Brain-typical creatinekinase in the serum of newborn infants with perinatal brain damage.

The normal values of serum-CK-activity in healthy newborns varied greatly (95% range: 4--165 U/l; 257 probands) and the borderline to pathological values was not sharp. Brain-typical CK-isoenzyme (CK-BB) could be detected in serum of 6 of 8 infants with perinatal brain damage by means of agar gel electrophoresis. The combination of neuropathological symptoms, increased total-serum-CK-activity, and significant amount of CK-BB in serum seemed to be a sure sign of severe CNS-damage in newborns.

[Hemoperitoneum in the newborn infant].

Among 46272 term and preterm newborns 6 cases (0,13%) of massive intraabdominal hemorrhages could be found. The origin of hemorrhage was in 5 cases the liver. Premature newborns with severe respiratory distress had the main incidence (4 cases). Organic lesions were seen in 2 cases only and other traumatic causes could not be detected. Therefore, the term "abdominal birth injury" should in such cases be replaced by "Neonatal hemoperitoneum".

[Diagnosis and frequency of pneumothorax in neonatal age (author's transl)].

Between 1971 and 1975 in a prospective study of 2211 chest radiographs of newborns with cardiorespiratory insufficiency a pneumothorax was found in 1.5 percent. In relation to all newborns of Erfurt during this period this rate is 0.2 percent. In all cases of cardiorespiratory insufficiency in newborns the immediate x-ray-examination of the thorax is necessary.
