The concentration of latamoxef sodium (LMOX) in serum and prostatic tissue was evaluated. Thirty seven patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy were given 1 g LMOX intravenously prior to prostatectomy. Prostatic tissue and blood were sampled at 1, 2 or 3 hrs after administration of LMOX. The concentration of LMOX in prostatic tissue was 17.4 +/- 3.4 micrograms/g tissue, 11.1 +/- 1.3 microgram/g tissue and 8.9 +/- 1.3 microgram/g tissue 1, 2 and 3 hrs after injection, respectively (mean +/- S.E.). The penetration ratio of LMOX (concentration in tissue/in serum) to prostate was 30-45%. Therefore, the 80% MIC of LMOX is lower than 8 micrograms/ml for most gram negative bacteria, the results suggest that LMOX is very effective against prostatitis caused by these organisms.
A 46-year-old man had a general health check including an upper gastrointestinal series, gastric endoscopy and biopsy. He was diagnosed as advanced gastric cancer and hospitalized for surgery. Preoperative abdominal CT scan examination was performed, and a mass was incidentally detected in the left kidney. Further examination, ultrasound survey and selective renal angiography, confirmed a renal cancer. The patient had had no macroscopic or microscopic hematuria. Gastric resection with lymph node dissection and left nephrectomy were performed and then both cancers were radically removed. Pathologically, gastric cancer was poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and renal cancer was carcinoma of the clear cell type.
Natural killer (NK) cell activity against 4 different sublines of a permanent cell line KU-2 derived from human renal cell carcinoma were measured by 51Cr-release assay and single cell binding assay. KU-2 and its sublines exhibited different susceptibilities of interferon (IFN)-augmented NK cell cytotoxicity. Moreover, 2 out of 4 sublines changed in susceptibility to NK cell cytotoxicity in a few months. Along with the direct assay for NK cell activity, frequency and kinetics of NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity against 3 sublines were studied by single cell binding assay where spontaneous killing of target cells was directly visualized by the reading of trypan blue uptake into target cells among effector-target cell conjugates. The frequency of killer cells among conjugates was dependent on the susceptibility of the sublines to the IFN-augmented NK cell cytotoxicity. These results suggested the following: KU-2 cell line was not homogeneous but composed of a heterogeneous population of cells and even in one subline derived from a clone, the cells with different susceptibilities to NK cell-mediated cytotoxicity developed spontaneously in ordinary culture conditions with the passage of a certain period of time.

Renal preservation and cure of bilateral occurrence of renal tumors or stones as well as occurrence in solitary kidney put all urologists on the thorns of dilemma. Application of extracorporeal surgery resulting in autotransplantation of the kidney for such complicated cases seems useful. Case 1 was a bilateral renal Wilms' tumors in a 17-month-old boy, case 2 and 3 were undiagnosed tumors in renal pelvis and ureter. Extracorporeal surgery enables an accurate partial nephrectomy and yet helps to avoid not only the dissemination of tumor cells, but also undesired nephrectomy in case of benign origin. On the contrary, bilateral nephrectomy followed by dialysis or homo-transplantation will result in an immunosuppressive state and the radicality may only be temporary. Besides, the 5-year survival of dialysis therapy is in the range of 60-65%. Thus the indication of autotransplantation was signified in the tumor situation of case 1. For the 2nd and 3rd cases, this method seems to be the best in satisfying the dilemma in discussion. Likewise, the complicated renal calculi could be completely removed without further deterioration of renal function if they were extracorporeally treated and autotransplanted. We proved that 83% of the difficult stones can be completely removed under hypothermia in situ. For application of autotransplantation to the calculous disease, we feel observation of contraindication is essential for better results at this stage.
A case of renal arteriovenous fistula (A-V fistula) treated by transcatheter embolization using absolute ethanol is reported. The catheter was superselectively placed in the proximal renal artery supplying cirsoid vessels and 15 ml of absolute ethanol was injected into the renal artery at a rate of 1 ml per second. Ten minutes after injection, complete occlusion of the fistula was confirmed. The postembolization syndrome was mild, particularly back pain and fever were mitigated. Repeat arteriogram after 3 months demonstrated persistent occlusion of the fistula. From this experience and a review of the literature, we postulate that the advantages of therapeutic embolization with ethanol for A-V fistula compared with other embolization techniques are the following: (1) persistence of arterial occlusion extending to the peripheral vessels, (2) less frequent possibility of recanalization and collateral formation, (3) less systemic toxicity even if ethanol has escaped into the systemic circulation through A-V fistula, and (4) no danger of accidental embolization of other arteries. Herein, we also review briefly the literature concerning both mechanism and feature of action of ethanol injected into the artery.
A case of mixed infection of Salmonella (type C2) and Parasarcophaga crassipalpis (an intestinal myiasis) in a two-year-old girl is reported. A girl after dining in a restaurant developed typical Salmonella food-poisoning symptoms. Stool culture showed both Salmonella and fly larvae. This paper is to report a first case of this fly larvae infection and to review the recent trends of food-poisoning in Japan.

For the enzyme assay in red blood cells, three problems related to membrane structure were examined. (1) It was difficult to get full activity of membrane enzymes, especially ATPases. The effects of various buffers and substrates and conditions of preservation were examined. (2) During preservation of blood, phosphofructokinase (PFK) decreased most among 15 enzymes including all glycolytic enzymes. This decrease was prevented by the addition of adenine and inosine which produce ATP inside the cells. After hemolysis, PFK decreased most rapidly, too. ATP prevented the inactivation effectively. (3) after centrifugation, even according to Murphy's method, pyruvate kinase decreased most in the lowest layer of stacked erythrocytes. This might be due to the effect of centrifugation.
In order to study the effect of running on ATPase activity of myofibril and myosin in the hindlimb muscles, male wister rats of the same venter weighing approximately 50 g were housed in individual cages and allowed to run unimpeded on a treadwheel for 25-30 days. The myofibril and myosin prepared from the exercised rats had lower activation energy of ATP hydrolysis reaction and higher specific ATPase activity than those from the control rats. The myosin prepared from the running-group contained a much higher amount of the light chain having a molecular weight of 16,000, characteristic of white skeletal myosin, than that from the control group. These observations suggest that physical training changed the ratio of populations in myosin molecules, for instance, white and red skeletal myosin.
