Cutaneous delayed hypersensitivity (CDH) tests, using 6 antigens (PHA, PPD, SK-SD, Candida, Mumps and DNCB) were performed in 260 patients with cervical cancer and the following results were obtained. 1) Decrease in incidence of positive CDH (PHA, PPD and DNCB) was found as the clinical stage advanced. Especially, decrease in incidence of positive CDH (DNCB and PHA) was found in stage III and IV. 2) There was no relationship between the incidence of positive CDH (SK-SD, Candida and Mumps) and clinical stage but, decrease in incidence of these tests was found in stage III and IV. 3) In comparison on numbers of positive CDH, there was no significance in control groups and cervical cancer patients. 4) Incidence of advanced invasion of primary lesion (gamma and delta type) was 83.7% in DNCB-negative group who were treated with curative operation. 5) Incidence of regional lymph node metastasis was 42.9% in Candida-negative group, whereas, 16.2% in Candida-positive group who were treated with curative operation.
Quantitative analysis of intestinal microflorae in the diverted and feces-containing portions of the colon after performing an ascendo-descendostomy Roux en Y in Wistar-Lewis rats, the colonic portion from the ascending colon to the midportion of the descending colon being diverted from the fecal stream, disclosed a drastic decrease in the total amount of the intestinal microflora as well as most anaerobic microflorae in the diverted portion of the colon where the amount of the colonic content was extremely reduced. This diverted segment was least susceptible of developing macroscopical epithelial neoplasia after exposure to a carcinogen, MNNG, sufficient in amount to evoke multiple large neoplasia in the ordinary colon, although microscopical intramucosal neoplastic foci were induced there. Thus the existence of the intestinal content was essential for the process of promotion in experimental colonic carcinogenesis. The close parallelism between amounts of intestinal content and amounts of intestinal microflorae, especially anaerobic ones, suggested the roles of anaerobic microflorae in colonic carcinogenesis.
Thirty-nine invasive mole patients treated during the last 6 years (1971-1976) in our clinic, were studied. The data were summarized in the following items. 1. Surgical treatment was done in 31 cases (79.5%), and methods of operation were removal of focus in 13 cases and hysterectomy in 18. Chemotherapy was performed in 31 cases (79.5%). 2. In 31 operated patients, all of invasive lesions were in uterine bodies. A degree of chorial invasion into myometrium was shallow in 12 cases, medium in 12 and deep in 7. Molar vesicles were observed in 17 cases and trophoblastic tissues were microscopically confirmed in 14. 3. Anti-cancer agents, such as ACTD and MTX, were required 1-4 courses in 8 patients received chemotherapy alone and 1-6 courses in 23 patients received operation combined with chemotherapy. 4. Up to the present time, 14 pregnancies in 11 cases out of these patients occurred, but 2 of them ended in spontaneous abortion and one was molar pregnancy. 5. Malignant sequela, that is, choriocarcinoma was occurred in 2 cases. But, these 2 cases are in remission. 6. Thirty-seven patients, including 2 choriocarcinoma cases, are healthy at present.
Thirty-two cases of hydatidiform mole without endometrial invasion of chorial tissue and 17 of invasive mole were studied to ascertain whether these two diseases can be differentiated by various immune parameters. All of hydatidiform 11 of invasive mole were sampled at a state of "mole in utero" (pre-evacuation), but 6 of invasive mole were at a post-evacuation state, respectively. The results were summarized in the following items; 1. Serum total protein, especially albumin decreased with no significant difference in both groups. Globulin fractionation (alpha 1, alpha 2, beta, gamma-globulin) showed no characteristic changes. 2. A variation of immunoglobin (IgG, IgM, IgA) was similar in both. 3. Beta 1 C (a component of complement) increased in two groups, but no difference was revealed. 4. Leucocytosis was observed, but lymphocytosis was not detected in both groups. 5. Active E-RFC slightly increased, although total E-RFC and EAC-RFC were within normal range. But these findings were not statistically different in both. 6. In vitro lymphocyte-PHA-response was fairly depressed without a significant difference in two groups. 7. Suppressive effect of serum on lymphocyte-response was also slightly strengthened, but a difference in both was not significant. 8. The results of immune skin tests (PHA, PPD, SK-SD, Candida) could not be debated with liquid numbers studied.
For the purpose of observing the cellular immune response to their own tumor cells, MLTR was performed on 16 cases of cervical cancer, 3 cases of corporeal cancer and 6 cases of ovarian cancer. The results of MLTR was presented as a stimulation index (S.I.) by the following formula. (Formula: see text). Results of S.I. were as follows; 1.37 +/- 1.47 in cervical cancer, 0.65 +/- 0.21 in corporeal cancer and 1.12 +/- 0.74 in ovarian cancer. A positive S.I. case which was more than 2.0, was found in 3 cases with cervical cancer (18.8%), in none with corporeal cancer (0.0%) and in 2 with ovarian cancer (33.3%). Thus, the cellular immune response to their autologous tumor cells was considered to be very slight in this assay system.

