Nickel-induced histopathological alterations in the gill architecture of a tropical freshwater perch, Colisa fasciatus (Bloch & Schn.).

The effect of a sub-lethal concentration of 64 ppm (2.279 x 10(-4) mol l-1) of nickel sulphate (NiSO4.7H2O) on the gill of a freshwater tropical perch, Colisa fasciatus, was investigated after 96 h exposure. Prominent changes noticed were: hypertrophy of respiratory and mucous cells; separation of the epithelial layer from the pillar cell system; cauterization and sloughing; extensive necrosis of the epithelium; and hyperplasia leading to clubbing at the tip of the lamellae.

Hexavalent chromium: toxicity and its impact on certain aspects of carbohydrate metabolism of the freshwater teleost, Colisa fasciatus.

The effect of hexavalent chromium on the static bioassay was examined. The LC0, LC50 and LC100 values at 24, 48, 72 and 96 h were determined. At 96 h, the LC50 value was found to be 60 mg l-1 or 6.000 x 10(-4) mol l-1. The impact of a sublethal concentration of 48 ppm on the liver glycogen and blood glucose levels was investigated during 3-96 h. Liver glycogen exhibited significant depletion with all exposure periods except 3 h. Blood glucose level increased significantly from 6 h onwards, attaining its peak value at 72 h.

Nephrotoxicity of continuous intravenous infusion of recombinant interleukin-2.

Adoptive immunotherapy with recombinant interleukin-2 has been complicated by significant nephrotoxicity of uncertain etiology. Creatinine clearance, effective renal plasma flow, plasma renin activity, aldosterone levels, and urinary prostaglandin excretion were evaluated in a 62-year-old man receiving continuous infusion recombinant interleukin-2. There was a marked decrease in the creatinine clearance and renal plasma flow, accompanied by an elevation in plasma renin activity and aldosterone level. Prostaglandin excretion also decreased, implying a direct effect on renal prostaglandin synthesis. The decrease in renal prostaglandin synthesis at a time of increased plasma renin activity may explain the reduction in renal function seen with recombinant interleukin-2 therapy.

Studies of the primary structure of the capsular polysaccharide from Klebsiella serotype K15.

The capsular polysaccharide of Klebsiella serotype K15 has been investigated mainly by methylation analysis, characterisation of the oligosaccharides obtained by partial acid hydrolysis, periodate oxidation, enzymic degradation, and 1H- and 13C-n.m.r. spectroscopy, and shown to have the hexasaccharide repeating-unit 1. The glycan does not contain any pyruvic acetal or O-acetyl substituents. (formula; see text)

Haemodynamic and endocrine responses of the kidney to frusemide in mild essential hypertension.

Prostaglandin-dependent, frusemide-induced changes in renal plasma flow, glomerular filtration rate and plasma renin activity were measured in 14 patients with mild essential hypertension. The renal haemodynamic responses to frusemide were the same as in 10 normal subjects. Frusemide-induced changes in urinary PGE and kallikrein excretion were also the same as in normal subjects. Impaired renal release of vasodilator prostaglandins in essential hypertension is likely to be secondary to the hypertension rather than an underlying factor in its development.

Left ventricular function and the distribution of pulmonary and total blood volume in hypertensive and normotensive man.

Using radionuclide methods the relationship between total and central blood volume and left ventricular function was studied in 12 patients with untreated essential hypertension and contrasted with the findings in eight normotensive subjects. The principal findings were of an increased stroke volume and end-diastolic volume with an increase in the ratio of pulmonary to total blood volume in the hypertensive patients. Left ventricular ejection fraction was similar in both groups but end-systolic volume was increased presumably in response to the increased afterload of the ventricle. The increased pulmonary blood volume may be secondary to altered left ventricular mechanics and not a primary determinant of cardiac function.

Restriction analysis of DNA from Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis.

When purified DNA from pathogenic Treponema pallidum is digested with restriction endonucleases it results in the formation of discrete DNA fragments which range between 2.5 to 10 Kilobase pairs. No such precise fragmentation occurs with DNA isolated from nonpathogenic T. pallidum. The appearance of the discrete restriction fragments from the pathogenic T. pallidum DNA does not represent a contamination of satellite DNA from rabbit, the host in which the organism was propagated, but rather represents the presence of redundant DNA or DNA of less complexity in the pathogenic T. pallidum DNA preparation.
