Parenteral administration of hydrocarbons is particularly indicated after heavy trauma or operations. In this case, fructose and the sugar substitutes sorbitol and xylitol play an important role as they can be metabolized independently from insulin. In this comprehensive review, the objectives and goals of parenteral nutrition as well as the metabolic processes of sugar substitutes in the human organism and their effects and the tolerances are discussed.
Incidence and type of arrhythmia, using continuous ECG monitoring, were examined in 79 patients six weeks to 24 months after acute myocardial infarction, the findings being compared with arrhythmias at rest and on exercise, and correlated with signs of heart failure and coronary insufficiency. Arrhythmias were revealed in 16% (n = 13 at rest) and 19% (n = 10 of 52) on exercise. But continuous ECG monitoring revealed it in 86% (n = 68). On the other hand, arrhythmias may occur in the resting ECG but be rare on continuous monitoring. Ventricular extrasystoles were the most common arrhythmia, often multifocal and giving rise to bigeminy, only rarely as a result of exercise. Such extrasystoles usually showed right or right and left bundle conduction delays. Their frequency increased with increasing age of the patient. They were particularly frequent in patient who already had cardiac symptoms at rest, in patients with a large heart, and those who could not easily be exercised. Arrhythmias were more frequent a year after infarction than shortly before discharge from hospital or six months after infarction.

The hematological and chemical examination of the 3rd generation of rats fed soy bean oil used for fish frying showed not any abnormal data.
Long-term feeding of frying oil to male rats increases significantly the activity of the drug and toxic substances metabolizing microsomal enzyme system. This effect was also seen in the females, but only statistically insignificant.

The development of the guinea pig gallbladder epithelium was studied from the 19th day of intrauterine life to the 31st postnatal day by means of histological and histochemical staining reactions. At first, the epithelium is a columnar pseudostratified one. Its transformation into a simple columnar eptihelium is terminated by the 31st day of the intrauterine life. Then the epithelial cells become more columnar and their nuclei acquire a basal position. Somewhat later the epithelium invaginates the underlying mesenchyme. Up to the 57th day the epithelium contains much glycogen. Neutral and carboxylated mucosubstances are demonstrable after the 30th day. From the 48th day onwards sulphated mucosubstances can be visualized in some cells in the depth of the invaginations and from the 51st day in the epithelial cells of the gallbladder. "Light" mucoid cells appear first in the epithelium of day 58. After the 6th postnatal day the "light" cells are rarely seen in the invaginations. The development of the gallbladder epithelium is completed about the 10th postnatal day. The epithelial mucosubstances of the gallbladder of the adult animal could be classified as GC- mucins and S-mucinsA, 1.0 MgCl2.
In feeding experiments no differences could be observed when used frying fats were fed to rats in the same amount and over the same period if compared with the unheated fats (partially hardened groundnut oil, soyabean oil). In details we investigated: concentration of plasma lipids, including content of total cholesterol, electrophoresis of plasma lipoproteins, fatty acid composition of plasma lipids and of adipose tissue. Amount and composition of the unsaponifiable matter in heated and unheated fats as well as the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were determined. In in-vitro experiments we investigated the effect of pancreas lipase on these fats.
