[Evaluation of chemotherapy of breast cancer (2). Clinical evaluation of the blood and tissue concentrations of FT-207 following intrarectal administration].

In order to examine the transfer of antitumor drug in breast cancer after administration of FT-207 suppository, FT and 5-FU concentrations in blood, tumor tissues, normal tissues and axillary lymph nodes were determined respectively. FT and 5-FU concentrations in tumor tissues were higher than those in normal tissues or lymph nodes in every cases, and there was a significant difference between FT and 5-FU concentration in blood and tumor tissues. Blood levels of FT and 5-FU remained quite constant at 16 and 20 hours after administration, respectively. Accordingly, it was suggested that the administration of FT-207 suppository to breast cancer was very effective as an adjuvant chemotherapy.

[Effect of solcoseryl and combined therapy of solcoseryl and FT-207 for mice bearing meth-A tumor].

The effects of a combined chemotherapy of solcoseryl and FT-207 on tumor growth, delayed hypersensitivity and cell population of the spleen were studied using inbred BALB/c mice. Meth-A tumor cells (2 X 10(6] were inoculated into the back of 5 to 6 week old BALB/c male mouse. Animals were divided into three groups: Solcoseryl group, in which 0.04 mg of solcoseryl was injected intravenously three times before inoculation and four times after inoculation; Combined group, in which 1.2 mg of FT-207 and 0.04 mg of solcoseryl were injected intravenously four times after inoculation; FT-207 group, in which 1.2 mg of FT-207 was injected four times after inoculation, with out solcoseryl administration. Following results were obtained: Solcoseryl group showed enhanced immunity and tumor suppression; Decreased immunity due to FT-207 was recovered by administration of solcoseryl but no tumor suppression was observed and, Decreased T-cell population of spleen due to FT-207 was recovered by administration of solcoseryl. These facts suggested that solcoseryl was useful because of making recovery possible from decreased immunity due to chemotherapy.

Actihaemyl

[Case of breast cancer associated with Recklinghausen's disease].

Malignant epithelial tumors associated with Recklinghausen disease are very rare. A 32-year-old female with Recklinghausen disease was admitted to our hospital complaining of a 5 X 4 cm left breast mass. A malignant tumor of the breast was diagnosed by mammography, echography and clinical features. Radical mastectomy was performed and pathological examination showed papillotubular adenocarcinoma. Three cases of breast cancer associated with Recklinghausen disease reported in the Japanese literature were reviewed.

Adenocarcinoma

[Case of gastrin-producing carcinoid, adenocarcinoma and xanthoma of the stomach].

A rare case with gastrin-producing carcinoid, adenocarcinoma and xanthoma of the stomach is presented. A 69-year-old male underwent total gastrectomy with splenectomy and distal pancreatectomy. The histological type of the carcinoid was poorly differentiated (type D), and argyrophil cell carcinoma. Immunoperoxidase staining of the carcinoid was positive for gastrin and negative for glucagon, somatostatin or insulin. The histological findings of the carcinoma were tub 2, medullary, INF alpha, se, ly 2, v 1, ow(-), aw(-), n 1. Histologically, the xanthoma consisted of foamy macrophages accumulated in the lamina propria.

[Studies on the cervicobrachial disorder among cash register operators. Part 1. Changes of characteristics of patients after improvement of working conditions].

Occupational cervicobrachial disorders (OCD) among cash register operators have become an important problem since 1969. Some improvements of working conditions, such as, shortened operating time, adoption of worker rotation system and change of mechanical registers with heavy keytouches to electronic ones with light keytouches, were introduced in 1973-1974 at supermarkets at which the authors engaged in health care activities for the prevention of the disorder. Analysis was made for characteristics of 120 cash register operators of these supermarkets suffering from OCD during the period from 1972 to 1978, with special concern for differences before and after the improvement of working conditions. The subjects were divided into three groups by the year of their first consultation, A: 1972-1973, B: 1974 and C: 1975-1976. Patients of group A had engaged in cash register operation under the working conditions before improvements, and those of group C had engaged after improvements of working conditions. The authors observed that the incidence of the disorder among group C were less than that of group A, but the proportion of severe cases to all the patients were not changed. In group C more cases with chronic onset were observed than among the other two groups, and those patients with chronic onset took longer period for recovery compared with the other patients. In patients of group C compared with those of group A fewer complaints and muscle tenderness in the hands and fingers were noticed, and more cases with lowered back strength and cinesalgia of the neck were observed. The reasons for this were considered to be that the improvement of working conditions reduced the loads to the hands, but not much reduced the loads to the neck and the back.

[Studies on the cervicobrachial disorder among cash register operators. Part 2. A review on clinical findings and working conditions of patients].

Complaints, clinical findings and working conditions of the patients suffering from occupational cervicobrachial disorders (OCD) were discussed, with special reference to the prognosis of the patients. Subjects were 120 cash register operators with OCD engaged in supermarkets at which the authors participated in the health care activities for the prevention of the disorder. Thirty-three of them suffered from the disorder after getting well from the first onset. The authors discussed on the relationship between complaints and clinical findings of the patients and duration needed for recovery, the relationship between clinical finding and complaints of "the upper extremities" by the questionnaire of "complaints in daily life" and the relations of appearance of lowered grip strength to complaints and clinical findings. Case studies were also examined as to the influence of working conditions on the prognosis of the patients. Results were summerized as follows. 1. The severer the grade of OCD, the longer the duration needed to recover. 2. There were more complaints of arms, "the upper extremities" and "the legs", increased appearance of lowered back strength, cinesalgia of the shoulder, neck, and wrist joints, paresthesia, positiveness of Morley's test and muscle tenderness in the extensor muscles in the fingers, neck, back and so on among the patients with delayed recovery than among those recovered within 3 months. 3. Lowered back strength, muscle tenderness in the neck and in various sites of the body were observed more among the patients with many complaints of "the upper extremities" than among those without. 4. Lowered grip strength was not considered to be useful for early diagnosis of the patients. 5. Such working conditions, as carrying heavy goods and keeping upper extremities raised for a long time were considered to hamper the recovery of the disorder.

[Antibacterial activities of cefotiam against various causative organisms isolated from clinical materials (author's transl)].

Antibacterial activities of cefotiam (CTM), cefazolin (CEZ) and cefmetazole (CMZ) against various causative organisms isolated from clinical materials were investigated. CTM showed excellent antibacterial activities against Gram negative bacilli. Especially against E. coli and Klebsiella, CTM showed superior antibacterial activities to other antibiotics, CMZ and CEZ. The MICs of CTM against Serratia and Enterobacter dispersed very widely, but showed small values comparing with CMZ and CEZ. The antibacterial activity of CTM against P. mirabilis was slightly superior to that of CMZ, but against P. vulgaris was rather inferior to that of CMZ. However, these 3 antibiotics, CTM, CMZ and CEZ, showed slightly less active against non-glucose-fermentation bacilli.

Simple, direct measurement of lipoprotein X in serum.

This relatively simple method for quantitative estimation of lipoprotein X is based on assay of phospholipids in precipitates of lipoprotein X. We first remove other lipoproteins by precipitation with phosphotungstic acid solution. Lipoprotein X is then precipitated from the supernatant fluid with an alkaline solution of magnesium ion, and phospholipid is determined in this precipitate. Results are linearly related to concentration of lipoprotein X. The CV is less than 3%. Results correlated well with those for agar gel electrophoresis.
