocols. The drugs used for induction were VCR (VDS) + Pred, followed by DNR + VCR (VDS) + 6MP + Pred and VCR (VDS) + L-asp + Pred in protocol I, Ad + VCR + Pred in protocol II and DNR + VCR + Pred in protocol III. Complete remission (CR) was attained in 72.7% of 66 patients. The CR rate of each group as followings; 71.4% in protocol I and 75.0% in protocol II and III, respectively. The median duration of remission was 10.2 months + and the probability of being in continuous CR at 3 years was 21.9%. For the 48 patients in remission the median survival was 17.8 months and the probability of being alive at 3 years was 24.3%. The intensified induction and consolidation therapy is expected in the cure oriented treatment of adult ALL.

Biorhythm of core temperature in depressive and non-depressive alcoholics.

Core temperature was longitudinally evaluated during the day- and nighttime in six non-depressive and in four depressive alcoholics who had been abstaining from alcoholic beverages. The least squares spectrum method was employed for detecting the periods and acrophase of the circadian rhythm of core temperature. Although normal periods were observed in all the patients throughout the study, an abnormal acrophase was found in many patients, especially in depressive alcoholics. On the 3rd and 4th days after alcohol withdrawal, all of the four depressive alcoholics showed a phase advance of the circadian rhythm, and three patients of the six non-depressive alcoholics exhibited an abnormal acrophase. On the 21st and 22nd days after alcohol withdrawal, a normal acrophase was observed in two patients of the four depressives and in four of the six non-depressives. The mean core temperature was higher in the depressives than in the non-depressives on the third and fourth days after alcohol withdrawal.

[Clinical effects of K-18 (IgG-melphalan) in hypoplastic leukemia: a case report].

Five cases of hypoplastic acute myelocytic leukemia were treated with an IgG-melphalan conjugate, K-18. Eight tablets of K-18, containing 30 mg per tablet, were given daily. One patient, a 68-year-old female, obtained complete remission with a duration of 1.5 + months. Among the four remaining patients without remission, one showed a decrease in leukemic cells in the peripheral blood. No side effects of K-18 were observed except in one patient, showing a slight increase in serum GOT and GPT levels. Further studies with a large group will be necessary to clarify the effect of this drug on hypoplastic leukemia.

Genetic and environmental factors in the longitudinal growth of rats: I. Body weight and overall craniofacial size.

By means of roentgenographic cephalometry and quantitative genetic analysis, the relative contribution of the genetic and environmental components to total variance of body weight and overall craniofacial size was shown to vary with age. The genetic component of variance significantly increased until 80 days of age. Inversely, the maternal component of variance showed a high value during the early stage of postnatal growth and gradually decreased thereafter to a very small amount by day 80. Thus it appeared that the genetic effect became larger with age of the rat and the maternal effects diminished. The environmental component of variance did not change much over the course of the experiment. We thus conclude that genetic effect contributed the change of ontogenetic variation of craniofacial complex through all experimental periods and that maternal effect contributed to it at early growth stage of the craniofacial complex.

Genetic and environmental factors in the longitudinal growth of rats: II. Ventrodorsal craniofacial size.

By means of roentgenographic cephalometry and quantitative genetic analysis, the relative contribution of the genetic and environmental components to the ontogenic change of the ventrodorsal view of the craniofacial complex was shown to vary with age. The genetic component of variance significantly increased until the 80th day. Inversely, the maternal component of variance showed a large value during the early stage of postnatal growth and gradually decreased thereafter to a very small amount by the 80th day. In general, it appeared that the genetic effect became larger with the age of the rat and the maternal effects tended to diminish. The environmental component of variance did not change much over the course of the experiment. We thus concluded that the genetic effect contributed to the change of the ontogenic variation of the craniofacial complex through all experimental periods and the maternal effect contributed to the change at the early growth stage of the craniofacial complex.

Genetic and environmental factors in the longitudinal growth of rats: III. Craniofacial shape change.

This investigation expresses the similarity of the craniofacial shape of rats in terms of a single parameter and determines to what extent the shape variation of the craniofacial complex is genetically determined. To quantify the similarity of the craniofacial shape between any two individuals, diagrams plotted from their lateral cephalograms are so oriented that the distance from the points on the one to the corresponding points on the other is minimized. The data consist of measurements from within-strain, between-strain, maternal half-sibs and paternal half-sibs groups. The average dissimilarity is computed in each group and compared. The results indicate that this method can be used to estimate the similarity of the craniofacial shape. The dissimilarity of within-strain pairs shows the smallest Dh value, whereas between-strain pairs have the largest Dh value. Those of maternal and paternal half-sib pairs show the intermediate Dh value. The value of dissimilarity for these four pairs tends to decrease gradually with age and a considerable genetic effect acts on the change of the craniofacial shape during growth, while the maternal effect does not act significantly on the change of the craniofacial shape during growth.

