[The mechanical effect of various types of tooth brushes on the alveolar mucosa and the gingiva (scanning electron microscopic studies)].

In animal experiments guinea pigs were subjected three times weekly for 4 weeks to cleaning with a plane multitufted or a toothed "space tufted" toothbrush for 20 seconds by a standardised method comparing opposing quadrants on each side. Scan electronmicroscopic evaluation of the tissue exfoliation from the area of attached gum before cleaning, after 2 and 4 weeks, shows that localised though different epithelial lesions occur with both tooth brushes. The lesions reach into the submucosa with the toothed type brush. Influence on the epithelium in the sense of normalising keratinisation after tooth brush massage could not be confirmed.

[Transmission and scanning electron microscopic investigation of the structure of so-called Clara cells of the bronchial system].

The epithelium of the bronchi and bronchioles were systematically examined in the lungs of rabbits. Particular attention was paid to the morphology of the Clara cells in the secretory phases. The apocrine secretion of these cells could be reconstructed from the results obtained. On the basis of morphological observations, the Clara cells produced a serous secretion which was mixed with the mucous secretion of the goblet cells in the bronchi. From these morphological results, the effect of substances which break down the secretion and also the morphological relationship of the Clara cells gain special interest.

Comparison between pathological and biochemical investigations on an experimental model of fibrosing alveolitis.

Subcutaneously injected Freund's adjuvant caused a fibrosing alveolitis in guinea pigs. This model served to compare biochemical and morphological parameters. The phospholipids were quantitatively extracted from lung tissue, separated and estimated. The fatty acid composition of lecithin was analysed. We observed a correlation between the histologic alterations and the content of phospholipids. A constantly higher phospholipid content was measured in the affected lungs in comparison to the normal ones; however, the composition of the phospholipids changed. The close correlation between the course of the inflammation and the biochemical pattern seems to indicate a function-correlated control of lung metabolism.

[Clinical, radiologic and histomorphological aspects of the hemangiopericytoma head and neck region].

Three hemangiopericytomas of the head and neck region with different clinical development are presented. In one patient the tumor was benign, in the two others malignant. In contrast to the opinion prevailing in the literature, histological criteria were found by means of which the degree of malignancy of these three tumors could be established. Irrespective of the degree of malignancy, radical surgery is recommended as therapy. Postoperative radiotherapy follows in those cases where a safety margin of clinically non-involved tissue surrounding the tumor could not be removed.
