[Structure of the Salmonella from animals, birds and the environment through the period of 1970-1975].

Studied were biochemically and serologically the species of a total of 8738 Salmonella cultures. Most of the investigated strains belonged to subgenus I--95 species; to subgenus II belonged one species (Salmonella sofia); to subgenus III belonged 4 species: Salmonella arizonae 11:b:1, 7; Salmonella arizonae 35:r:z35; Salmonella arizonae 35:z52:1, 5, 7; Salmonella arizonae 58:rz53:z57 of three serologic groups. The attention was focused on more than 20 (new to this country) Salmonellae among which a Salmonella bulgaria species new to the Salmonella genus. Data are given for the origin of the strains, the biochemical and serologic behaviour, the sensitivity to phage O1 and the phage types of Salmonella typhimurium and Salmonella enteritidis.

[Bioptic investigations of intrathoracic sarcoidosis in occupationally injured persons (author's transl)].

Diagnostics of intrathoracic sarcoidosis in people with an occupational injury or an annoyance of respiratory organs are frequently connected with additional difficulties. The first roentgenological manifestations of a silicosis caused during the period of dry drilling especially in ore metal mining, are frequently bilaterally increased shadows of the hilum without any worth mentioning findings in the parenchyma. The radiograph of diffuse restiform and speckled shadows in people exposed to dust without a sufficient load or in younger age always demands a search for sarcoidosis. Granulomatoses of the lungs caused by organic dusts, berillium and other things may develop difficulties not only in the interpretation of clinical data but also in the bioptic findings for instance after an endoscopic antalgic biopsy of the bronchomucosa. The authors summarize their experiences with the application of bioptic methods (skin biopsy, according to the Kveim-test, scalenobiopsy, explorative thoracotomy) in workers suspected to suffer from a sarcoidosis, who--as to their profession--had been influenced by noxious substances in respect to their lungs. Two typical cases are briefly discussed. The signification of the synopsis of clinico roentgenological, industriohygienical and bioptical data is stressed especially in case of a suspicion on the combination of pneumoconiosis and sarcoidosis.

[Isolation of R-phase strains of S. senftenberg form fish meal].

Studied are being a total of 40 strains of S. senftenberg, which at the time of isolation proved to be in R-phase z43, with an antigenic formula 3,19:z43:--. Splitting of the normal S-phase gst is possible at reseeding the cultures from 5 to 10 times in semisolid 0.7 per cent agar, adding no H-antiserum. This is essential for all diagnostic laboratories as not all of them have at their disposal a monofactor antiserum z43 (the production of which is rather difficult and expensive) for inhibiting the respective R-phase.

[Phage typing of strains of S. enteritidis isolated in Bulgaria].

Studied were a total of 221 strains of Salmonella enteritidis isolated from birds, pigs, cattle, dogs, rodents, forage, environment, food products of animal origin, and human beings, in terms of their phage typing, in order to study the epizootiology of the foci of infection. Twelve phages were established: 2a, 3a, 4a, 5a, 6a, 7a, 8a, 9a, 15, 19, 20 and 21. Most widely distributed proved phage type 6a, followed by phage type 2a. The remaining phages occured more rarely, and some of them--15, 19, 20 and 21--were found only in particular districts and farms.

[Biological action of cement dust in intraperitoneal and intratracheal tests].

The morphological changes occuring upon intraperitoneal and intratracheal application of cement with free silica content amounting to 1.30% are described. Initially, the changes in the peritoneal cavity are mainly necrotic and exudative, while after subsiding, the granulomas formed around the uneliminated dust particles predominate without exhibiting fibrotic phenomena. Upon intratracheal application, lesions typical of cement occur, coined by the authors with the term "experimental cement pneumopathy". It is a matter of changes presenting as "pseudopolyp" formations around the small bronchi and bronchioli, slipping into their lumen and thus causing its obturation. In the final stages of the experiment, a definitive peribronchial fibrosis with perifocal and subpleural emphysema is developed around the involved bronchi.

Characteristics of lung dusts and their relation to dust exposure and pathological findings in the lungs.

Lung dusts were investigated, post-mortem, in twenty-five miners from mixed metal mines, tunnels, and quarries who had exposed to high concentrations of mixed dust containing about 20-25% free crystalline silica. The character of the relations found between the amount of quartz per 100 g dry tissue and the clinical, X-ray and pathological findings is similar to that established in coal miners. The difference lies in the fact that with equal amounts of quartz per 100 g dry tissue, there is less silicosis in coal miners than in our cases; the average residence time of retained dust is longer in coal miners, but its quartz per cent is lower.

[Differences in the character and intensity of morphologic changes in the peritoneal cavity and lungs resulting from experimental exposure to cement dust].

Results are submitted of studies on the influence exerted by cement dust, introduced into the peritoneal cavity and lung of experimental animals. The difference recorded are explained by the low free silicon dioxide content in the cement investigated and to the presence of additional chemical ingredients. The inference is reached that in the course of testing dusts with high free silicon dioxide content and determinations of the fibrinogenous action of the dust investigated, the two methods yield approximately identical results. Anyway, during studies of dusts with low silica content in the presence of additional chemical components, and determinations of their general toxic and biological action, the results obtained by either of the methods should be distinguished and separately evaluated. The organs of the pleural cavity, respectivly the lung, are more feasible for investigation of the fibrinogenic activity of dusts, whilst the peritoneal cavity is more suitable for investigation of the cumulative action of dusts with fibrous and toxic effect.
