To examine plasma levels of vasoconstrictive prostanoid (thromboxane A2) in patients with coronary artery disease, amounts of its product, thromboxane B2, in acidic lipid extracts from plasma were determined by a radioimmunoassay. Peripheral venous samples were obtained in 14 normal subjects and 12 patients with coronary artery disease, and simultaneous aortic and coronary sinus blood samples were obtained at rest, during pacing, and after pacing in eight cases who were subjected to atrial pacing stress test. Mean thromboxane B2 levels in peripheral venous blood in 14 normal subjects were found to be 243 +/- 96 pg/ml. Of nine cases with angina pectoris on effort (angiographically documented severe coronary artery stenosis), five exhibited increased thromboxane B2 levels in peripheral plasma. Three cases of a variant form of angina pectoris exhibited pronounced increases in peripheral thromboxane B2 levels. Of eight cases subjected to atrial pacing stress test, three exhibited marked increases in thromboxane B2 levels in coronary sinus effluent at peak pacing, two of which were accompanied by typical anginal pain during the test. These findings suggest that increased thromboxane A2 production may be associated with altered thromboxane metabolism. This may occur because of altered interactions between functions of vascular wall and blood platelets within coronary circulation in patients with coronary artery disease.
Auditory brainstem evoked responses (ABRs) and behavioral audiometry in 25 infants with kernicterus were studied to determine the level of the lesion causing their hearing disorders. ABR thresholds, peak latencies of wave I and V, and interwave latency of wave V-I were measured; behavioral audiometric thresholds were determined through conditioned orientation reflex audiometry (COR). Eighty-eight per cent of infants with kernicterus who showed ABR threshold elevation with respect to age-matched normals, were found to show ABR abnormalities associated with peripheral hearing loss, and 84% of these were found to have COR threshold elevation. The ABR abnormalities were threshold elevation of wave V, prolonged latency of wave I and V, and the absence of ABRs. However, no brainstem lesion pattern was found in our cases. Our results suggested that at least some lesions which produce hearing disorders in kernicterus occur in the cochlea or auditory nerve.

In liver homogenates of rats fed a low-level diet of Wheat-Rice- or Miyazaki-pattern amino acid mixture, some enzymes such as glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, ATP citrate lyase, fatty acid-synthesizing enzymes, malic enzyme and L-alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase, whose activities are indicators of lipogenesis have been determined from the viewpoint of the mechanisms producing fatty liver. In the early experimental period, malic enzyme activity increased more markedly in rats fed low amino acid mixture diets than in the control group, and L-alpha-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase activity in the liver increased slightly. Conversely, ATP citrate lyase and fatty acid-synthesizing enzyme activities remained almost at control levels, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity tended to decrease. These results suggest that some other associated factors, such as depression of the lipid transfer system in the liver rather than accelerated lipogenesis itself, may be the main cause of the fatty livers produced under these nutritional conditions.
Correlation of self-mutilation and sleep stage in the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome was studied by a polygraphic method. Five patients and three control boys were monitored with EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG and respiration throughout the night. The results were as follows: 1. The sleep-time of the patients was much disturbed during the night. 2. Decreased REM density was noticed with low DQ of the patients. 3. Self-mutilation during sleep-time was observed a lot in stages 1, 2, and REM in two cases. 4. No correlation was observed between body movement and self-mutilation in the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. These data suggested functional disorders of the frontal lobe in the patients.

Previous serolgoical studies strongly suggested Akabane virus to be the etiologic agent of epizootic abortion and congenital arthrogryposis-hydranencephaly in cattle, and this view was further corroborated in this study by the isolation of the virus from an aborted fetus in an epizootic of the disease and from a fetus extracted froma cow which was suggested by serologic tests to have a recent infection with the virus. The latter fetus had histological changes of encephalomyelitis and polymyositis, and specific antigens of Akabane virus was shown by the immunofluorescent technique in brain tissues as well as skeletal muscular tissues. The virus was recovered from various fetal tissues and fluids, and in relatively large amounts from brain, spinal cord, cerebral fluid, skeletal muscles and fetal placenta. The intracranial inoculation of suckling mice, 1-2 days of age, was the most sensitive system for Akabane virus isolation and HmLu-1, a continuous cell line from hamster lung, seemed almost as sensitive as suckling mice.