Correlation between month of menarche and month of birth.

The month of menarche and month of birth were studied in 47,218 women who were born during a period of 90 years between 1881 and 1970. Among those born prior to 1960, there was a tendency for menarche to occur more frequently at the month of birth. This coincidence was not, however, found among those born after 1960.

Twinning in New England in the 17th-19th centuries.

Vital records of Saybrook and Plymouth in New England from the 17th century were investigated. Among 8,562 maternities 81 twin maternities were found, the twinning rate being 0.95%. Twinning rate was low at the 1st and 2nd births as compared with the 3rd or later births, and was highest at the 7th and 8th births (1.6%). Twin maternity seemed to be a strong risk factor to terminate reproduction, particularly after 6 or more children had been delivered. The rate of mothers who had any other child ("fertile" mothers) at the 7th or later birth order was significantly lower for twin (13%) than for singleton maternities (63%). Twinning rate also varied by the size of offspring of a mother, and those mothers who had 5 or 6 children showed the highest twinning rate (1.3%). Those fertile mothers who had 7 or more children showed the lowest twinning rate (0.74%), although an exceptionally higher twinning rate was seen at their last births. Elongation of the last birth interval was observed for each group of every family size, and higher twinning rates were generally observed at their last births. Reduction in fecundity and rise in twinning rate seem to have occurred simultaneously at the last stage of the reproductive period of mothers, regardless of their family size.

Incidence of twinning in London from 1581 to 1760.

Baptism records of parishes in London and its vicinities from 1581 to 1760 (168,238 maternities) were investigated to estimate the twinning rate and its secular and seasonal variations. Total, estimated dizygotic (DZ), and estimated monozygotic (MZ) twinning rates were 1.1%, 0.8% and 0.3%, respectively. MZ twinning rate varied during the 18 decades, with a significantly low rate (0.11%) in the early 17th century (1621-1640). Significant seasonal variations of the twinning rate according to the month of baptism was observed in both DZ and MZ twins. DZ twins were born more frequently in spring and fall in general. Parish records obtained from four parishes near Manchester in England showed an inversed seasonal variation with peaks in winter and summer. An interpretation of this difference was discussed in a context of environmental factors. In the low MZ period, 1621-1640, MZ or like-sexed twins were apparently less frequent in summer (April to October). This result could be explained by a decrease of MZ twins and/or a greater loss of like-sexed DZ twins.

Alternate changes in birth seasonality of twins during 1971-1984 in Japan.

Birth dates of 1,536 twin-pairs in 1971-1984 were collected from the members of an association of twins' mothers. The seasonal variation of twinning changed every 2-4 years. Years when twinning rate was higher in the summer-fall season (1971-72, 1976-77, 1982-84) and those when a peak of the rate was not observed (1973-75, 1978-81) appeared alternately. In years with a summer-fall peak, the elevation of twinning in the summer-fall season was detected consistently in both like- and unlike-sexed and in both MZ and DZ twin groups. The twinning seasonality in these years, however, was not evident in twin births of mothers who were born in May-July. These results suggest the possibility that seasonal factors which influence the twinning rate be not multiple-ovulation-inducing but probably abortion-inducing factors and most likely seasonally epidemic microbes.

Effects of medroxyprogesterone acetate on sleep of healthy young male adults.

The effects of a single 100 mg dose of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) on human sleep were investigated using healthy young male adults. After a baseline night recording, two consecutive MPA nights and the following two withdrawal nights were recorded. The total sleep time was reduced after the 2nd MPA night and the decrease was significant on the 1st withdrawal night. The time of intrasleep awakening increased after the 2nd MPA night. Stage 1 sleep increased significantly on the 2nd MPA and 1st withdrawal nights. Stage 4 sleep decreased and the sleep latency gradually increased after the MPA administration. REM sleep reduced slightly on the 1st withdrawal night. These results indicate that MPA has a mild arousal action on human sleep and that the action may be pronounced a few days after administration of MPA.