The UICC standard sample of asbestos, crocidolite, was injected subcutaneously into the flanks of CBA/lac mice. Asbestos fibres were found in milky spots in the serosal cavities more than 442 days after the injection, in the form of either naked fibres or asbestos bodies. Milky spots were the only structure in which asbestos fibres were observed in the mesothelial layer. The fact that asbestos fibres were found in the liver, spleen, kidney, brain, etc., in addition to milky spots, suggested that they were transported by the blood stream throughout the body. This assumption was confirmed by the similar distribution of asbestos after intravenous administration. The vascular and cellular structure of milky spots is such that they are particularly likely to trap blood-borne asbestos fibres. Hyperplastic changes were observed in milky spots after both subcutaneous and intravenous administration of asbestos in mice. The possible involvement of milky spots in the genesis of tumors of the mesothelium following exposure of animals to asbestos is discussed.
Five micrograms of finely ground crocidolite asbestos (UICC standard sample) were injected intraperitoneally into 3-week-old CBA mice, together with 10(5) FFU of Moloney murine sarcoma virus. Altogether 44 out of 61 mice (72.1%) so treated developed palpable intraperitoneal tumours, and half of these died of such tumours within 100 days. The same amount of quartz and carbon similarly administered gave lower tumour incidences, namely, 19.4% (3.2% fatal) and 11.9% (1.5% fatal) respectively. Only 1 out of 59 mice inoculated with the virus alone developed a palpable intraperitoneal tumour, and this regressed spontaneously within 10 days of its first appearance. No tumours were encountered in mice treated with either asbestos, quartz or carbon alone. All the neoplasms had the appearance, under the light microscope, of anaplastic sarcomas. Most of them were confined to the serosal surface of the abdominal cavity, although invasion of underlying tissues was observed in some of the animals that died. Electron microscopical examination of tumours revealed the presence of C-type particles budding off from cellular surface. Some neoplastic cells showed characteristic features of mesothelial lining cells. The role of milky spots (taches laiteuses) in oncogenesis by asbestos and virus, especially in the induction of mesothelioma, is discussed.
It was confirmed by the procedure of rec-assay that DNA-damaging activities were formed in the reaction systems containing nitrite and phenol derivatives including BHA, tryptophan or cysteine under gastric pH conditions. The mutagenic action of the nitrite-BHA, nitrite-tryptophan and nitrite-cysteine systems was also tested according to Ames' method using Salmonella typhimurium TA 1535 and TA 98. The mutagenic activity was observed in the nitrite-tryptophan and nitrite-cysteine systems, though the nitrite-BHA system did not show the activity. The DNA-damaging products were generally labile, i.e., the activity decreased significantly after 1.5 to 2 hours of the reaction, except in the case of the nitrite-BHA system. The DNA-damaging activity in the nitrite-BHA system did not decrease even after 48 hours of the reaction. Nitrosophenol derivatives themselves showed the DNA-damaging activity at pH 1. The active product in the nitrite-BHA system was isolated and the structure was determined to be 2-tert-butyl-quinone. This compound gave a positive rec-assay test, and showed no mutagenesis by Ames' method. The active product from the nitrite-cysteine system was infered to be nitrosocysteine, and the product showed both DNA-damaging and mutagenic activity.

A case of Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia with Ig E M-component was presented. A 76-year-old Japanese woman had a history of the operation for mammary carcinoma. Although neither lymphadenopathy nor hepatosplenomegaly was present, the immunohaematological findings typical for Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia were observed in this patient. Coexistence of the Ig M and Ig E M-components was recognized in the patient's serum protein. Positive reaction for FITC-conjugated anti-epsilon or rhodamine-conjugated anti-mu was noted in proliferating lymphoplasmacytic cells of the patient's bone marrow, but these reactions were not simultaneously observed in a single cell. The finding suggests that two separate populations of M-component-producing cells were present.

Autoxidized LA is classified into four groups, LA, LAHPO, SP and FP. Lysozyme is inactivated by these products in the increasing order as follows: FP less than LA less than LAHPO less than SP. The effects of these products on the amino acid composition of lysozyme is examined. All kinds of amino acid residues were not damaged until lysozyme was incubated with LA and LAHPO at 45 degrees C for 100 days. The susceptible amino acid residues attacked by the autoxidized products are tryptophan, lysine and histidine. The specific loss of methionine by SP occurs during acid-hydrolysis. The effect of SP was the strongest among the autoxidized products. FP was almost noneffective. The destructive actions of BP, MA and PA were compared with those of autoxidized products. Effects of these compounds did not resemble those of autoxidized products. It was concluded that tryptophan, lysine and histidine residues were specifically attacked by SP.
