A prenatal diagnosis of GM1-gangliosidosis was made in a pregnancy at risk, on the basis of a deficiency of beta-galactosidase activity demonstrated in cultured amniotic fluid cells. Biochemical analyses were performed in the aborted fetus. GM1-ganglioside beta-galactosidase activity was reduced to 1% of the control value in both the brain and liver of the affected fetus. Lamellar bodies suggestive of membranous cytoplasmic bodies were found in cells of basal ganglions, while the accumulation of GM1-ganglioside in the brain was not remarkable.
Evidence for a new hepatitis-specific antigen has been obtained from double immunodiffusion assays between acute and convalescent sera obtained from patients with non-A, non-B post-transfusion hepatitis. The designation hepatitis C (HC) antigen is proposed. HC was found in the acute-phase sera of all 13 non-A, non-B post-transfusion hepatitis patients with longer incubation and duration periods (type 2) tested, but only transiently in 4 out of 10 acutephase sera obtained from patients with type 1 non-A, non-B hepatitis, with shorter incubation and duration periods. The antigen was also detected in 2 out of 16 single specimens obtained during the acute phase from acute hepatitis patients who had not received a blood-transfusion. This suggests presence of a carrier state. No patients with alcoholic hepatitis and no healthy blood-donor carried HC antigen. The antigen seems distinct from those of hepatitis A and B (surface and core). It migrated in the serum beta-globulin region and had a buoyant density of 1.30 and a molecular weight between 100 000 and 300 000. Antibodies against HC antigen were found in only 30% of the type-2 non-A, non-B post-transfusion hepatitis patients and did not persist for long. However, these antibodies were directed specifically against HC antigen and moved in a manner similar to 7S globulin on rate-zonal centrifugation.

By using chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, aminohexyl-Sepharose 4B and Sephadex G-200, rat liver extract was shown to contain at least three fractions, IA, IB and II, of histone phosphatase. Fractions IA and II are probably the same enzymes as the previously described glycogen synthase phosphatase and phosphorylase phosphatase, respectively, but IB exhibits noticeable activities only with phosphohistone as substrate. Approximate molecular weights of 69 000, 300 000 and 160 000 were determined by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 for IA, IB and II, respectively.
Cell surface markers of 21 cases of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) were studied with various surface markers, especially by using anti-human B lymphocyte serum (ABS), anti-human thymocyte serum (ATS-T) and anti-human peripheral T lymphocyte serum (ALS-T) which were rendered specific for human B lymphocytes, human thymocytes and human peripheral T lymphocytes. The proportion of cell types in ALL was null cell leukemia 38%, B cell leukemia 38% and T cell leukemia 24%, respectively. T-ALL cells were reactive to ATS-T but not to ALS-T, a fact which suggests their thymic origin. It should be noted that these anti-lymphocyte sera detected T or B marker antigens, even when other markers showed negative. Twelve patients with ALL were also investigated from their clinical pictures. Patients with B cell leukemia had severe signs of anemia and a higher grade of hepato-splenomegalies than other types in ALL. Patients with T cell leukemia were in older age levels and had a poorer prognosis.
We have treated surgically 11 patients with thyroid carcinoma that had infiltrated into the trachea. Three patients had primary tumours, and eight had recurrent tumours after previous operations. Sleeve resection of trachea was performed where thyroid carcinoma had proliferated; the trachea was reconstructed by end-to-end anastomosis. In two patients 10 rings of the trachea were resected. In three patients the anterior half of the cricoid cartilage was resected along with the cervical trachea. In one patient tracheoplasty was performed using partial extracorporeal circulation because severe tracheal stenosis prevented endotracheal intubation. Two of the 11 patients died from the surgery and one from disseminated metastases. One patient who had undergone tracheal resection for thyroid carcinoma three years and five months previously had a recurrence of the tumour in the trachea adjacent to the anastomosis, and a second tracheal resection was performed. In three patients postoperative laryngeal stenosis occurred. Five patients are alive and well two years and one month to four years and seven months after their operations. The histological pattern of the tumour was papillary adenocarcinoma in all 11 patients.
