From rural Bladen County, NC, to central Harlem in New York to Toms River, NJ, hospitals are shredding red tape and blasting organizational boundaries to serve the broadest needs of their communities. NOVA Awards. Building healthier communities.

The following profiles of this year's winners of the second annual NOVA Awards, sponsored by the American Hospital Association and Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, exemplify humanity, which is what health care is all about. The winners all set out to boost the health and well-being of their communities. That frequently means expanding the traditional hospital mission to ensure that disadvantaged and underserved people not only get good health care, but also safer streets, nutritious food, a decent place to live, and a future for their children. They're all part of a community's ecology. None of these projects is finished. But you have to start somewhere to get somewhere else.

Crash course: piecing together the continuum of care.

Since Laurel Health System CEO Robert Morris was injured in a devastating motorcycle accident on Aug. 13, he's gained a patient's perspective on the extent to which his rural Pennsylvania system is achieving the "other-centered" approach he's attempting to foster across Laurel. Morris and others, whose care spans the continuum of services needed by many patients, are challenging the notions about what it means to build a true continuum of care. Their stories reveal the achievements made to date--and the obstacles that remain.
