Nutritional quality of germinated cowpea flour (Vigna unguiculata) and its application in home prepared powdered weaning foods.

Amino acid profiles, protein digestibility, corrected amino acid scores (PDCAAS), chemical scores, essential amino acid indexes, and calculated biological values of controlcowpea flour (CCF), germinated cowpea flour (GCF) prepared from cowpeas germinated at 25 degrees C for either 24 h or 48 h and weaning foods prepared from cowpea flours were determined. Locally available rice, cowpea flour, banana-pumpkin slurry, and skim milk powder and sucrose in the ratio 35:35:15:15:5 were used to formulate weaning food containing not less than 15% protein. The ingredients were cooked into a slurry and oven-dried to produce flakes. The nutritional and sensory qualities of the weaning products were evaluated. Germination had little effect on the amino acid profile of cowpeas. In vitro protein quality and starch digestibility were improved in germinated cowpea flour. The PDCAAS of 24 h germinated cowpea flour (GCF) weaning food was higher (55.49%) than CCF-weaning food (46.74%). Vitamin A activity in 24 h GCF weaning food was higher than in CCF-weaning food. In vitro starch digestibilities of 24 h GCF and 48 h GCF-weaning foods were higher than that of CCF weaning food. The 24 h GCF-weaning food which had a higher overall acceptability score by sensory panelist than 48 h GCF and CCF-weaning food is recommended for household consumption.

Cytotoxic 3,4-secoapotirucallanes from Aaglaia argentea bark.

Nine 3,4-secoapotirucallanes, argentinic acids A-I, were isolated from the bark of Aglaia argentea and transformed to their methyl esters 1-9. The structures were determined by spectral and chemical means. Compounds 1-8 showed moderate cytotoxic activity against KB cells (IC50 1.0-3.5 microg/mL).

Argenteanones C-E and argenteanols B-E, cytotoxic cycloartanes from Aglaia argentea.

Seven new cycloartanes, argenteanones C-E (4-6) and argenteanols B-E (7-10), have been isolated from Aglaia argentea leaves. All of these compounds possess significant cytotoxic activity against KB cells (IC50 values between 3.7 and 6.2 micrograms/mL). Structure elucidation was performed by 2D NMR spectroscopy, aided by molecular modeling in the case of the side chain of compound 7.

The socioemotional development of orphans in orphanages and traditional foster care in Iraqi Kurdistan.

In order to investigate orphans' situation and development in Iraqi Kurdistan, samples from the two available orphan care systems, the traditional foster care and the modern orphanages, are examined at an index test and at 1-year follow-up regarding competency scores and behavioral problems at both test occasions, and post-traumatic stress reactions at a 1-year follow-up. Achenbach Child Behavior Check List (CBCL) and two instruments regarding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were used. While competency scores showed an improvement in both samples at the follow-up test, the problem scores increased in the orphanage sample and decreased among the foster care subjects. Moreover, the orphanage sample reported higher frequency of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) than the foster care children. The results are discussed with regard to the value of the Kurdish society's own traditions in taking care of orphans.

Three-contrasts method hysteroscopy: the use of real-time ultrasonography for monitoring intrauterine operations.

Thirty-four patients were operated on by the technique of three-contrasts method hysteroscopy in this article. In three-contrasts method hysteroscopy, sonography guidance was used instead of laparoscopy guide. The distending medium introduced into the uterus during hysteroscopy and injected normal saline into the bladder and abdomen (which flowed into the posterior cul-de-sac) created these three contrasts. As a result, the walls of the uterus were clearly seen at sonography. Advantages and disadvantages of this technique have been described in detail.
