Histological and immunohistochemical studies on the articular cartilage after experimental discectomy of the temporomandibular joint in rabbits.

Total discectomy was performed experimentally in the rabbit temporomandibular joint (TMJ). In order to evaluate the injury and repair of the articular cartilage of the mandibular condyle after discectomy, both histologic and immunohistochemical observations were made. Immunohistochemical observation by using bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and its monoclonal antibody in vivo labelling method was used. The present study demonstrated that the cartilage on the articular surface of the condyle disappeared at 1 week post-operatively. This defect in the injured articular cartilage was not repaired by the cartilage, but was covered by a fibrous connective tissue at 6 weeks post-operatively, where the condylar recontouring by the adjacent articular cartilage, and flattening and hyperplasia of the condyle were observed. Thus, the cartilaginous repair following discectomy was characterized by the proliferation of the adjacent cartilage to the injured site and osteoblastic formation in the bone marrow at the exposed subchondral bone.

[Arthrographic investigation for the disk configuration with closed lock of the temporomandibular joint].

The authors examined arthrotomographies of 89 patients (96 joints) with closed lock of the temporomandibular joint to clarify the frequency of disk deformity correlated with disk perforation, bone change and patients' age. The disk configurations were divided into 3 types, those were type-1-elongated and preserved shape of the disk, 39 joints, type 2-folded disk, 11 joints, and type 3-massed disk, 46 joints. The frequency of disk deformity was 66.7% (64 joints). The numbers of disk perforation, (and bone change) in each type were type 1-2 (5) joints, type 2-1 (1) joint, and type 3-11 (13) joints. The average ages of each type were type 1-28.1 years, type-2-27.2 years, and type 3-40.1 years. These results indicate that high percentage of disk deformations exist in the closed lock patients with degenerative changes of the soft and hard parts of the temporomandibular joint.

[Correlation of the disk configuration with duration of illness and opening distance in patients with closed lock of the temporomandibular joint].

Classification of disk configuration for 96 joints (89 patients) of internal derangement with closed lock of the temporomandibular joint was performed by means of double-spacing contrast arthrotomography. The results of the classification were presented in the first report of this series. The disk shape was divided into 3 types; the first type-prolonged shape maintaining the main parts of the disk, the second type-folded disk, and the third type-massed disk. In this article, the authors tried to clarify the correlation of disk configuration with the duration of illness and with the interincisal opening distance at the first presentation. In the results, the average duration of clicking and locking was statistically longer in the joints of the third type. The interincisal opening distance was statistically smaller in the joints of the first type. These results indicate that the severity of the disk deformation is closely related to the duration of illness and to the joint function.

Breathing movements before death in the primate fetus (Macaca mulatta).

The incidence and character of fetal breathing movements (FBMs) were determined by analysis of continuous tracheal pressure recordings in a 48 hour period preceeding fetal death in utero in 7 chronic pregnant monkey preparations (Macaca mulatta). All fetuses were judged normal by blood gas tensions, pH, and fetal heart rate within 48 hours of death. In the normal fetus breathing movements were periodic and a circadian distribution in the incidence of FBMs was observed. Four distinct patterns of FBMs were observed in the normal fetuses. In five fetuses death occurred in the intrapartum period; all five fetuses were breathing at the onset of labor. A progressive fall in the incidence of FBMs was observed in labor coincident with the development of fetal acidemia. In the remaining two fetuses death occurred before labor. Apnea and gasping were observed in all fetuses before death. The duration of apnea and gasping appeared dependent upon the nature of the lethal insult.

Inhibitory effect of Capsella bursa-pastoris extract on growth of Ehrlich solid tumor in mice.

The treatment of ICR mice with i.p. injections (0.14 g/kg/day) of the extract of Capsella bursa-pastoris herb (Cruciferae) caused 50 to 80% inhibition of the solid growth of Ehrlich tumor cells that had been inoculated into the s.c. tissue of the animals. The tumor lumps in the treated mice showed multifocal necroses and the infiltartion of host fibrous tissue cells. Experiments were also performed to isolate and identify the active component for the antitumor action, and an acidic substance was isolated in crystalline form from the herb extract. This acidic substance was identified as fumaric acid and was effective in inhibiting the growth of Ehrlich solid tumor at a dose of 10 mg/kg/day. The 50% lethal dose (i.p.) of this acid was 266 mg/kg.
