1. Osteoporosis is a major public health problem that is predicted to worsen over the next decade and preventative strategies that increase bone strength have become the focus of substantial research. 2. Although mechanical load is a primary factor in the acquisition and maintenance of skeletal tissue, the type of exercise used and when in life it is most effectively prescribed remain inconclusive. 3. The present study compared 10 weeks of resistance training in both young and mature female Sprague-Dawley rats and measured bone density and body composition by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and biomechanical properties by three point bending tests of the tibia and femur. 4. No significant differences were observed for any of the bone parameters when comparing exercise and control groups at either age. This was despite using a comparable training protocol to that in humans and using loads of approximately 150% bodyweight. 5. The present study concludes that more intensive work programmes of resistance training or different outcome measures are required when using animal models for skeletal research.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of T-Flux implant in nonpenetrating glaucoma surgery. METHODS: This clinical interventional case series study included 35 eyes of 35 patients with medically uncontrolled primary open angle glaucoma. External trabeculectomy with T-Flux (ETTF) is a technique of nonpenetrating glaucoma surgery, in which after removing deep scleral tissue and un-roofing the canal of Schlemn (CS) the external trabecular tissue is peeled off to enhance the aqueous drainage without opening the anterior chamber. A non-absorbable T-Flux implant (IOL TECH Laboratories, France) was sutured in deep intrascleral space to keep it patent. Snellen's best-corrected visual acuity, slit lamp biomicroscopy, intraocular pressure (IOP), gonioscopy, funduscopy, and optic disc assessment were performed preoperatively and postoperatively at 1 day, 1 week, and 1, 3 , 6, and 12 months. Visual field testing was performed preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: For three eyes, surgery was converted to standard trabeculectomy owing to the perforation of trabeculo-Descemet's membrane and iris prolapse and excluded from the study. The results of the remaining 32 eyes were included in the study. Preoperative IOP (mean +/- SD) of 32.88 +/- 5.7 mmHg decreased to 15.44 +/- 1.6 mmHg after 12 months. Ten eyes (28.6%) had microhyphema that resolved spontaneously; 3 eyes (8.6%) had microperforation without iris prolapse so ETTF was proceeded routinely. The preoperative number of antiglaucoma medications per patient reduced from (mean +/- SD) 2.74 +/- 0.61 to 0.11 +/- 0.32 postoperatively at 12 months. Visual acuity and visual fields remained stable. CONCLUSIONS: ETTF appears to provide significant control of IOP and have low incidence of complications.
Small cell carcinoma of the gall bladder is very rare. We report a 25-year-old woman with this tumor. These tumors typically occur in elderly women with cholelithiasis; chemotherapy is not known to improve survival.
BACKGROUND: Breast-feeding and proper weaning methods are very important to cover the milestones of life and to achieve good nutritional status under five. The proper lactation, feeding and supplementation methods must be adopted to achieve this goal. In Pakistan a lot of agencies have been working on this. It is included in the daily effort of every doctor and medic to achieve this goal. METHODS: This study was done to know the results of our efforts in Oghi Pakistan. A Hospital based study on 10 children/mothers was conducted. The children were randomly selected from the best E.P.I. center of Oghi. The mothers were interviewed after explaining them the purpose of the study. The questionnaire was filled and questions were explained in local language for the convenience of mother. The parameters studied and questions asked included age, sex, weight, height, first feed, age at weaning, type of milk, and type of weaning food. RESULTS: The results were found satisfactory due to the hard work of workers of UNICEF, Health department of NWFP and better when compared to other areas of the province.
Nine hundred and thirty three students of Dacca University were examined: mean haemoglobin levels were 80.5 per cent for men and 70.0 per cent for women. Five hundred and thirty three (57.3%) of the students had single or multiple intestinal parasitic infections, of which Ascaris lumbricoides (366), Entamoeba histolytica (113) and Trichuris trichiura (99) were the commonest. It is suggested that chronic nutritional deficiencies are compounded by these parasites, leading to low weights, and low haemoglobins.
Health educators are often faced with the dilemma of developing materials or programs that begin at a level appropriate to the needs of individuals or the population as a whole. In 1992, a randomized telephone survey of the public's knowledge of risk factors relating to stroke was conducted in Saskatoon. The risk factors most frequently identified were poor diet (40%), hypertension (36%) and stress (36%). Respondents with a family history of stroke were significantly more likely to identify hypertension as a risk factor than those without such a history and significantly less likely to identify stress as a risk factor. In all, 24% reported a family history of acute myocardial infarction, and 28% reported a family history of stroke. Eighty percent were willing to learn more about the risk factors, and 88% were willing to make the appropriate lifestyle changes to reduce their risk of an event. Assessment of public knowledge can help in planning initiatives directed at prevention, early identification and appropriate referral.
